Editor's Note: The following review was taken from a VHS screener of No Limits - it will be updated once the DVD is available with information about the disc's bonus features and A/V quality. Director Nic Andrews takes one of my favorite Michael Douglas movies, The Game, and turns it into a taut, erotic adult thriller in No Limits, a new movie from Digital Playground starring Devon.
Andrews has clearly established himself as the best feature director in the adult film world, bringing us vampires in Dark Angels, the seedy side of the strip world in Devon Stripped and the fast and furious action of Rush. Now he has delved deep into the psyche of the human mind in what may well be his darkest and most daring endeavor to date.
The movie opens like so many other typical adult films, as Devon plays Adrianne Willis, a married businesswoman who is so obsessed with her job that she is finding little time to spend with her husband, Robert (Cheyne Collins). Devon works diligently to impress her boss, but he all but ignores her, taking credit for the work she has done during a pivotal meeting.
Expressing her concerns to a co-worker played by Brittany Skye, Brittany relates a story of a previous job where she impressed her boss (Herschel Savage) by sleeping with him. The film then flashes back to this encounter and we get to see Herschel and Brittany go at it on an office desk.
On his birthday, Cheyne decides to give Devon a gift – a card with the letters “RCS” on it, and instructions to go to this place and check it out. Devon thinks she’s been given an appointment for some marriage counseling, but when she arrives at the RCS building, she is put through a number of physical and mental tests which the owner (played by Mike Horner) insists is necessary for insurance reasons.
One of the tests that Devon is required to take involves her looking at a screen containing pictures and words. When the pictures start becoming sexual in nature, Devon gets turned on and starts masturbating. The next morning, she gets a call at work from RCS that simply states that she is being dropped as a client for insurance purposes. Devon is a bit upset and leaves a message on her cell phone for her husband, but doesn’t think much of it the rest of the work day.
At the end of the day, Devon is one of the last people leaving the building and she accidentally runs across one of her fellow workers, Jesse Jane, in the middle of a lesbian tryst with Jessica Drake in one of the office cubicles. This is Jesse’s first-ever adult scene, and while it’s nothing spectacular as far as girl/girl scenes go, it gives viewers a tempting taste of what Jesse will be providing for our viewing pleasure in future films.
Devon runs into Jessica again in the elevator on her way home. But the elevator gets trapped between floors and both Jessica and Devon have to escape by climbing out. Realizing she’s left her bag and cell phone in the elevator, Devon asks Jessica for a lift home. The next morning, Devon notices that Cheyne is not at home and surprisingly her purse and cell phone have somehow reappeared on her kitchen table. Opening up her purse, Devon finds photos of her husband beat up, and then gets a shocking phone call in which she is told she has two days to come up with $100,000 or her husband will be killed.
Devon calls Jessica up and has her come over to see if she can help out. But things aren’t all they appear to be with Ms. Drake, and we soon discover that she is behind the kidnapping. Drugging Devon, she takes her to an abandoned building where, tied up, she is forced to watch Jessica get it on with Cheyne. Also working with Jessica are two thugs played by Barrett Blade and Robby D., and Devon seduces Barrett into a wild sexual coupling (my personal favorite in the movie) in order to make her escape.
Retrieving her husband and racing toward the building’s roof (why do heroines always run up the steps when they should be running down them?!) Devon is about to find out what is really going on and what all this has to do with her visit to RCS. Fans of David Fincher’s The Game will know what is coming, but for those who haven’t seen this film, I won’t spoil the ending by giving it away here.
It’s rare to find an adult film where the story is as good as the sex, and even rarer to discover one in which you could cut out the sex completely and still have a good movie – but that’s exactly what one gets with No Limits. While I enjoyed most of the sexual action in the film, I also found myself engrossed in the story, and wondering what would happen next.
The only negative result of the release of No Limits may be that Nic Andrews is just too talented to stay in the adult industry. He’s certainly good enough for mainstream work, and one can only hope that he’ll give adult fans a few more gems like No Limits before Hollywood recognizes his talent and takes him away.
