As someone from the outside looking in it seems that in recent years the amount of male talent in the industry has decreased. I could be wrong but it seems like roughly the same 30-40 guys are almost exclusively in every scene. This is a lot different than it was 10-15 years ago when there was a lot larger pool of male performers.
In those days it seems like there were 3 groups of industry talent.
Group 1: core talent, the pros. essentially the same group that is performing today. The Johnny castle's and Manuel Ferrara's who were in scenes almost every week.
Group 2: guys who weren't quite pros but performed a decent amount of scenes. Maybe 1-2 a month. These guys were very hit or miss and sometimes would visibly struggle to get hard or finish the scene. However, the girls they worked with seemed to still treat them like pros. Also doubt porn was something they did as a primary source of income because they appeared pretty sporadically.
Group 3: The random talent. Guys who would appear in a scene or 2 and then never be seen again. They would appear on gimmicky sites like fuck team 5, can he score, cumshot surprise etc. These guys often seemed like deer in the headlights and understandably weren't very good performers. You could tell the girls doing the scene were dismissive and didn't treat them like pros.
So my question to anyone in the industry or who has an idea is why have groups 2&3 disappeared? Is it because the standards of the women in the industry have changed and they only will work with top notch professionals now? Maybe production companies have decided it's not worth the risk of having an unproven guy be a dud in a scene? Or is it just that the rise of the social media world we live in has deterred guys from "dipping a toe" in industry waters? Thanks in advance for any replies!
Thanks for the suggestion, definitely some interesting insights. My question would still be what was different about the economics of the industry in 2005-2010 that they were taking chances on a lot of the lesser known guys. Seems like it wouldn't be rocket science to figure out you get the most bang for your buck out of the top tier professionals.
If you watch scenes from some of the sites these type of guys were featured on it's pretty clear they were out of their element. A lot of the time on ft5, chs, and dorm invasion the talent was out of shape, not well endowed or confident. That was part of the "amateur guy fucks hot pornstar" orientation of these sites. They were marketed as the thrill of an average joe getting in on the action so I think it was more a matter of those guys not having the ability to stay in the industry rather than any plan of their own.
^^ I would say the economics of the porn industry were more favourable back then as internet pornography between 2005-2010 wasn't as mature as it is today, nor was high-speed internet as prevalent.
It's no secret that performers and producers lament how porn isn't quite as lucrative because of the loss of income due to illegal file sharing and it's not just porn viewers participating but also industry players who have enabled it for their own benefit e.g. MindGeek through Pornhub.
If revenues and profitability are hurt badly by piracy, it stands to reason that a studio would be risk-averse with new and unproven male talent where budgets are tight and reshoots would be expensive if not impossible because of commitments of the parties involved.
Even within your group 1, there's a lot of them who have completely dropped off the last few years who weren't even that old. Guys who were everywhere from 2005-2015 like Rocco Reed, Sascha, Anthony Rosano, Vince Vouyer, Mikey Butgers, Kris Slater, Alec Knight, Dick Delaware, Tony T., Will Powers, Alan Stafford, Alex Gonz. Being an in-demand performer burns you out. Michael Stefano recently came back after a 10 year hiatus and said he was completely gassed after performing at that level for so long.
Then you have guys in that group who suddenly died (Jordan Ash, Bill Bailey, Billy Glide), got injured (Mark Ashley), went to jail (Jack Venice), or got HIV and banished from the industry (TJ Cummings).
I personally knew a guy in your group 3. He was in a FT5 episode and later in a Toyota commercial. He never had any intention of pursuing a career in porn and was able to appear for Bangbros because they posted an ad (in those days) on Craigslist for amateur performers when that genre was popular. He later got invited to do a bukakke scene.
It's the directors who have the biggest say on which male talent gets casted in a scene. New girls have no idea who an A-list or no-name guy is, and usually won't mind as long as they are tested. Seasoned directors are buddies with seasoned pros and they almost always exclusively work within the same club. Newer directors and smaller studios may branch out a bit more and try out newer talent for cheap. But seasoned directors given a big budget to work on an expensive shoot aren't taking any chances with an unproven talent.
Nowadays with OnlyFans and Pornhub, girls can just pick their own guys they know in real life who aren't industry pros and that cuts into the competition from the legacy studios.
I've always thought one of the main reasons that group 3 existed in that time frame is that with the exception of a select few, there were very few women who were treated as "stars". Most girls back then truly were average people, hair dressers, bank tellers, etc. who moonlighted as pornstars. Today with social media as a way to expand their profile a lot of female performers have attained a level of main stream recognition that wasn't possible back then. Couple that with the economic recession and lack of alternative sites like only fans and you had many women looking to sell sex for some extra cash and the only way to get it was through internet porn sites.
Even some of the better known girls at the time did some of these more skeevy sites that included things like amateur males, fake cum, and having sex with prosthetic dicks. Kortney Kane did can he score and cumshot surprise, Alanah Rae did ft5, even Jessica Lynn who was very popular for a while did multiple ft5 shoots. I think the bottom fell out on these type of sites when girls standards started to rise. Jessica Lynn for example made a point of saying she was never doing ft5 again after it was discovered the talent she shot with had tested positive for hiv and another had lied to her about his age and race.
It seems like all of this stuff would be totally out of bounds for performers today. Definitely interesting to see how much the industry has changed over the years.
The Buggles "Video killed The radio Star" seems appropriate here except you change video for internet and radio star for porn performers. As much as the internet as a been a boom for porn fans. I don't know if the same can be said for the porn industry as a whole. Now don't get me wrong. There are still plenty of opportunities to make money and in many ways very different ones from just a decade ago but all the studios that were killed by piracy are sources of income that no longer exist and these were the ones that hired the talent.
These days you only have a handful of studios that still hire male talent while most of the others have their own in-house performers or they are themselves performer/producers and that's bound to cause a shortage of opportunities for male talent.
^ But wasn't it actually the porn industry itself that was one of the main drivers of advancements in the internet. And those advancements then extended to free file sharing and uploading that then severely impacted the industry. Not blaming the porn industry - unlike newspapers, who for some stupid reason decided to put all their content online for free - they really had no choice; just looking at the full picture.
^The only time the porn industry had a major effect on technology was when the makers of VHS players accepted to release porn on their medium while their Betamax counterpart did not. Porn may be very important to us but mainstream content is by far the biggest catalyst for internet improvements.
"As one senior industry figure put it: 'For years it has been a dirty secret that one of the key drivers of new consumer technology is sex, pornography. The need to make 3G technology work - and work fast - is exposing that secret.'"
"Technology is demand-driven. Cutting-edge firms develop products they think will sell fast. Some of the strongest demand comes from porn 'manufacturers' because each hi-tech leap forward helps them get over the one big problem their industry faces - the shame factor.
'Demand for porn is high, but it doesn't travel well,' ... 'People want porn, but they want it in the comfort of their own home, not seedy backstreet cinemas or sex-shops, and they don't want anyone else to know about it. Technology helps bring it straight to you. "
How was that guy's experience on ft5? Was the scene as unstructured and did the women he worked with treat him as dismissively as they seem to do on camera or was that more of an act?
This was back in 2009, but from what I remembered, it was positive and the girls in that scene were pretty chill. I think Alexis Breeze was one of them. Bangbros didn't expect too much of the inexperienced talent because they had stand-by guys in case if things didn't work out. Gave them some cheesy dialogue to remember and was warned not to creampie any of the girls. Got paid $500 for a day long shoot.
That article is nearly 20 years old and is 5 years before the first iphone was released. The concept of portable porn at that time was likely a portable computer that could play dvd's. The type of cellphone back then were not called smartphones because they weren't. The screen would not have made it possible to watch porn even if it could.
Porn fans are tiny when compared to mainstream tv/movies and gamers and therefore any technology developed is going to be geared toward the far more lucrative portion of the market. In this case porn inherits from the technological advancement geared toward mainstream entertainment and not the other way around.
There are only two times I know technology was driven by porn. The already mentioned VHS thing, and in the early days of the internet support for payment processors. Online shopping was unknown to most people, and paying on the internet wasn't viable, except for the paid-for content on various porn sites, where you had the first instances of "online shopping".
But now mainstream has taken over in all these fields: everyone now shops online, and many payment processors have big issues with porn (Paypal = big nono, and the current Mastercard/Visa boycott, along with the already year-long block of "obscene" content by them), which puts porn sites on a more difficult level than your normal online store.
Video streaming (or online video) is now on a totally different level. Sure, you have your content delivery networks, but again, Netflix, Youtube etc. are on a totally different level, and are driving the evolution of the technology. I haven't heard of any new technology in that field that was developed because of porn.

^It's not videogames that are driving the VR goggles renaissance...
As to why Group 3 would have vanished: because porn seems to have gotten more frugal and risk averse. Big productions like FT5, canhescore, inthevip, dancingbear, foursome etc where you have to rent multiple locations, take the weather into account, hire backup dicks(in the case of amateur males), shoot for hours on end and heavily edit/censor a good chunk of your footage would be far more expensive than just having 3-4 people in a room for an hour and a half for a vanilla scene. And I'm guessing that in the end the audience sadly just didn't appreciate it enough to justify the cost. Pearls before swine.
^ You think VR is now here to stay? Just as 3D movies in theaters. EVERYONE loves these. So much that almost no 3D TV sets are anymore available, and 3D blu-ray (and UHD) are also very scarse... It will probably not go away completely, though.
Yeah a bit of a shame porn has become so simplistic and lost a lot of its niche sites. Guess that's what the consumers want now though. Personally I consider the late 2000's early 2010's as the peak of the industry from a consumer standpoint.
"Porn drives tech" is a myth, mainstream has always done tech bigger and better. The reason you see small amount of guys is because one company owns many sites and hire the same guys. If you want to see different guys you must check amateur porn.
That's funny that they had to warn them not to creampie the girls, would've assumed they'd just scrap the scene instead of having standby guys who could've been recognized from other scenes. Would've ruined the whole premise of amateur guys getting action.

I believe that size matters when it comes to tricking your reptilian brain into believing that a depiction of a naked woman on a screen/page/cave wall means you're about to mate. Looking at a woman's ass on a little smartphone screen with the sound off in the family bathrom is nowhere near as arousing as seeing it life-sized on a 65 inch screen with her moans blaring (even moreso larger than life on a theater screen), but few people can afford to watch porn like that. If the google cardboard/sony psvr/facebook pornspyquest etc do enable you to have that life-sized porn experience at a much lower cost/hassle and much more discreetly that can be a huge benefit to most porn consumers improving any kind of porn-viewing for them, not just the head-pitching VR variety, likely making it far more successful with porn than games.
3D movies were already tried and failed, the benefits were not worth the hassle then and are not worth the hassle now. When 3D movies came back it was as a marketing gimmick in order to justify selling new HD TVs to people who already owned perfectly fine HD TVs (same reason they wanted to get rid of plasmas, they were so good people weren't replacing them unless they broke down).
VR videogames was already tried and failed, it's not even a matter of technology despite what its snake oil salesmen claim: most game genres simply do not benefit nor are even bearable in VR (it's mostly simulations and other slow paced first person games that can benefit) and the drawbacks and requirements are still huge (to maintain a framerate that allows at least half the population to not puke their brains out the graphics have to look like decades old games). Look at the pornhub stats of people watching smut through their consoles. I can see people getting a PSVR for the games like you'd get a playboy for the articles, sure you might read'em but if not for the centerfold you wouldn't have bought it.
I have it on good authority that the majority of 'straight' woman watch porn for the girls rather than the guys. I think woman are also more monogamy inclined so the seeing the same cock over and over isn't a deal breaker.
Recently checked out bangbros site for the first time in a while and noticed they've renewed the fuck team 5 website. Based on some of the trailers seems like they've merged the dorm room invasion setting of a crowd kind of standing around making cheesy comments during the scene with the ft5 premise. Not exactly the same but none the less good to see
