| ntmlgst Member 21 Posts 4/10 | I'm 46 and I don't think I'm ugly but I've never been on a date. How do I meet women? I'm usually at the coffee bar playing computer chess or reading and I see other poeple with friends and dates and I have no idea of how people get together like that. [Link] |

If ya really want to get your danky stanky, find a community theatre group in your town and volunteer to help them build sets or hang lights or such like.... You'll meet all kinds of women waiting to hump you blue In short, get out there and interact with people. |

Do you have problems finding people with common interests, like chess? Do you think that you have something of interest to say in a conversation? Are you a good listener? Do you have problems picking up social signals of approval, from others, directed at you? Or, do you pick up on those signals, but are too shy to act on them? I wonder if you aren't putting too much pressure on yourself. Stop looking for dates. Look for people to make friends with and whose presence you enjoy being with and ask them to join you for lunch/dinner or even a game of chess. Edited by - Clam Digger on 4/14/2010 2:01:54 AM |

| 36YOvirgin New Member 2 Posts 1/10 | I've got friends, even opposite sex friends, but never have understood how one finds a sexual and/or romantic partner. Been rejected by all the women I asked. Have tried dating sites and just as clueless there. I'm somewhat autistic (Asperger's), so that may be part of it. Sometimes imagine losing it to a pornstar, but that's probably not the best way! |
| TorontoJohn Member 12 Posts 2/08 | Step 1) Clean up good. Wash up, dress nice and get yourself feeling confident. Confidence is KEY. Step 2) Do social activities and network. Join a class, a team or just hang out where you would simply enjoy interacting with people. You have to seem approachable yourself. Doesn't mean you need to be an outgoing extrovert to do it. But you have to be able to strike up and maintain a fun, or interesting conversation. Have fun and take the pressure off yourself to meet someone. Use dating sites, talk to friends and see what's out there that you like. Step 3) Natural friendly conversation. There is nothing worse that forced, awkward and uncomfortable dialogue. Its the easiest way to put someone off that you've just met. Again, enjoy yourself and present yourself in an open, easy going way. Don't expect or hope something is going to happen right then and there. Unlike porn it takes TIME to get into a woman's panties. These early conversations are passive interviews for both of you. Get to know her. Ask A LOT of questions and listen to what she says. Dont babble on too much about yourself at the beginning. Remember, you want to get to know her right? You are interviewing her in a way too. Figuring out if you want to be with her. Step 4) Courting. If you like someone, AND you get the feeling they may like you too, then dont hesitate. Sack up and ask them out. Dealing with rejection is something you have to be prepared for. We've all be shot down at one time or another. Its not the end of the world. There are millions of women out there to meet. Show interest, but dont put too much pressure on the gal or on yourself. Its all about having fun and getting to know someone first. Step 5) Fuck. Eventually the time will come when both of you will want to take it to the next level. One more time: have fun and be safe. |

There are numerous social groups on Meetup which allows you to get together and interact IN PERSON (again in a non-dating way) with other people with similar interests in your area. Personally, I'm a member of several hiking groups. Every hike I go on, there are many women that show up that I talk to and get know. Some of them were even drop dead gorgeous, like the Brazilian girl who looks a swimsuit model (yeah!). Didn't get a date or anything, but at least I got to interact with her and many others to some degree. Edited by - ilst on 5/30/2010 9:25:18 AM |

She may not take you up on it, but she'll be flattered. Well, unless you're creepy about it. You aren't creepy, are you? Good. Otherwise, you should start with finding a woman you share an interest with, so go somewhere appropriate. For example, apparently you like to read, so go to bookstores. Talk to people there about books: "Oh, do you like mysteries? I love a good mystery! I've been reading Tony Hillerman's stuff. Do you know him?" |

| Bobcat Senior Member 1490 Posts 2/08 | 1. Make your profile interesting and include lots of photo's of yourself doing interesting things. Make your interests girl friendly, include things girls want to do! Remember to say how warm, friendly and caring you are too! 2. Be realistic about the type of girl/women you can attract, look for a female version of yourself! The really hot chicks get hundreds of emails and probably never read most of them. If you are 40, slightly overweight and average looking, that's the sort of women to concentrate on, not an 18 year old glamour model!! 3. Email as many local people (taking into account point 2)as you can, even if you don't like them that much (they may be much better in person). |
| rexthedestroyer Member 16 Posts 10/08 | Everyones suggestions are nice, but I would advise the OP and the 36 year old virgin to contact a mental health professional. It sounds like you have some kind of anxiety disorder that has prevented you from connecting with people. All the internet suggestions in the world will not get you over the hump. I suggest that you contact a cognitive behavioral therapist to help you walk through the process of learning to interacting with people. Good luck. |
| Dingdong Member 22 Posts 6/10 | Some time back I used to hang out with such an aforementioned creature. One day we went into a park. He saw a girl he liked. He went and spoke to her. Something along the lines of You know, you are really beautiful aren't you. I seem to remember somewhat an animated usage of the eyebrows on his part whilst he was saying this About four hours later they were shagging each other senseless. |

If babes are the ultimate prize (and they are) the law of competitive balance states that those more disadavantaged in the sexual attraction game will find ways to compensate elsewhere. |

| Breeze Member One Smokin Hot Chic 532 Posts 11/08 | I totally agree with Bobcat, "If you are 40, slightly overweight and average looking, that's the sort of women to concentrate on, not an 18 year old glamour model!!" But I am in the 40ish age bracket and women are no problem for me. Dating for me looking for girls between 35 and 45 is like picking candy. I disagree with Kimi when she says..."You need to write to ALL the women." To a point. I have my dating requirements down to a science, which makes me a player, but I am really not. Actually girls think they can play me, good luck. And that is what I don't get. When two people go into a relationship with the same ideals and one person starts changing shit, wtf? I'm getting a bit off topic here. I also totally agree with New Romancer, join a club, become involved in something that interests you other than a porn forum. But don't do it to find a girl, do it for yourself. |

| lindi Senior Member 12345 3205 Posts 9/02 | My husband used to play online, and he loved it, but his emotional responses to online chess were not good. When he played his computer, he set the level and tried for a level where he would win 1/3 of the time, which offers the best learning experience. And he was always satisfied with the game. When he played people in person (and he is an affable, easygoing person; other people like him), he loved the game. He is, by the way, a gracious winner and a gracious loser, always says, and means, "good game." He appreciates the people and the game. I have a brother who also likes people, but when he wins at chess he jumps up on the table and struts around crowing and rubbing your nose in it, and when he loses he sulks. But, anyhow, when my husband played online, real people, he was frustrated and mad all the time. From the next room I'd hear him cussing. Other players frequently quit just before they were going to lose (just disappeared without conceding, leaving him just waiting for them to make the next move), or they were rude in a lot of other ways. He joined the USCF and played their site, which got rid of most of that bad behavior (since people have to pay an annual fee, they don't want to get kicked out and then try to join again under a different name). But without the personal contact, he just never could view them in a positive way as people. He absorbed the losses in a different way, losing to people that he couldn't see. And he couldn't view them impersonally, as computers. Somehow he got the worst of both worlds, and over many months he tried to tweak the way he saw things, but still remained frustrated with it. I kept pointing out that although he was addicted to it, he was not enjoying it. He eventually broke the online addiction and now plays actual people. He was fine, by the way, playing people he actually knows online. He sees them as people. Anyway, my point here is that computer chess and online chess and chess in person are different things. I recommend joining a group and getting outside of your self more. Of course, you don't have to. But this is a choice you are making in your life, to do solitary things that don't allow you to interact with other people. In a cafe, reading a book or being busy on the computer is an effective way of shutting out contact with other people. I wish I could say that if you put the book away, someone would approach and talk to you, but that's not really going to happen, as people have started living in a bluetooth bubble. As far as approaching other people, the only reasonable way for a very introverted person to do that is to join groups, because then they sort of have to talk to you, and you are reasonably expected to talk to them. People always recommend churches, but I don't, unless you like churches. Their advantage is that they sort of have something to sell you, plus they have to uphold a friendly reputation, so people do come right up to you, at least a little, and they always have a shitload of other committees and things, if you want to bake pies or work with the youth choir or do prayer breakfasts, yadda yadda. But if you are not religious, forget it. Also, church people sort of want you to be outgoing as well. Chess players understand introverted guys. You never answer any questions about what you like to do that is fun for someone to do with you. I don't know the size of your city, but (amazingly) in my town there are groups for Star Trek, Star Wars, the coming 2012 calamity(?), model railroaders, who knows what-all. Our tourist info center here has a three or four page list of groups, some of them filling very funky little niches. I suspect that as you read people's suggestions, you are telling yourself all the reasons why you do not want to do any of that. I suspect that you do not actually like people, are not interested in them (but you want them to be interested in you), and do not want to be bothered to have any obligations to other people. If you think that they will come up to you out of the blue and start a relationship, you are wrong. You are not entitled to that. Or can you tell me that when you see someone sitting alone, you approach them out of the blue in a friendly and welcoming (and non-creepy) way and invite them for a drink and a game of chess? On none of these threads of yours have you responded to any suggestions for examining your own life and improving it. People who DO talk to other people socially are trying to tell you how it's done. Do you hear any of it? |
