I want to start a porn review site, very very specific to the niche of porn I like.
Like a detailed scene breakdown for aficionados with my taste.
The reason is to help my niche lovers find the porn they like.
It's also to encourage more porn of this type.

Do I need permission from the producers of the scenes I'm reviewing?
What could be involved with something like this?

Think you're free to go ahead, you shouldn't need permission.

Only possible reasons I can think of is if you're looking for free site memberships or free DVDs.

However should that happen you might feel obligated to give more positive feedback instead of being completely objective and honest.

I'm not saying to be a jerk and call out bad scenes when you see them and be as harsh as possible; there should still be some human element and be mindful of feelings (a bad scene isn't always because of a specific performer), but if you're basically going to be giving paid reviews then you wouldn't be all that different from other reviewers who call themselves professional; the same people who vote on awards and often get the winners wrong in hindsight.

I don't know what type of specific content you like but if you want to stand out from other sites here's my suggestion for improvement.

Be as thorough as possible for video and audio specs.

Most reviewers ignore this because they either don't care, don't bother to check or don't know how.

If you're reviewing a physical DVD, you can check the properties in your video player.

You will get a little pop-up window showing you the codec (e.g. MPEG-2), aspect ratio (e.g. 16:9), audio type (e.g. Dolby Digital 2.0 at 192kbps)

If it's one of the rare titles released on Blu-ray even more so. Is it a MPEG-4 AVC or VC-1 codec? LPCM audio (lossless) or Dolby Digital (lossy)

Is the disc region free or region locked? (Most porn discs are region free but should never assume)

Also if the disc is actually functional. Seems like a weird question but it's 2022 and some companies surprisingly still don't know how to create a decent DVD without video glitches (corrupted frames or banding), usually due to bad compression of dumping too many scenes onto a single disc.

If you're just streaming stuff but there are download options potential subscribers would want to know the same details.

Are the bitrates of terrible quality in the 3000 kbps range or in the higher quality range of 10000 kbps for 1080p scenes.

Same with 4K (2160p) downloads.

Is there a daily download limit? Can you leave comments on the videos? How often are new scenes released if you're reviewing a specific site?

Also remember to have some fun writing your reviews. If you know you're going to dislike something prior to reviewing it, why fight with yourself?

I don't know if you have specific goals but don't expect overnight success. If your opinions eventually get industry attention, it might be slow and over a long period of time.

Forgot 1 last thing.

If you're writing reviews on your own website, do your research and confirm they're comfortable hosting adult content. Even if you're not linking photos, gifs and trailers/video clip samples some more prudish hosting companies might have issues with certain language and topics.

Last thing you want is thinking everything is ok and then one day all your stuff is randomly purged.

Also a good idea to backup everything you make. Would suck to have to re-write something all over again.

I wish you luck but I can't help but feel that this is more a fantasy than a possibility. Here is a small list of things to consider.

1-You first need a lot of capital to buy a domain name, server equipment to handle the internet traffic, and let's not forget the cost of membership to the websites and/or dvd you want to review.

2-You will need to dedicate a significant amount of your life to do the above and it will still take you months if not years to accumulate enough info to make it worthwhile visiting your site.

3-To do the the above likely means that you will have to quit your job and also do very little socializing or the time I mentioned in part 2 will grow exponentially.

4-If your reviews are very niche in nature than you may quickly see that few people care about your reviews thereby making your investment a waste of money.

Last but not least.

If you want to review dvd's then take a look at ADT's various reviewers to see how they do and reach out to them to see what their experience has been.

If you plan to review porn sites then take a look at TBP/The Best Porn (see below link) because their reviews are some of the best you will ever see and they are for the most part quite honest.
https://www.thebestporn.com/home.html

I recommend that if you visit TBP then also visit their sister site PU/Porn user because that is a site for people like us who post their reviews of porn sites. I have done it multiple times and have enjoyed the feed back i got from other reviewers and visitors.
