In 80s, we had Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon. Then came the 90s where Jenna Jameson emerged, and soon after Tera Patrick...it seems like right now there is no "Jenna Jameson" type of popular mainstream girl in porn. There is a couple of contenders for the title with Stormy Daniels and Ashlynn Brooke the favorites. The question is: who do you think is the biggest porn star right now? I think it's Stormy.
I think there was a possibility that Teagan Presley could have been the next big thing, she was featured in non-porn related lads mags in Britian. But the whole Digital Playground contract thing scuppered things for her really. I think Sasha Grey is really the next big thing, although she's still got a long way to go to break into the public consciousness. The question is when she's exposed to all this new fame and the mainstream media will she stay true to her roots. Nothing says romance like anal sex.
I agree with Stormy and Jenna, however I don't even think that Jesse Jane is in the top 10. Do you think Jenna's popularity also has something to do with the similarity in name with Jenna Jameson ? I'm not saying that's the only reason why but it might have something to do with it.
I guess I specifically mentioned Jesse because she's with a pretty big company and also travels a lot. She seems to get out there with the people (around the world) maybe a little more than most.
There don't seem to be as many "pop icons of porn" in this era, it's true. Nobody on the level of Tera, let alone a Jenna Jameson. Nobody that you'd read is dating someone famous outside of porn, or appearing on Larry King, or gossiped about on the cover of trashy checkout-aisle-tabloids. The thing is, first the girl has to reach top-tier in the porn industry by her physical and sexual aspects, and then she has to have the pop culture personality to make guys want to watch her talk on TV (even if they're wondering the whole time what she looks like naked). Then it takes some time to leverage her porn reputation into pop culture awareness. Sasha is on her way though, if she's smart how she handles her career, I think she's got the personality for it. The irony though is I think pop culture expects any woman emerging from porn to have huge tits. Jenna Haze is a maybe... she's got immense porn talent, but I'm not sure if it can cross-over to pop culture.
Id say to keep an eye on Jayden Jaymes. But I think its technology driven. Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon were queens of the VHS to me. When DVD's came about, the list changed as then with the rise of the internet. Who ever rides the next tech innovation will be seen as the next big thing IMO...
Going by earlier trackrecord I would say Aurora Snow or Teagan they come to mind as really solid performers for a long time. The mainstream answer is probably Jenna Haze. She seem to be very popular outthere and I can agree to certain level but not all the way through.
I couldn't agree more. The Next Girl will probably come out of internet obscurity and never appear on a DVD. I don't think Blu-Ray will ever catch on as porn distribution... gonzo looks like shit in HD, and feature porn is a joke these days. I can't see the claims for Jenna Haze, I was into porn and didn't know who she was until I came to this forum. She is popular but is only really known by name by raincoaters. Sasha Grey seems the obvious answer here, she has been in Rolling Stone, done American Apparel ads and starred in a indie film directed by a prestigious American director. Not at the level of Jenna Jameson but I also get the feeling from the coverage she's received that Sasha is much more respected by the media than Jenna ever was. She doesn't look and talk like their idea of a porn star, that's what intrigues them.
I think Alexis is a great performer but I not an "industry leader". She seems to do what she likes and sees no reason to prove anything anymore. I started a thread a while ago asking if Alexis is the new Naomi... meaning we are all mesmerized by there incredible asses. But Naomi seemed to be over in about a year. Alexis has done very well but is not outspoken, driven or seems to want to be anything other than what she is. And good for her!
I just don't see her out there promoting herself as a "superstar". She does her scenes, she is in demand but not for discussion panels as an industry insider. Jesse Jane appeared in the MSNBC show about the porn world. That kind of exposure is what it takes to become a "leader" or "superstar". Maybe I am thinking differently then you on this topic. I am thinking of someone who represents the industry both in porn and the mainstream media. I cant say there is anyone who really does that right now. So I may be reading the topic heading wrong. But my first post was what i was trying to say. Ginger Lynn and Christy Canyon didnt set out to be, as I said "Queens of VHS". Things just happened that way. They worked hard, and we all got to see porn on our TV's for the first time. A convergence of circumstance.
Nimrod - Regarding Jesse Jane, I'm not a gigantic fan of hers and as you say don't find her particularly attractive compared to other girls but she has starred in one of the biggest porn films Pirates which had a huge budget and they even did an 18 version of it I believe. If we're talking about mainstream and popularity she is pretty well known, she has dabbled with rockstars and celebrities, been on the cover of albums, magazines and quite a few people outside of porn know who she is. She does pretty high quality work with Digital Playground mostly in HD, i'm not saying her flicks are quality, some of them are wishy-washy as fuck but hey she has made a name for herself. Christy Canyon and Ginger Lynn queens of VHS well I'd say Jesse Jane would be a contender for queen of DVD and Blu Ray at the moment.

I have a fairly good, if anecdotal, reason that I believe the answer to this perplex is Ms. Grey. Once in June, and then again in July, my mother mentioned that she wanted to see the Girlfriend Experience…which featured "this porn performer, Sasha Grey." I don't quite get what the question is because the answers are all over the place. Is this asking who is the biggest pornstar that has the biggest mainstream presense? Is this asking who's the biggest pornstar wihin the porn community? Is this asking who's the biggest pornstar in terms of performance? In terms of mainstream crossover of girls working now I think it's easily Sasha Grey at this moment although I think more people know Mary Carey and Tera Patrick overall. Contract girls tend to usually crossover (but not always). Contract girls tend to be among the prettiest, "safe" (as in they don't do the extreme stuff that turn a lot of people off), and have the money and power of a big company backing them with PR. If we just look at the world of Porn I'd say Alexis Texas, Sasha Grey, Gianna or Lisa Ann. None of these girls have had much mainstream exposure but it the world of porn they're the ones fans get excited over, move product and get boxcovers. Sometimes others might be hot for awhile but these three have lasted a bit. I'd give the edge to Sasha, Gianna and Lisa Ann because they do IR. Because Alexis hasn't done IR yet there's a segment of the porn fanbase she doesn't have. To qualify for this honor I think a girl has to be able to star in and do multiple genres of porn..ie: Bubble Butt, IR, Big Tit, Anal, threesomes, etc.. Best performer is tough to call because it's a preference thing. Lots of girls are doing great scenes these days. @Nimrod: why are you pressing this "IR hurts a girl's career" thing? It's become generally accepted these days (2008, 2009) that this is a myth. Or at least, if it was true once, it's just a myth today. Looking at the biggest stars in the biz today, the vast majority of them have done IR, and it really doesn't seem to have hurt them. It all depends on who's judging and what their rules are. With me, I say the more types of porn you do gives you the biggest overall fanbase. For example, I keep seeing Stormy Daniels name pop up on threads like this but I don't think I've ever seen a Stormy scene. She's a contract girl that can only be seen through one company. I'm not a big fan of WICKED stuff, don't generally care about watching features, and I'm only a fan of a few contract girls. That's not to say WICKED or Stormy don't do great stuff (Both have lenty of awards), it's just stuff I'm not into. So I have to imagine that there are others like me that haven't seen a stormy scene for the same reasons. It seems many people on this site are into and mostly watch certain types of porn. If you're into big butt porn, you've likely seen all 3 girls. If you like IR you've likely seen all 3. If you big tits you've likely seen 2. If you like features you've likely seen all 3. If you're into anal, you've probably seen plenty of 2 of them (Gianna's on her way). If you like hardcore agressive porn you've likely seen all 3. If Lisa, Sasha and Gianna showed up at any club to dance or any store to do a signing most of the cutomers would be familiar with their work. A contract girl may have name recognition but I'd bet no where nearly the diverse fanbase. That's how I base "popularity".
