This is right up my alley. I hate raincoater material. I love erotica. I am Andrew Blake's biggest fan. Please allow me the opportunity to voice several of my opinions (and they are only opinions), as if anyone really cares what I have to say -- How do I define "the lighter side?" 1. It is respectful of women. And more often than not in revels in their beauty. It celebrates the female form. 2. It includes passion as an emotion. Sex is exhibited as an act expressing the emotion. Sex is not just a base act done simply for pleasure. 3. There is character development. There has to be chemistry, or #2 above won't work. 4. There are better than average production values. The sets, the lighting, the costumes, the music, all help to set the mood. Again, in support of #2 above. And I might add, properly it is shot on film not video. 5. The men are attractive. There are exceptions to the above. I think of one of my favorite films of all time ZAZEL, as well as Blake's more recent works. These are more done as "art" than "story." I still think NIGHT TRIPS is the greatest adult film of all time. It has all the elements. (On the obverse, I think Blake has fallen into a rut, and as far as his recent works are concerned, once you have seen one, you have seen them all.) I do not think FASHIONISTAS qualifies as "the lighter side" because of the level of sexual heat, although it certainly contains the other elements. (I loved FASHIONISTAS, by the way!). I want to see more internal cumshots, and fewer popshots! While I enjoy the beauty and sensuality of softcore, because it is not explicit, it lacks the level of heat and intimacy I want to see. Because the adult film industry, generally speaking, does not currently cater to me, I find myself more often than not mining the classics from the 1970s. I'll step off my soapbox for now. I am just on a personal rant about what I think is "best." A general rule of thumb with Blake -- The older the work, the more plot and the more men; The newer the work, the less plot, the fewer men.Naturally, the presence of men is going to influence certain aspects of the film, especially heat (passion) and cumshots. And he is not known for his plots, but rather his production values and cinematography. He plays precise attention to details. From every little item on a set, to the tiniest piece of jewelry on each woman, they were meticulously chosen. He is essentially an artist who uses film for a canvas. At least that is what he evolved into. Originally he was an adult film director who made beautiful movies. Rarely will you ever hear the actors during the sex, as usually he uses contracted music. I would suggest you watch NIGHT TRIPS, that was his first and greatest. Then watch maybe HIDDEN OBSESSIONS, which was from the middle of his career. | TonyC Comstock Films 2523 Posts 8/03 | Posted - Aug 4 2003 : 10:19PM Without ever having been on the set of a Blake production, I'd hazard to guess that perhaps one of the reasons you don't hear sync sound in his movies is because (when you can get away with it) shooting MOS is *much* easier/cheaper than shooting sync sound. By "legit movie" standards, porn budgets are preposterously low. Shooting sync sound at the same level as his visuals might simply be a budget buster; he's certainly developed a production approach/style that makes sync sound unneccesary. -T.C. [Link] |
