It really doesn't matter what camera you buy since there are so many great ones made now. For the last couple of years a number of companies have been shooting in HD (mostly HDV) to have content for the impending consumer switch to HD TV's. If you are forward thinking then you should do the same. Tony's suggestion of the Anima camera was a sly joke. That is a very expensive movie film camera meant to get into small places. For HDV you have a growing number of suitable options. I heard (not completely up on it yet) that there is a brand new format, similar to HDV (I think they're still calling it that, but the format has differences from the original) that is better. I would highly suggest Canon's line and I know that they have new models with the newer format. Panasonic makes a killer camera - the HVX-200 - but it is very pricey when you get all the storage bells and whistles. But any camera that is small and with 3-CCD's will be workable (for POV, choose the ones that have a flip out LCD and top handle).

Lighting is also pretty standard and wide open to many options. The industry choice are florescent fixtures that are color-balanced to the other lighting available. The most pricey but sweetest rigs are made by a company called Kino-Flo. But most other company's have similar banks of lights. (Do you understand the concept of color-balance?)

There are many many many more things to considers before getting wet (hmmm). If you have a ton of cash and the midas touch, you should get a hold of an honest straight industry vet like me, to counsel you on the way. They all may laugh, but if your dream is overpowering and your disposable income huge, you can do anything.

However, for anyone to offer you feedback into your proposed return profit scenario...there are just plain too many variables to determine first. Distribution is the big nut to crack...some self-starters just ply their craft over the net, starting paysites and purely self-distribute. But even that world requires mastery of the tools needed to make it. Good luck.

For a videocam, I thought the Canon XL2 was good enough (though only 1080i), but there are lots of of others that are 1080p now. Videocams and lights can be rented by the day, but past a week or so, it's probably not worth it:

Maybe when you said hot light, you meant hard light. In porn, the preferred choice is soft light, so that there are as few shadows as possible. Gonzo dudes love a big natural sources (read windows) and supplement with a few Kino's. They will sometimes even blast the soft light into the ceiling to try and soften the source more. Hard light is from a strong direct light source...sometimes even the light has a lens to focus the light even more (fresnel). This creates shadows which adds mood but sucks when your talent moves an inch and puts the goods in the dark. Either color-balanced type lamp will offer hard or soft, depending what smutz (diffusion) you put in front of it or (white card) bounce it off of.... Sure are lottsa' smutz's around here. Not you Comet Man.

Also, be aware that there are occasional STD (sexually transmitted diseases) outbreaks that coarse through the entire industry and no matter how many times you shower, you're fucked. Some do not go away, although there are series of shots available to protect yourself (Hepatitis and HPV). You sure you want to go through with this...?

this month it is exactly 10 years that I started porn and I never regretted my decision. Go for it!!!

RichB's advices were very precise. Although I wouldn't use a HDV camera for POV. I have one but I use my old Sony VX2000 for POV. 16:9 is not a POV friendly format and the cameras are heavy.
