Bob  All-Star Member 5516 Posts 3/03 |  Posted - Oct 19 2008 : 12:54PMOne of the internal the hard drives I use for back-up of my data drives "disappeared" from Windows Explorer yesterday. I opened up my computer case to check the power and drive-cable connections, and they were all fine. I checked the BIOS and it showed that the drive was connected. I went into Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> Administrative Tools --> Disk Management and was informed that the drive had to be initialized and formatted. Since the drive had been in use the previous day, this seemed extremely odd. Given that my original data was intact on my primary data disk, I went ahead and reformatted the backup drive. Then I did diagnostics on the backup drive, and they came out fine. Of course, diagnostics aren't foolproof. Is there any likely explanation for this snafu other than a defective backup drive? If not, it's RMA time. Any thoughts? [Link] |

You could've probably tried running 'fixmbr' on the drive from Recovery Console to see if it would fix the problem (without losing data). There are also some programs that can rebuild the partition table, and the ones that can back-up entire MBR in case this happens again. Then again, it can be just a defective drive.  [Link] |
