A friend finally hooked my PC up with audio after my not having it for a long time. But something strange is going on. If I put a burned disc in my PC, windows media player will open and play any track fine. But if I put an original store bought factory cd in, windows cd player opens and plays the cd, but I can't hear ANYTHING, the cd plays but I get no sound. I have quicktime, real player and windows media player which all play fine for video and audio on the net and burned discs. But when I put a factory made original cd in,windows cd player opens and plays the cd, but I can't hear a damn thing, no audio. What's going on?  [Link] |

| jamesn Senior Member Cambridge, MA 750 Posts 1/04 | Posted - Jun 12 2004 : 12:51AM it doesn't sound likely, but for the future, set the options on wmp to make sure it doesn't use any kind of copy protection on your legally bought music to prevent you from listening to it if you switch boxes or crash. winamp2 was a great call, subsequent versions got bloated after it was bought by aol and frenkel lost his programmers---if you don't care about pretty stuff nothing's got the decoding engine, dither and gain options, really simple interface as http://foobar2000.org/. it's about 1mb and can be as simple or as feature-laden as you want. check all of the settings under sound/audio devices to make sure it's playing through the card as default, then the advanced volume options to make sure the wave output isn't set too low, your speakers are in the right jacks, the pcm codec isn't missing, etc.
