| the-end Member 35 Posts 2/12 | I'm doing a presentation about surrealism in porn films at school next fall, so I'd be glad to get some recommendations for that. So far I've come up with these movies: Bacchanale Blue Movie Café Flesh Devil in Miss Jones Part II (I don't own part 1 yet) Devil's Ecstasy Driller F Heavenly Desire Little Girls Blue Mary! Mary! Pandora's Mirror Satyr Squalor Motel Take Off The Passions of Carol Through the Looking Glass Visions of Clair Some of them will contain the highlights of the presentation, such as Little Girls Blue and Through the Looking Glass, and for some of them I've had to stretch the concept of surrealism a little to have them fit to this project. Some of the movies have only one or two short scenes that has something that could be interpreted as surreal. I'm planning on ordering lots of DVDs this summer and would really appreciate any recommendations. What would be the titles you'd think needs to be included in the presentation? [Link] |

Here are more, taking the [loose] criteria you set up into account: COMING ATTRACTIONS DARK DREAMS DEVIL IN MISS JONES 3/4 FIREWORKS WOMAN FORBIDDEN UNDER CENSORSHIP OF THE KING HIGH RISE (debatable) THE LAST BATH NEW WAVE HOOKERS OVERNIGHT SENSATION RAMAGE SKINTIGHT SNAKE EYES For SOV most of Greg Dark's video productions would fit, as would a handful of Michael Ninn features from the early to mid 90's (they mix film and video). I also just watched a video from the 90's directed by Rob Black called THE CELLAR. It's a pretty ridiculous Dark homage/parody. Stephen Sayadian's 90's era videos definitely count, even though they don't come close to CAFE FLESH. Then there are films like RESURRECTION OF EVE, which clearly employ avant garde techniques but aren't 'surreal,' per se. By the way, I hope you have the restored DVD of PASSIONS OF CAROL, not the awful old tape sourced thing. If you don't, it's a worthy acquisition as we scanned in in 2K and Shaun Costello gave his very first audio commentary ever. |

| the-end Member 35 Posts 2/12 | By the way, Zazel was famous in Finland for being the only porn film to be legally released during the video censorship years in 1987-2001. I'm a bit ashamed that I haven't seen that yet, though.I'vee seen the movie (both Henry and June, and Un chien andalou) but I don't remember much of it. As far as I recall there weren't any pornographic scenes in the film, so I'm not quite sure what you mean. (I'm not counting softcore scenes here)I'm purchasing all the movies for the presentation via Adult DVD Marketplace, as I haven't got much money and that is the best place for me to go if I want to get a bunch of movies at a fairly reasonable price (I'll have to get some student loan for these anyways) so I might not be able to get some of the more obscure art titles. Thanks for recommending them anyway! I'm blurring that line myself too, so I'm interested to check out some "experimental" stuff too even if they can't be directly be labeled as surreal. Memories Within Miss Aggie is on my "wishlist" on ADM. I've tried to collect all even remotely interesting titles there. Behind the Green Door is something I've been wanting to check out for a long time but never got to buy it because something more interesting and obscure has always come into my radar. I guess I feel it's so much of a classic that every vintage/retro porn lover "must see", so it basically makes me feel I'm too forced to watch it and that makes me want to view other a bit more unknown films. Deep Throat was such a disappointment, and I've found that most of the more enjoyable movies have been those that I haven't known anything about before. But perhaps Behind the Green Door is different. I'm certainly interested in it more because of the possible surreal angle on it.Oh, that was supposed to be on my list but I forgot to type it.I've got New Wave Hookers but for some reason I found it quite dull and didn't even watch it through. Perhaps I'll check it out again to see if it has some interesting scenes to show. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right zone for it at that moment. It was perhaps a bit too "wacky" for what I was wanting to watch. I think I've got Coming Attractions in my wishlist on ADM. I have to check out the rest of them. What comes to Michaels Ninn and Zen, I think only one movie from both of them would be enough. The style is so distinct and the same in all(?) of their movies so basically just one movie is enough to show what it's all about. What would you recommend from both of them? Would Falconhead be better for my presentation than Blue Movie or Satyr (both of which are already a bit stretched for being examples of surrealism when compared to some of the other movies I have, but as I have to go with what I own, I have to use all I've got)? I love Sayadian's Dr. Caligari but as that's not a "real" porn film, I think I can't use it. But perhaps I'll check out some of his other works. No, I've got the shitty version. For some reason I like how it looks though. There's this weird "layer" that gives a weird atmosphere to the film. At least it hasn't got an awful audio track like the version of AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FLEA I have has. It was totally unlistenable. The audio commentary is certainly making me want to check that restored version out too. Thanks for all the recommendations, TOMB, GGG and John! I appreciate it very much! |

| T0MBOne Senior Member 1200 Posts 5/08 | I love the wacky scene at the end of HOT COOKIES (it reminded me of inanimate things seeming so alive in The Beast's world of Cocteau's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) but the rest of it, like you say, is a bit lacking. Back to boxes and bags---tb |

| the-end Member 35 Posts 2/12 | They all must be found from the same seller. Otherwise I can't afford to buy the amount of movies I'm planning to (unless I, of course, buy them at another time).Seems it can't be ordered internationally. That's sometimes disappointing when I find out only after logging in that the movie I just checked and wanted isn't available to overseas. This is in my buying list already :) I was quite excited when I first heard about it as I love the idea of paintings coming alive, but my excitement was lowered a bit when I got to see some images and read some reviews of it. I had really hoped that it could've been something remarkable. That is still something I must buy though. Edited by - Airola on 6/5/2012 7:01:24 PM |

| the-end Member 35 Posts 2/12 | I got carried away a bit as I ended up buying other movies than surrealism based too. There just were too many interesting movies I felt I have to get now as some of their prices were too tempting for me. Here's what I got: Angel on Fire Babyface (this release has probably the least good picture quality but it seems to be the only one that's uncut. I had to get it while I still was able to get it in low price) Café Flesh (I already have this but it's for a friend of mine) Debbie Does Dallas II (I already have 1 & 3 so I thought I must get this one too to complete the franchise now as I might never get it that cheap again) Devil in Miss Jones 3 & 4 Dracula Exotica Fleshdance Hot Cookies House of Dreams Irresistible (I love time travel movies!) Let Me Count the Ways Little Girls Blue (for a friend) Memories Within Miss Aggie Ms. Magnificent Night Dreams (again, for a friend) Pink Ladies Sensations (for a friend, but I want to see this one too) Ultra Flesh Virgin and the Lover (it's something about a lonely man having a mannequin that comes alive) I was about to buy other movies but discovered these TVX releases that were just simply too interesting and affordable that I had to change my buying strategy completely. There were several titles I wanted to buy but I ended up getting some cheaper stuff just to get as much DVDs as possible for the amount of money I was able to use. As Yngwie Malmsteen once said: "People say less is more. How can that possibly be? More is more!" :) Edited by - Airola on 6/10/2012 7:45:26 PM |
