since toshiba just announced that it is giving up on HD DVD, is the industry now going to be putting out double titles now Blu Ray and regular DVD. Also what is going to happen to current productions bound for hd dvd will they be halted? Also will blu ray maybe just be a novelty that a few features will be put out on?

It's been slightly covered in this thread from last month where at least howie had the thought that "Porn will bypass the Blu-ray technology and focus more on VOD and streaming while keeping a foothold with standard DVD. The replication costs for Blu-ray will deter most porn studios from releasing in this format."
I'd share that thought - for porn and mainstream. Tech Talk has a couple of active threads - not so much from a porn standpoint but just the technology.

Many studios will be releasing Blu Ray titles this year. By christmas the price of Blu Ray players will be under $200 dollars and as that market grows so will the number of porn titles released.

Where there are buyers there is a market. Porn will definitely be distributed on Blu-ray. As it stands now Blu-ray will be the dominant (if not the *only*) physical distribution format for mainstream HD movies for years to come, adult industry and porn producers can not ignore that. Also, the price for getting a final product to the consumer will go down (producing/replication etc.), it is just a matter of time.

I just hope that the sheer size of a BD will be used for a quantity of quality.

This will sound like a dumb question but...Were all those porn DVDs that had a "Shot in HD" label on them really shot in HD? If they were how are they able to play on my regular DVD player? I thought real HD movies took a special player.
Don't laugh. I know very little about all this stuff other than all this new technology is seming to be pushed on me when I'm fairly content with what we have now.

Problem is that HDTV adoption rate is still pretty low (about 35% in the US). Although the analog signal cutoff is next year, I suspect most consumers would rather get the digital converters than spend $900+ for a decent HDTV. This is gonna curb the Blu-Ray adoption rate.
Also, people may want the flexibility of watching movies in different rooms. Sure I have an HDTV, but my bedroom TV is still the old CRT TV (I prefer watching porn in the bedroom anyway). Maybe I want to watch it on my computer? Standard DVD is still the best way to go.
Then there's the "too much detail aspect". Do we really want Dirt Pipe Milkshake in HD, shit-specks and all?
HD is great for movies with special effects, great scenery, etc. For everything else, maybe not so much.
The discs are way too pricey (~$40-$50). Sure it'll go down, but not that much anytime soon. Look how long it took for porn DVD's to take over.

Draxx-
If you do a search for "Shot in HD" for the last two years, you'll find some hits for sure.
Shot in HD or shot in HDV is simply the format it was videotaped in. Then it needs to be transferred to a computer and programmed onto a DVD. That step is where it's determined if the actual DVD is a High-Def DVD, or if the format is brought down to standard definition, which any player can play.

Yes it is. We never gave HD-DVD a serious consideration.
But Blu-Ray is CRAXY expensive to author and especially to make the replication masters. Until those prices come down, I don't think you'd see more than a couple of Blu-Ray titles from us in 2008.

From what I understand it's getting cheaper and cheaper. Hopefully we will see some hardcore anal releases in HD pretty soon.

It is very pricey, that's for sure but now is a great opportunity for premier name studios to fulfill a market need that didn't exist a year ago but one that will only get bigger despite everyone's claim that DVD is dead. Imagine a consumer searching online for Blu-ray porn and only finding the best brands and none of the glut that exists in the standard DVD market now.
Leisure Time will never release anything on Blu-Ray :)

Mike, I just wanted to say great job on the Bree HD-DVD! Money well spent. Will the Jenna Haze interactive be released on Blu-ray anytime soon? Also, is there any chance of getting Teagan for the next one? Her Digital Playground Virtual Sex was kinda meh imo. Thanks.

Mike, will this include lots of anal, A2M, gaping etc? I can't wait to see a HD release with these wonderful items.

I thought porn was always way ahead of mainstream, like with CD-roms, the internet, DVD's but now they're already way behind on blu-ray. But then again I will rather wait until the prices drop though.

I think that's extremely optimistic. The competition with HD DVD is what caused the price decrease of Blu-ray players over the past year. Without that competition, I think that he only low priced Blu-ray players are going to be the obsolete models when the new machines with the higher profile levels are released. You can get a pretty good price on profile 1.0 players now because profile 1.1 players are now hitting the market. But buying a profile 1.0 player now would be a bad idea. The same will go for buying a profile 1.1 player later this year when the final profile (2.0) players are released. On the other hand, the new profile players are going to be more expensive than current players are.

Porn has historically been ahead of mainstream, in areas geared toward making porn more accessible to more consumers. VHS eliminated the need to go to seedy movie theaters or hassle with temperamental film projectors. DVD addressed the videotape wearout problem and the FFD/RWD hassle and the inherent troubles of highly mechanical machines.
HD/Blu-ray/etc is more a mainstream thing, furthering the industry's idea of bringing the movie-theater experience into the home, by way of bigger screens, wider aspect ratio, sharper images and bigger sound. All those things are nice, but far from essential, and do nothing to make more porn more accessible to more consumers.
