I have a cheapo Radio Shaft pencil iron and I hardly ever solder anything so I just improvise when I need it. [Link]

I have a lot of my old game systems in pristine condition, original boxes and everything. If you saw them you'd think they were new and never used. But I used to do a lot of prototype PCB assembly. Another helpful feature is a temperature setting. That way you can set the temp slightly above the melting point of the solder you are using. [Link]
