This weekend I will be taking the forum offline for a full day to switch to a new version of software we purchased last month.

The forum will og offline sometime early Saturday morning (2/25) and should be available late that night or early the next morning. It takes about 10 hours for the conversion program to process all of the data and put it into the new database.

Good luck. Hope the installation goes relatively glitch free.

I hope this goes smoothly for you as well. You've had enough problems recently.

I liked the old software better!

I hate it!

What was wrong with the old system?

I can't make it _______________(fill in the blank) .

How do you ________________(fill in the blank) ?

Where is the ______________(fill in the blank) ?

It won't ________________(fill in the blank) .

It looks weird!

It loads slow!

This sucks!

Well, when you do, just send them right on over to this thread. I'm calling neeched

Holy XXXX! You're moving the old threads over to the new system?!?
Best of luck, Drew. Fingers crossed at this end. Touch wood. (Uh, that's nice.)

Have you had Luna over to work some spells?

@willywilly:

If it makes extensive use of style sheets, it may well load much faster. At least for the poor, deprived dial-up users.
The current system has quite a bit of overhead. This very page is already over 30k. If you're stuck on 33600 baud, that's nearly 10 seconds. And that's not even including the graphics.

Yes, the conversion program is already written. I will be sending moderators a link where they can preview the new software within the next day or two.

No. The two features are not related.

I think the down time will be minimal. Only a couple of hours instead of a full day.

This'll be weird. Will we be able to change colors and stuff like that? I focus on the important stuff.

Very cool. I hope everything goes well. After the last week, you deserve a turn of good luck.

Will it be like a new look & feel then or is like patching?

It's a whole different software package. I just don't have the time to keep adding features to our mostly home-built software so we went out and bought an off-the-shelf package.

You'll have to wait and see.

Using an off the shelf package is a bit of a double edged sword. The development is done by someone else saving me time and effort but when they create exploitable bugs it's much more of a problem. It's not like I think I'll be able to hide what software we're using I just don't want its signature to be present on every page.

After all there are only so many .NET forums out there worth anything.

The new stuff isn't a radical departure from the current color scheme. It's easier on the eyes IMO (Steph's too) but I'm sure we'll get tons of complaints about every little thing anyway. Such is life.

I've spent all day on the style sheets. The colors are a muted version of our current colors without the heavy contrasts (eg no dark blue in the middle, no alternating yellow and white posts.)

I will get to work on the thing most important to so many of you... smilies.

I just want to say how much I will miss each and every one of you ADT'ers during this lonely down town.

Okay. I'm lying. I won't even be online this weekend.

The new forum is unfortunately a bit slower and has larger pages than our current stuff. On the plus side it has tons of new features.

We're almost ready to make the switch.

If you think about it, the old stuff was ushered-in in an era of probably 50% or more dialup-users. That number has to be down, considerably. If you look at the bulk of pages out there, they're much "heavier" than a few years ago. I wouldn't sweat it, anyone on dialup's got the option to lighten the load through checking for new versions once per-session, disabling cached images, etc. Certainly par for the course on the rest of the web.

I was a little worried about the muted colors and no alternating colors for posts, but I gotta say that it is much easier on the eyes. Good job.
Yeah, as long as there's cool smiley's we'd be happy if it alternated in chartreuse and fuscia.

Sure, but I may need to move the hosting of the forum outside because the increased page sizes could max us out.

Is the new version like the trial balloon that went up yesterday for a little while? I posted a comment to that effect on WNAN but the system crashed and the afternoon posts went missing.

You can see the new software here

we're still holding off on going live with it until a few minor issues are corrected.

To Drew Black,

Could this change affect anyone's logging in? I ask because I just had to re-register because when I put in my username and password, it didn't let me in. I think I have been to the site since this change, but I am not sure.

Anyway, I know I had the info right, so I don't know why it blocked me. When I clicked on the change password link in the reminder email, I got a page where you are supposed to put info in to reset it. However, there was no box next to the "*Username" part. So, I had to register again. And, when I re-registered I tried using the username I had before and it said that it already existed. So, apparently the account is still open but maybe the password has been changed.

It shouldn't be related, but a site I belong to recently changed my username and password because someone hacked into her site. She said she emailed me that it changed, but I either missed it or didn't get it. Now, I have been locked out of that site for over 2 weeks because the site says my info is incorrect. CCBill said the info works when they put it in, but not for me.

Long story long, these two cases shouldn't be related but the details are similar enough that I thought I would ask. Thanks for your attention.

We didn't change the software. It didn't work out. However we did change everyone's passwords. You would have received an email to that effect.

BTW, it generally helps to mention what your old username was. if you want us to look into the problem any further. Otherwise I have no way to connect your new forum ID with the old one.

It's not a dead issue yet. I'm waiting for the new version to get released and we'll see what happens.
