Really an article on John Waters new classic porn series on Playboy TV but nice to see something fairly lighthearted on porn in Canada's major newspaper.
The article touches on an argument by Samuel Delany in his great book Times Square Red Times Square Blue that the porn theatres in NYC were a place where people of different class backgrounds and sexualities mixed.
This is echoed in this engagingly light article on the L'Amour porn theatre in Montreal.

3rd street, downtown Louisville. These days, the entire block has changed from what it looked like back in the late 70's. On a recent visit, I've tried to locate the buildings there, yet, they're all gone.
With a seating capacity of several hundred people, the old theater was huge on the North side of the street. Plush, velvet seats with plenty of leg room.
I'm about to watch my first ever porn film, among a small crowd of "rain - coaters". I'm eighteen years old. The same age as Desiree Cousteau performing in the title, "Pretty Peaches"
Tame fare, compared to modern productions, until the enema scene flashed on the big screen before me. Shock & awe.
Those old brick & mortar establishments were easy targets for the likes of Mayor Rudy of N.Y.C., when he got rid of them in Times Square.
They remain easy targets today. One by one they're going away. Even the outdoor drive-in ones.
It was quite the experience back then. The sounds, the music, the scent of semen in the air. Everyone sitting with their jackets across their laps.
One could spend the entire day there, watching the movie repeat over and over. You could sleep if you wanted or dared.
A homeless shelter for perverts.

Thanks for the story dogzcatcher. Pretty Peaches is a major classic and was recently put out by VS on a beatiful looking blu ray.
Funny that you remember it being tame, today I think the film would be very controversial as so much of the humour is built around Cousteau being repeatedly raped.

^ Yep, plus the enema.
I'm headed out to Los Angeles and San Francisco in June. I was thinking about visiting some of the remaining theaters, but I must admit I'm a bit nervous about the prospect. I imagine they're pretty skeevy. Has anyone been to them recently? Is it worth going? I'm thinking I should at least visit the O'Farrell.

The O'Farrell is still a porn theatre? When I was in San Fran years ago the old red light strip was pretty gentrified, some of the old signage was preserved though.

Some fascinating posts by CummingLinguist on his experiences back in the golden age at Times Square, in here why is live sex show so taboo?, and maybe bringing that back to life ourselves..

Was also just talking about the awesome Vanessa del Rio porn theater scene in Afternoon Delights (1981) were she starts in sunglasses watching guys jerking off to the porn on the big screen before taking 3-4 of them on.
Always been a fan of dogging videos, and though never participated in anything like this, seeing a girl in the theater would get me a strokin, and a group of us getting to stroke around and cum on her, maybe not even cum on her just jerk it like in Curse of the Catwoman (1991), I'd be down.
And as have always offered for any scene needing some perv to jerk off and cum on command all I need is a sandwich and I'm there :)

^ Inside Annie Sprinkle was one of my favorite movies when I saw it in a theater. I loved the scene where she drops in on a theater while it's showing one of her films, and she proceeds to fuck her perverted fans.
I don't remember the scene in "Curse of the Catwoman", but it may have been inspired by what was going on in the pervier strip clubs in those days.
I never witnessed anything like the bukake fantasy you discussed. (It's funny, I don't remember seeing other guys cum. I remember that it was common for guys to jerk off. I'm guessing that I saw so many guys cum at one point on another that none of the incidents stayed in my memory. Still I think I would remember if a guy came on a stripper.)
One time, I was at a S&M club which allowed in single guys.
Madonna shot this photo there, so imagine a scene like this, but with a big soft chair, and a bunch of guys jerking off to the action.
Madonna_sex.jpg
I was watching a couple, and told a girl, "You have amazing tits."
She smiled, and– taking note of my hard cock– asked, "Do you want to cum on them?"
This was all the invitation I needed, and I started to pump harder until I dropped a load of sticky jizz all over her sweet softies.
After zipping my pants up I proceeded to the bar, where I engaged in small talk with a stranger. A while later, we spotted each other, smiled, and didn't say a word.

Crazy story, is that really Madonna, the pop singer, in that pic?
BTW Inside Annie Sprinkle got a very nice release on DVD. Well worth seeking out.

^ Yes, it is Madonna, the pop singer.
She did a book called "Sex" in the 80s that included a lot of erotic photos. She shot some of them at a club called The Vault, where the incident I discussed also took place.

Awesome post man, and one of my fav posts here, you have seen and experienced things I would give so much to experience! There is a Blade Runner reference in there somewhere lol
I just love the dogging as usually they get to come on her tits too, not to keen on bukkake, but a group of guys getting to cum on her tits would be awesome!
And you got to do just that!! Watching an unknown girl working another guy and then with just a few words getting to cum on her amazing tits, in a porn theater! Fark man!!
I always though Madonna had surprisingly perfect tits after seeing this pic from her "Sex" book..
madonna sex book.jpg
and your pic confirms it, but only saw a couple of the pics, I thing I had an idea but never knew she was going to S&M clubs and doing stuff like that..
Man I wish so much they would Bring Back Porn Theatres

I loved that post.
My favorite hangout was the Show Follies Center. It was owned by the same people who owned the larger and more famous Show World. Sometimes headliners would dance at Show World, then walk a few blocks to the smaller venue. The same couples performed live sex shows at both venues.
As a smaller venue, each patron would get more up-close time with the performers, the dancers were never more than 10 away from any fan, and the clientele were more seasoned perverts. If a typical Show World crowd might contain 30 guys, 3 or 4 of whom were engaged in "front row action", a typical Show Follies crowd might contain ten guys, 3 or 4 of whom were engaged in "front row action".
In some other posts, I talked about how I once fucked a stripper, and how a couple once got off the stage and fucked in the chair right next to me. Both of these incidents happened at Show Follies. The smaller setting also allowed more personal interaction in other ways. Trinity Loren once asked me to take out my cock and jerk off, in part so her boyfriend could see. If any boyfriends were ever in the audience at Show World, I never knew it. The strippers were more likely to recognize particular fans: The one stripper who fucked me didn't do so the first time we set eyes on each other.
I suspect it's simulated.

I wish I knew the O'Farrell was still there when I visited I would have loved to check it out. Will do next time I'm there.
That site has a great little section on the history of the O'Farrell and the Mitchell Brothers and their films. Sounds like they also kept Crumb's artwork on the walls!
Cool to know that July 28th is Marilyn Chambers day in San Fran, funny when you think of the harrassment Feinstein put her and the Brothers through.

Newark though? Man, that city's a blast from the past. I live less than 10 miles away and just can't imagine going to that theater. It'd be like stepping back into the Bowery in the 1970s, only minus CBGBs (where, in the 1980s I spent lots and lots of time…not bragging…oddly it was pretty boring… as one would expect! just adding context for the above…).

The financial viability of the porn theatres came up in the VCR is Dead thread.
You often read about near-empty theatres, are these from the late 70s early 80s when videotape started to make itself felt? By the mid to late 80s HIV and crack were the final nails in the coffin.
If the theatres were so empty how did the films turn so much profit?
I know some believe the industry profits were just money laundering for the mob but I think Eric Schlosser in Reefer Madness makes a convincing case that the mob's involvement in porn tended to be more about them skimming profits from producers like Reuben Sturman rather than money laundering.
In his book on drive-ins in the US Kerry Segrave notes that a number of midwest and southern drive-ins turned to soft and hardcore porn to remain profitable in the 70s. One drive-in is said to have quadrupled attendance by playing porn films.
Can anyone here who attended or worked at a theatre recall and/or compare the audience sizes from the early 70s to the late 70s or early 80s?
Pieps worked at a theatre in Tucson in 78' and it was near dead.

^ I can't speak about the early 70s, but Times Square was still very active until Giuliani and "Broken Windows Policing".

^ Yeah, that was the impression I got from Delany's book on the theatres at that time. But how was it outside of the 'major centres' like NYC and LA?
