After watching another average to good porn movie last night, I was thinking of how much I get sick of the bad, tepid, listless porno scenes that unfortunately strike even the best movies. I don't know how many times I have rented a DVD to basically watch only 1, 2, or 3 scenes out of the usual 5 scenes in a movie. I started thinking about ways to get around this... I thought it would be totally badass if you could contact a porn company, and perhaps pick and choose 5-6 scenes from movies they have in their archives, and put them together into a UBER HOT PORN DVD! Say you liked only the Cytherea scene in a recent movie, you could pair it with an Ann Marie scene from an earlier movie, and really get the ideal movie for you. Obviously, an operation like this would probably not be that cheap. I figure that many people would be willing to pay extra to get a DVD that is perfect for them from top to bottom.

What does anyone think about this? I think many consumers would love such an idea, and many studios would groan... Hopefully we can get thoughts from both sides.

Well I for one dont think it is a good idea at all. All it is is a custom compilation, it isnt tailor made porn. I like watching a given movie, because of the stars in it and the style of a director or cameraman, or the style of sex thats in it.

I mean I can see some limited appeal, for fans of someone or some studio or director that doesnt have a comp or something like that.

It would be just old recycled porn, not anything new, or any new talent, It just doesnt sound like much of anything that is that interesting to me, but maybe some people would love it, and good for them. I dont see too many studios if any that would even consider doing something like this in massive amounts.

I would however be very interested in being able to contact a studio and picking who performs in what kind of scenes for a new picture, but that wouldnt a possibility.

Well for me personally it would be a godsend, because I would have an excellent DVD with scenes I enjoy from top to bottom. It wouldn't affect my normal purchasing habits, it would just be a way for me to cut out the dry, boring scenes that plague many releases. I hope that studios will begin to see the wisdom in this approach, and give it some serious thought.

I think for a studio to make a master and then produce a one-off copy the cost would be prohibitive.

It would be cool if you could just go to a companie's website and buy the scenes that you wanted to have on your DVD, and the companie would burn them for you and ship it out to you.

See DenverDon's comment above about mastering the compiled scenes. The typical production run would be 1,000 pieces.
So the company would have to hope like hell that *your* custom compilation would appeal to a broader audience.
So, they'd have to promote it.

All of a sudden, you don't have a custom video. You have the prototype for a commercial release.

Scott and Denver,

I think the you're both missing the point. The point of a custom-made DVD is that it's customized to your individual preferences - not mass-produced.

It's obvious that the music industry is managing this issue poorly right now. Let's face facts, porn has always been on the leading edge of technology and I think they're a lot smarter than the RIAA and the way they're taking on the CD buying public.

Considering how many rips (of video and music) are out there on Kazaa and the rate that old tv series are being released on dvd, it's just a matter of time before they realize the profit potential of customization. In fact, they already are with video on demand through the internet.

People are slowly customizing CDs and it's just a matter of time before they start customizing DVDs on a massive scale. The potential for this also seems more tailored to porn than mainstream movies since the buyers are interested in certain segments only rather than an entire feature.

It's just a matter of time before technology becomes feasible. I, for one, hopes it's soon.

traderhtc,

Understand what you are saying but the DVD is a slightly diffferent animal.

With music, it's easier because you can skip tunes, and the player looks for the next 'blank' spot and knows it's at the beginning of a tune.

However with DVDs one of the bennies that we have become used to is chapter stops so we can jump around to access what we want. Chapter stops (or jumps) have to be programmed in during the mastering portion. So a master has to be made (and programmed). That is going to be much more labor intensive and will add to the expense (not to mention time and trouble). As Scott pointed out they would expect a run of about 1000 copies so for a customized DVD it would be a hope and a prayer that others would want the exact same buildup of scenes.

With that kind of effort the cost would go up dramatically and I don't think the potential buyer would want to pay it.

I can just see that if this was not done then the comments would come back "this DVD is crap, you have to play it through from start to finish like a VHS tape". The only alternative would be to FF through it like we do on VHS.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed but what if we downloaded individual scenes from the companies and then burned them onto a DVD ourselves? I could then make that all Ashley Blue or Amee Donovan compilation I've always wanted.

There can be a sweatshop of DVD Authoring Slaves that would custom compile the demanded scenes

That sounds like a pirate operation.

Chapters are actually individual files on the DVD. If every scene were a full chapter, something like this actually could be done at some type of a kiosk.

The source DVD's would be in some type of mega changer. People would be able to select a scene and it would be copied to a hard drive or directly to a target DVD (probably the former) and given a name representing title 1, chapter 1. This process would continue until the consumer purchased enough scenes to fill the DVD or he/she didn't want any more scenes. If the data had initally copied to a hard drive, it would then be copied to the DVD.

Although, technically, this would work, given current technology, it would take too long for this to be practical.

Also, I assume that there is currently some complicated royalty structure and data reporting when this type of process is done for CD's. The fact that it is being done with large corporations probably makes this feasible. I would think that coming up with viable royalty and royalty structure between "Mom & Pop" video stores and adult video companies is probably unlikely.
