I was just surfing as I always do when BOOM! my connection was suddenly gone. No problemo, I thought. I'll just reset the modem. Works the first time 70% of the time. Not so simple. Over the next two hours, I reset, unplugged, rebooted my computer. Nothing seemed to work. The Windows "Diagnose and repair" tool kept telling me it found a problem that couldn't be fixed automatically (might be nice if it told me what it was). I finally gave up in frustration and went to take a shower. I came back to find the connection had fixed itself in my absence. What the fuck? Oh well. This shit's weird. [Link] |

Eventually they concluded that my router/modem was faulty and authorized me to get a free replacement. Meanwhile I had bought a second modem to use while the replacement was being shipped, but before I got a chance to plug it in, my service magically reappeared with the old modem. My ISP attributed the entire two day outage to some unspecified "fault with the carrier's exchange equipment". As a former data communications analyst, I was definitely NOT impressed. |
