With production being way down and many companies slipping into oblivion I thought it mighy be helpful to have a thread noting those self-same companies.
Some may be shells of their former selves, no longer releasing original content just comps of all scenes. I would consider these 'zombie' production companies who are for all pratical purposes dead.
JM Productions - Hasn't released an original video in years, just comp after comp.
Red Light/Diabolic - Once huge, not a fan of most of their material but they produced so much there are bound to be exceptions. How did they fall apart so quickly?
Vivid - Not a hundred percent on this one but when did they last release something? Their site is all about their strip clubs, radio and old celeb videos.
Elegant Angel - Once my favourite, they were reduced to comps and their best talent left to form HardX and ArchAngel. Now bought out by another company and restarting production, they may do good work but no one from the original company remains.
Sin City - Remember them?
Black Ice - Never the best but they featured many of my favourite black and latino performers. A niche no longer served very well imo.
Caballero - I'm listing them mainly because they have some classic-era features and most of Andrew Blake's best work in their catalogue.
VCA - In the 80s and even into the 90s VCA was huge. Lots of classic from the golden age and more modern porn in their catalogue.
Justin Slayer Productions/International - Made a go of it for a while after losing his Evil Angel deal but haven't seen anything in years.
Extreme - The saga of this once successful company is pretty well known I think. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than Rob Black.
Seymour Butts - Seems almost forgotten now but once was dominant. That terrible reality show was around the time when he started to decline in relevance. Seems to have released a few titles last year strangely enough, did anyone see them?
Am I correct on all these? Remember recyled comps don't count. Others to add?

I was wondering about Vivid. What happened? They seemed to be making a turn toward reality porn (swingers, sex tapes) and parodies, which was a smart business move. And then....nothing. Axel Braun left, and the parodies dried up. Are those swinger and groupie movies current?

I think the problem with Vivid was a severe miscalculation in their business model. When the market for physical media began to shrink, instead of adapting with a strong online service they tried fixing the problem with band aids, like making major changes to the type of content they were producing and selling. Reading some of the articles about Vivid from the late 2000's they seemed to be focused heavily on "celebrity" sex tapes. Relying on sex tapes always seemed like a weak plan, as it's something where you can have no real control over the release of fresh material. I can't recall any celebrity sex tapes from the last year or two that people got excited over. The last one the seemed to get any buzz was that MTV teen mom. In hindsight the problem may not have been with the type content Vivid had built their empire on but the outdated manner in which they were selling it.

Devils Films: They still add the odd movie but they are a mere shadow of a once great studio.
Private: They still release the odd new video but again a mere shadow of a great studio.
Extreme Associates: I know why they are gone but they once had a slew of release each year.
Hustler: Not sure about this one but I don't hear a lot of new stuff coming from them(if any).
Here are a few more: Harmony, Combat Zone and Adam & Eve.

Wondered about this, haven't kept up much with modern Europorn. Marc Dorcel, LP and Woodman are the only ones that seem to be producing. Woodman is down to a one man band model too.
Any other major producers left in Europe? Jacco?
Huster looks like they may have bought VCA's catalogue but they have no idea what to do with it. Too bad as there many classic era gems in their catalogue.

Harmony still release films, not as many as they used to. Other European studios still going:
21sextury
Explicit Empire
Nathan Blake
Mature nl
GGG (yeuch)
Eromaxx
The worst genre for repeat material is transsexuals. Leave aside Evil Angel (and even Jay Sin has gone) and Trans 500, and every damn film is a compilation.

I have about 400 porn studios in our system and only between 100-150 of those are active. I can't give the exact number, as we have a lot of classic studios that don't produce new titles but we still sell their old titles.

Flash, is VCX's catalogue now with Video X Pix? Who are now Distripix?
Not sure how that all works. Believe TVX was an illegit splinter from VCX releasing films they didn't really have the rights to. Considering the piss poor quality of their releases I could believe it.

Sadly, you are right. Even just looking at sites that cater to the pee fetish niche, which is a large niche but still a small slice of porn overall, there have been over 300 companies that have closed. I've put in countless hours to document the early days, and been able to either save or recover some or all content from each of these companies. The list is unwieldy, so I apologize for that. Also, sorry for the dates and times, I generated this list with a dir command.

While I'm sure many of those sites had some sort of pee fetish content at some point, it looks like only a handful of those were actually devoted to it and the vast majority simply had some content that happened to include peeing. That makes your argument about "just a small slice" rather disingenuous when your evidence is a much broader selection of sites.
And some of those sites are from stars who've been out of the business for years. Is it that big of a surprise that Taylor Rain's site isn't up any longer? (or that whoever was domain-squating since then didn't last?)
also, dir /b will get you the list without the times and dates for future reference.

Blue Coyote.
Roy Alexandre produced and directed content advertised as "non-violent", (vanilla).
How refreshing for me (and boring to many) to have non-violent content available.
"Natural Wonders of the World" was a long-running series.
Being a fan of Christina Jolie, (I love her smile) I was able to purchase several dvds direct from the company in California for less than $5.00 each.
Sadly, their web site is shut down (RoyaleBlueMedia.com) and their content is limited to other retailers.

I stand by what I said. I never said they were all pee sites, I said they catered to the niche, which is true.
Also, sites that feature pee content are a small slice of sites overall. I can tell you they account for less than 5% of sites and probably 1-2%.

I didn't say your list was inaccurate, I said it was disingenuous which it is.
You include domains like suzerandall.com, yet Suze Randall's site suze.net is still operational. So either the domain just changed names or someone squatting on the suzerandall.com site went under. If it was someone squatting it was almost certainly not anyone who was producing content. That holds true for many sites on your list.
Many of the sites you were focused on an individual, and as such have a finite life expectancy. They're going to go away regardless of the state of the industry because the whole focus of the site is no longer in the business. Very rarely you'll see a site like Danni's Hard Drive or Club Sandy that successfully shifts focus away from an individual to produce broader content, but those are the rare exceptions.
Then there's all of the sites you included on there that are basically illegal in all but a tiny handful of countries. Many of them couldn't process credit cards for payments (since Visa and MC are such prudes) which left them to survive on revenue generated by people subscribing via 900 numbers and direct withdrawal. Oh and many of those weren't producing original content either. Just reposting the same ol stuff.
So while your list may technically be accurate as you've described it, it has little relevance in a discussion about porn production companies.

Well certainly Private is not like they were 20 years ago but due to the altered conditions, I can no way say that they are doing very bad. 2 decades ago they conditions were different, they were shooting mostly DVDs and spent a lot of money producing them, weather was exotic locations, fancy clothing or sophisticated media technology. Now, because of the internet and streaming booming, the adult industry is more scene-centric, but this doesn't mean they stop producing. They still produce new stuff with steady rhythm.
The French. Marc Dorcel had to adjust too but their quality standards, producing rate and philosophy didn't change at all. Colmax and JTC still produce but not like before. They are under the wings of Dorcel. A lot of semi-amateur initiation companies however have emerged.
The British adult cinema suffered a lot of loses. Harmony is still producing but they certainly dont do it with the same rhythm as before. The same with BlueBird and other companies like Relish. Now they are trying to be kept alive through Digital Playground and Brazzers (directional).
The Italians nearly vanished. ATV sub-function. The same with Salieri. Pinko tried to do a dynamic comeback but I think they didnt insist much.
The Germans. Goldlight bye bye. Mick Blue tried to give Magma a small boost but generally they dont make a lot of stuff. GGG/Thompson however still produce smut with girls from all around Europe.

Meanwhile... Explore Sexuality!

I wouldn't call it disingenuous. This thread is called "The Graveyard of Porn Production Companies," and these are all sites of companies that have closed. The reason why they closed doesn't matter. Sure, single model sites often close, but they are still relevant. There are also many single model sites that stay around indefinitely long after the model retires. You might have to take the higher closure rate of single model sites into account if you were pointing to these closures as evidence of a downturn in the business cycle, but I am not doing that. I am saying that it sucks that they closed, regardless of the reason for them closing.
I tried to edit out the ones in that directory which were still around but with missing content like suzerandall.net, but I did overlook that one, you are correct there.
Also, these sites were all legal in the US while they were around. There is a difference between losing credit card processing and being convicted of obscenity. Maybe a few of them like swallow-my.com, dirtytima.com, slye-blu.com and veronica-moser.com also featured #2 and would maybe have fallen foul of an obscenity prosecution, but none of those sites were brought to trial in the US. I only collect the pee content anyways.

^ Sigh....
A significant portion of those were not producing content.
That said if we were talking about trends in human lifespan would it not make sense to eliminate factors that skew the numbers like infant mortality rate? Why would I not do the same here and eliminate sites that were not going to last very long regardless of outside factors?
And the bestiality sites you've listed there (several) weren't legal in the US regardless of whether or not they were actually prosecuted or not. Plenty of other sites on their (scat related) weren't either.

Wasn't aware that any of the sites I listed delved into that territory, so which sites were those? If they did, I only came across their pee content. If you are thinking SickPuppy.com, that was not bestiality, only peeing and BDSM. Also, joandabunny.com was not bestiality, it was a Dutch site and it stands for Joan DaBunny.
That being said, maybe you know something that I do not, so please do me a favor and PM me the names of any sites that cause you concern and I will remove those sites from my collection.

Is it really that "too many companies have closed" ,or is it just that everyone with a camera and 5000 bucks started a website and the market was so over saturated that a lot of these cheap crappy sites were taken out by market correction.
I think one of the problems is the market got flooded with so much product; that it drove piracy to new levels because nobody could afford to keep up as a consumer, when one of porn's driving forces is to see every volume of a series or every scene from your favorite performer. (alternate theory, please don't bring out the pitchforks).
What I am saying is, piracy is a killer, yes.. However, perhaps a lot of it was market correction, and piracy was fueled in part by too much product and not enough dollars from the porn consumer to keep up with watching it.
I had my anabolic/diabilic kick back in the late 90s and early 2000s and tried to get every volume of a series. As they kept creating new series and kept increasing the frequency of each series having a release it was like "shit, I can't spent a grand a month on porn dvds""... maybe people faced with that situation started to pirate them instead of missing them.
Maybe part of the problem with the loss of so many companies is there were just too many out there pumping out too much product. One of the posts had a list of a bunch of defunct sites and most of them were likely cheap quality pumping put stuff from people just trying to make a buck because porn was hot.
Maybe another problem was too many companies resistant to membership based models and unlimited scene downloads in a month; and kept with demanding people pay 20 bucks for an entire release. Maybe a lot of them held onto that for too long.
Or was it management issues.. did Anabolic Diablic die because of the market or because they mis managed their business model and lost a lot of their great male talent and directors?
Just some alternate concepts for thought.

^^ Several of the sites on your list had a primary focus of bestiality. If you weren't aware of it then the original site had almost certainly closed and was run by a domain squatter by the time you encountered them, which further illustrates why just going by domains is a terrible way to identify porn production companies. The whole list is bogus.
In the event you somehow just missed all of the bestiality content while the original sites were up, all the more reason to suggest your original post was disingenuous since it appears you were trying to imply that your particular fetish was more significantly impacted, when in reality the closure of those sites likely had nothing to do with any pee content they may have had.
Yeah, a ton of domains aren't active anymore. I don't see how the inclusion of pee content has any relevance.

^^^ Cindy I'd say there is some merit to all of your theories. When you're talking about an industry as big as porn there is never going to be one single answer to any question.
To add to what you've said, (and I think you hinted at it with market correction) I think as people started looking to the internet for porn and it became easier for people to find all of their respective fetishes, people started to look exclusively for that kind of porn (whatever that may be) and at the same time performers realized they could bypass a lot of the legacy industry and move to a direct-to-consumer model where performers were making more money, but production companies of course suffered.
Just look at the thread titles in The Porn Pool and it's pretty clear that more and more people are moving away from "man and woman fucking" porn and are increasingly looking to satisfy some very particular fetish. If it happens to be a very popular fetish (IR, anal, etc) then that is something that large production companies can cater too, but as more and more people are moving away from that and the market becomes more segmented, it's harder for production companies to make products that will appeal to a large audience the way they could just a decade ago.
We literally have posters on here who are gay, complaining that straight porn doesn't cater to them enough. That's the industry now in a nutshell.
^ Thanks for the clarification. Apologies if I came off too harsh.

The industry definitely overproduced during the gonzo period and it became a race to the bottom but I don't think that had anything to do with piracy in the internet era.
People try to rationalize piracy for all sorts of reasons but the truth is that people do it because they can do it without any real consequences.

Interesting thread.
I just would like to see more Classic era stuff. Anybody remember Essex?
TCM had some oddball C Film that they considered good that takes place in Boston I think made in 1970 which starts off in slow motion with something like a witch burning trial? I looked up the Studio and everything they made is Adult besides this odd film. Can't remember the name, and did not watch much of it.
This is the stuff I would like to see.
I have been watching more Dorcel lately. A lot of how he makes his films is what I like. Although there are a few things I find annoying. To many non-facial cum shots is one thing.

Despite their content , listing sites isn't a good measure , many of those are owned by the same producer or were focused on one performer who is now retired or out of contract with that company, or maybe changed their stage name.
I believe this thread is meant to discuss the economics of porn production , a retired star can't be compared to the lack of paying customers

I think Vingear Syndrome has the rights to the Essex catalogue as they've got several of their films up on Exploitation.tv for viewing. They were a great company, their memorable logo is usually a good indication of a quality feature.
The TCM film sounds familiar, believe I may have watched it sleepily one night but the name escapes me.

If you'll indulge me, I believe these two studios died off around 8-10 years ago; Greedy and Bouncy. I believe Greedy is somehow affiliated with Digital Sin. Any way, I liked two series Greedy produced; I Film Myself and Fuck For Dollars. The premise of the first was giving the porn gal a camera to film themselves masturbating and the second was finding gals (really porn performers) out and about and inducing them to have sex for money. In one of the I Film Myself editions, Scarlett Fay gave a POV lap dance. Pretty hot. In one of the Fuck For Dollar editions they had Jean Jacobs; gorgeous girl with a short career. Jean mentions she's a stripper and says she picks out the young guy with a "pimply complexion" kisses them on the cheek. Jordan Ash mutters something like, "are they giving psychology classes in these places?" The two main non-sex characters were Jew Hefner and Dr. Leon Loveless (nod to the Wild, Wild West series?). Bouncy was run by Ty Endicott which had role playing. The lady was a dancer, student, maid, realtor, etc. There was one of Veronique Vega playing a student going to Japan. Another had Kylie Reese as a realtor. The woman would end up having sex with Endicott doing sort of a POV, but often there was smoking, foreplay, etc. There was one of Natasha Nice as a maid. I saw the trailer and Natasha speaking French and as a French maid was hot. Never managed to score of copy of that one, unfortunately. All these would be considered "vanilla," but I liked the fun and humor in them.

I enjoyed the films put out by Moonlight Entertainment. One of Roxanne Blaze's first appearances was for them. The company was alive around 1990. M. Stone, the only director I remember, had an interesting style. His scenes were long and quiet.

BlueBird was the one I was thinking of. Their head honcho peddled off the company a couple of years back for a nice chunk of change.
Silverstone may be one of the next to go. Kinda liked their Pickup Lines series
Hollywood Video was around in the 80's and 90's (purchased by Filmco?)
