The point is the same as it always is, to talk about it. I respect Porn, Porn Stars, Directors, company owners and the industry in general, but lets not sugar coat it.

so then we should just stop talking about things that have already been discussed. How then do we get other opinions or input from those who have yet voice new thoughts. How do we move forward, how do we learn new things about old topics? what would the world be like if we were to never talk about things that have already been talked about?

Let me think about this...so either add some shit to a big pile of old shit, or start my own pile of new shit...
Also my point isn't that porn is or isn't prostitution... we all already know the answer to that. My point was more to find out how people try to rationalize behavior. Like trying to act like your not a prostitute if you do porn because it's (place your reason here), and that's why I'm not a prostitute etc etc etc..

I respect prostitutes. I also know many of them are where they are because they have huge problems in life, and can only hope for them to sort themselves out. I see no contradiction in acknowledging the realities of it without debasing them for what they do. Porn is a lot better, though I'm sure it too leaves its fair share of wrecks. Comparisons beyond that are rather pointless as far as I'm concerned; categorising people is generally an exercise of prejudice.

As I mentioned on the "how much does it cost" thread, the biggest difference between an X Rated film of today and an X Rated film made 25+ years ago is today actors and actresses are paid by SEX SCENE, not given a day rate or a lump sum for being in the film.
Therefore, if someone is receiving money for the express purpose of having sex with someone else as opposed to getting money to be in a film during which they will have sex, there is no difference between being in porn movies and prostitution.
That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with it either way.

WOW..thanks John, I had no idea that was the way it used to be...That really does make a difference .I'm glad that you pasted..
as far as prejudice goes..who cares, once you get into porn you can expect to get labeled all kinds of fun names...sticks and stones etc etc

Porn is protected under the freedom of speech - the goal of porn is to present an art form.
Prostitution is not protected by any written law or common law.

The biggest obvious difference is that one act is legal and the other is not.

The biggest difference between performing in porn and prostitution is who is paying for it and why. With prostitution, the dude pays the girl for his own sexual pleasure. HE pays HER for sex. In porn, the male performer is not paying for the sex, he is in fact GETTING paid for it. The act of sex in porn is not about the male performer getting pleasure and getting off, it is about the viewer, it is the viewer that's paying for the sexual pleasure with porn.

With porn, the viewer pays the guys/girls for the viewer's own sexual pleasure. Admittedly, the payment is indirect, but there is a payment nontheless.

The question deals with how attitudes towards sexuality are changing in the western world.
One hundred years ago, the only mediums one could experience sex was either having it with another person, imagining it, reading about it, or looking at paintings of it. As movies are, clearly, a means of conveying 'speech', it's almost impossible to restrict pornography, without restricting free speech. If movies weren't protected constitutionally the same way the written word is, there probably wouldn't be a legal porn industry.
Attitudes towards prostitutes have changed over the past hundred years as well. As we focus more and more on individual privacy rights over enforcing social morals with laws, I think eventually prostitution (at least in some forms) will eventually become legal. Certainly, we don't view prostitutes with the same type of derision as even only fifty years ago. I think the more we start to see upper level prostitutes in the news, movies, and music, the more we'll start seeing public acceptance of them.
Something important to consider, though, is that the role of an adult actress and a prostitute is different. A prostitute is far more like a stripper, as their job is more to provide an enjoyable experience to the client, while an actress's job is to simply appear as though she's enjoying herself.

sigh why do people ask these dumb questions and why do so few people in this biz know the real answer?
OK Last time
I do not pay the performers for having sex I pay them for signing over the copyright they have on their performance, plain and simple.
that copyright is transferred to me via the model release, they dont sign it they dont get paid
they get paid after the fact when they do sign it
muddy it anyway you want but thats how it is and thats how the courts saw it in freeman v los angeles

That's just splitting hairs. Prohibition of prostitution is bullshit. There are probably a lot of things that aren't specifically protected by any law. But most people would recognize it as horseshit if the authorities went after them for other stuff. Like the laws against dildos in some places. What a crock.
If you buy a woman an expensive lobster dinner and take her home and fuck her brains out, it's a date. If you skip the formalities, it's a crime. Pfft!

LOL..Mike South spoken like a true pornographer..
"I do not pay the performers for having sex I pay them for signing over the copyright they have on their performance, plain and simple."
SHIT!!! I was always paying performers to have sex with each other, damn it I got it all wrong!!!
Also whats wrong with being a prostitute.. A porn girl has to be on set for 6 to 8 hours, get fucked bare back for an hour or so and walk out with a taxable $1000.00 check in the mail. A prostitute (or a porn chick who does "privates") goes to a hotel fucks some guy for 10 minutes and walks out with a few grand cash so who's the fool?

The problem with porn these days is we have too many people in this biz with no real knowledge of the biz.

Knowledge, Dedication, and Perseverance is definitely key. It's all about working hard to play hard, and yes a lot of us love to play hard. Very hard. It's good to just set a year aside and stand on the side lines and know your pro's and con's and what your comfortable with and what the market is geared towards nowadays.
I know that most girls seem to do porn out of vengeance or some form of spite. I say do it because you're the nastiest whore that can exude sheer depraved sexuality. Balls to the walls, baby!
I guess I was a bit off topic there. Oops, I did it again!

many porn stars work as high $$$ pro's on the side....the porn celebrity carries a high market rate and the career is extended and even the COUGARS stay on the prowl..............so this answers the question

The difference is: I can pay a lot less to watch porn than I can to watch a prostitute. And I'd really just rather not be there, you know? The smells and all. And the awkwardness. "Hey, you guys mind if I jack off over here? I'll try and not get any on you." Apples. Oranges. Mmmm..a nice sorbet sounds good right about now.

yer welcome and when put that way it does make sense....at least to those who have sense. It's a basic concept in copyright law, people think you have to register a copyright or a trademark to enforce it but that isnt true...the copyright exists the minute the work is created and in the case of an adult video scene its a shared copyright.
The photographer owns the copyright on the image, the model owns the copyright on his/her likeness. The purpose of the model release is to transfer the ownership of that copyright from model to photographer (or photographer to model in the form of a photographers release.)
Now you know

Mike South is absolutely right. Payment does depend on whether or not the model release is signed...
Case in point, I shot a scene a while back (last May), the guy refused to sign the release = no pay for him AND I cannot do anything with the footage.
Here's my issue with this whole thing: I was casting for a feature a few months back (I put up some ads, looked at model agent stuff, etc) and one day I got a call from a girl who says that she's interested in being in a movie. She asks me what the film is and I explain that while it does have hardcore sex in it, it's a movie so her ability to act and read dialogue is more important than her ability to give head. She says that's fine and asks the pay. I explain that we pay day rates based on the size of the role. She then asks if she would get more for doing an anal scene. Again I explain that pay is based on the size of the role not the ability to perform certain sex acts.
She responds with, and I quote, "so a girl who does anal and squirting isn't gonna get anything extra?"
The point of all this: model releases, cameras, and lighting aside (as well as the fact that most prostitutes don't accept business checks), if I were to pay an actress more get fucked in the ass on camera than I would for her to suck a dick on camera, than I don't see how that differs from paying a prostitute presumably more to get fucked in the ass than suck a dick.
There are very few porn studios that I know of that don't adjust their actors salaries based on what they will and will not do on screen. Men and women who agree willing to do "kinkier" things will get more money to do them whether they're done on film or in the privacy of a john's home. At the end of the day, all that matters is how much bang has been gotten for your buck.
EDIT: The above is NOT to imply a lack of respect for anyone engaged in either profession. It's simply a statement of the somewhat obvious similarities in payment for the two.

Pornstars and prostitutes may be involved in the same type of physical activities but i see the difference in a similar vain to a professional boxer and a bar room brawler. You can make a case that there the same or there different i guess?

Bobcat,
I'd say that's about the long and short of it. They're similar activities, but clearly not identical. One is legal, the other isn't. Neither industry is particularly socially acceptable, but neither industry has a huge negative social impact.

Too many women give everything up for free to the Scummiest Of Guys. Sometimes 5 Or More At A Time....and on video......for free.
I'm certain that more than a few Ladies currently doing Sex Films decided that getting fucked for free by men they really don't like made no sense.

Well back to work for me, today I'm editing a 30 scene anal comp full of girls that aren't prostitutes because they aren't getting paid to take dick in the ass, they got paid to sign over the copy rights of the "performance"...

OK, there are plenty of girls in the porn industry who post but it always seems that no women in this industry will come out and post on this topic. So here goes...
Well, it's interesting that all of you guys "Know" what its like to be in the sex provider business. No matter what you say there is a certain judgemental tone in a few of your voices. After all, porn os still legal and those rest of us are doing something against the law so the implicit message is that we deserve less respect.
We enjoy the same diverse personalities as do porn stars. We have nutcases, druggies, you name it. We also have some very "normal" women. I for one never have had a substance abuse problem and have actually never taken any illegal drugs! There is a certain hierarchy within our profession starting with streetgirls (big issues!) up to independents and high end agency girls. We all have different reasons for getting into this profession and staying there if that's our choice. I "Worked" from the end of high school, through college (yes I graduated in four years) and on and off since. I learned early that to be appealing you have to develop within a niche and if you can do that you can prosper in this business. I have, and even several years later remain viable. Of course I also maintain a full time professional job.
Are we the same? Resounding no! There are similarities though. We both must be responsive to the consumer. The difference is that I am he writer, wardrobe, director, producer and marketing person. Oh, and I get only one "Take". Also I can't just complete one production and sell copies I actually have to successfully perform each and every time. You tell me which takes more talent? Are we like strippers as someone mentioned? Not even close. Again there is the mass market appeal and oh BTW strippers are doing something legal so we can not look down on them as much.
Why don't some of us do porn? Some do. I have some women with whom I work who have done some and no they have not been abused, threatened, assaulted exposed to drugs blah, blah, blah. Don't forget that if girls have problems going into porn they are not going to shed them once in the industry. Personally I'm now way too old but I also have an aversion to large scale exhibitionism. Sounds strange? Not really. I dress in a revealing, sexy and sometimes slutty manner but the lure of the forbidden or unrevealed is still there. Other girls may have other reasons.
