Just a follow-up:
I received a note from this merchant on 1/25 saying that he has instructed his site administrator to adjust the sales tax rate to 7.25% for California customers. I don't think this change has been made yet, since as of today, the checkout page still shows 8.25%. However, enclosed with the note was a check for the amount of sales tax I was overcharged.
A new snafu: I've been added to the vendor's e-mail list and seem to get weekly e-mail newsletters with the subject of "XXX DVD Club..." to let me know of new specials. There doesn't appear to be a way to opt out of these mailings.
