Now that I have got my new machine I am trying to get some new use out of it with this software but I am not having a lot of joy. Is anyone familiar with this product ?
I can get my chosen wmv file to preview and add the chapter stops etc. However, when I go to disc burn it completes the validating step with an orange progress bar which fills up then disappears. Then it says, 'encoding preview'. Two new progress bars appear 'overall progress' and 'curent task/ encoding movie' .
But that's it. Nothing else happens. Ever. Both progress task bars stays at 0% until I ctrl/alt/del and end the program which is shown as not responding.
The thing is, I had a cut down version of Roxio on my PC when I bought it and I used this yesterday and it was fine. The wmv files are just downloaded subscription stuff (which I paid for and is legit) and as I say I have burnt them to discs on my machine fine.
The machine is Dell 2mb, 500gig, 940 dual core intel with whatever optical drive it is they fit.
I got Creator 9 as I wanted the editing functions but as you can see it is not ahappy experience so far.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I tried the online support question and answers and got nowhere except really frustrated.
You have been able to burn the files to a CD or DVD but when you try to convert and burn the wmv files to DVD video it doesn't work?
What I can think of: 1) The wmv file is the cause 2) Did you uninstalled the lite version of Roxio before you installed Roxio 9? 2) Were there any patches for Roxio? 3) Have you tried poking around [invalid URL removed]Roxio support? 4) Are there any firmware updates for your CD/DVD Drive? 5) There may be some sort of software conflict.
If all software and hardware is new then you should have access to support. See if you are able to burn another wmv file to see if it can work at all.
Just to clarify, the full burning process on the lite program completed all necessary conversions and produced a disc that played fine in a stand alone player.
Re your questions :
2) The old program had not been removed. However, I have tried your suggestion and removed it but it makes no difference.
2) Not sure about patches. I assumed when I registered it that it would connect me up and download any necessary updates ?
3) I tried the support area Q&A's and the 'webticket' thingit (but that didn't produce any sort of on line response). So far my experience on dedicated 'Techy' forums seem to be full of people who love to join in with each other and jump all over you because you're not an expert. Or rather, an expert in computin'.
4) Not sure what optical drive it is, and hence how to look for firmware updates (tho' as I say it worked fine yesterday with the lite edition). I'm sure finding out should be obvious but I've rooted around in my computer and it ain't jumping out at me.
You might want to uninstall both programs, reboot, then reinstall roxio 9. Kind of a pain and not guaranteed to work but that may be what you need to do. I don't know if other media programs (musicmatch, any other burner software) are interfering with what you have either. Telling you to uninstall everything may be bad advice.
Then within Roxio there should be a way to check for updates. It may be an icon in the start menu or it may be hidden within program menus (like in Firefox it's within the Help menu)
I doubt Dell's tech support will help you with this unless it is a hardware specific error. Roxio's phone support may not be free and their knowledgebase looks terrible. I would try their forums for more trustworthy help if it is frequented by company support staff .
I'm thinking the problem is either the wmv file (corrupt, unsupported codec, copy protection), roxio or the media
I'm only saying to stick with the Roxio forum because this appears to be potentially complex and I don't feel comfortable helping out. I would rather sit down in front of the computer and tackle it in person.
Well, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it to no avail.
The thing about the file itself being corrupt and not supported etc is that I have burned the very same file to disc with success just two days ago with the free Roxio that came with the PC. Plus I have tried a number of different ones.
However, there is no point in one asking for advice if one is not prepared to take some of it so I have made an effort on a teccy forum but I'm not hopeful.
Your best here is to visit these two websites, as they are dedicated to this particular type of problem ...

I've disliked Roxio ever since encountering it about 10 years ago. If I get a computer in the workshop that has it installed, I remove it and install Nero and Nero Vision Express.
Roxio finally fubard my machine, but sensing danger ahead I bought and got up and running an external hard drive the night before.
I cannot see why Roxio has been such a disaster on a nearly new machine which has not been cluttered up with loads of crap. There must be some basic and resolvable reason no doubt, but well beyond my wherewithal.
Nero has produced a dvd straight out of the box. It is not very nice to look at and the controls so far seem to be confusing, if not perverse. I have yet to find how to save the ISO file before burning whuich seems to me to be essential to save time on re-burns but I reckon it must be there somewhere. Still, an old Ford that starts first time is a lot more use if you've got a journey to make than Rolls without an engine in it.
I'll let you know how I get on with my refund. One complete reinstall later, and I have got a lot of frustration to vent on the first person at the store that says no...
