I've been reading and discovering that more and more porn actresses are escorting. From what I understand, due to the increase of porn piracy and economy, there are less production of movies so performers are bringing the real thing to the consumer. I compare this to the music industry, where cd sales have been eaten up by free mp3s and musicians have to play more live shows to make up for the loss of revenue
So is the new model going to be girls doing only a few movies per year (kind of like music videos) to help advertise themselves and focus more on making house calls? Have more porn stars gone back to simply stripping?
For example, I've noticed Audrey Hollander hasn't been in any thing all year (since last year's Everybody Loves Lucy) and will finally be showing up in Hocus Pocus XXX. I've also noticed that she (and Otto) is advertising escorting. Unless something happened to Audrey to take off for this amount of time from making movies, I'd say that she's holding to this new model by doing fewer, but higher profile gigs, keeping her face and name out there just enough, and going the new route of charging to be up close and personal with her fans for more solid work.
Also, are these performers get anything out of running their own websites and content?

This is a myth.
Live shows don't make money.
Only the commercially most successful stars can make a living on live shows.
Most bands make hardly enough money on an evening for the fuel to the next gig.
Live shows promote shellac/vinyl/CD. Always has been this way.
Respect the musician. Buy his CD.
Respect the porn star. Buy her DVD.

"I've been reading and discovering that more and more porn actresses are escorting...."
Which begs the question yet again. Are the performers really prostitutes or actresses.

Neither, they are 'pornstars' who are now accessable to fans in many different forms.

I've heard many times from some rock stars in interviews that they do not make money off albums and album sales, that their money comes from the live shows, selling t shirts at the live shows, and all the merchandise sales that go along with live shows.
As an altogether different idea, I know this guy who works in robotics, and he says that within 75 to maybe 100 years there will be absolutely lifelike female sex robots, who look and act and sound just like the real thing, and you seriously would not know she is artificial, and when you order her, you'll be able to order the brunette or blonde or redhead, the bitchy model or girl next door or shy girl, the asian, the latina, the blonde bimbo model, and she'll respond to your likes and dislikes, yet have her own respective personality type, and she'll learn from your actions accordingly. He says this is coming down the road and it will be a billion dollar industry.

It's different for established headline concert acts. Less popular groups touring bars, clubs, and other smallish venues really do need you to visit their merchandise table. Otherwise they will eventually decide that this music thing is an expensive hobby that they can't afford.

The pornstar doesn't get any of the money I spend on her DVD, so it's kinda an irrelevant way of showing respect/appreciation.

Are you serious?
Though she doesn't get royalties, buying a DVD shows respect and appreciation for her work.
If a DVD with her cover sells she will get booked more often.

^Perhaps, but...
You're operating on the theory that covers sell DVD's and only covergirls matter.
But what of all the other performers who are not considered covergirl-worthy; she's 'just another porn chick' and any credit (if such exists) for the DVD sales are attributed to the headliner girls (if your theory is true).
Most of the DVD's I buy are because of someone other than the covergirl.
So, in my case, I still believe DVD sales are irrelevant to "my girl".
Yes, we should support the industry and buy DVD's. But there's little connection between buying particular DVD's and supporting individual pornstars. If it makes you feel you are giving respect and appreciation by buying a girl's DVD, that's great. But it has little or no tangible benefit to her.

You HEAR that more and more porn stars are escorting but more often than not, the ads you see for a specific porn star is fake.
As far as bookings go, Audrey Hollander doesn't book with a talent agency like Otto does so if she gets any work it is because producers hunt her down and get her to even agree with it. Otto takes on regular work, she just doesn't seem to want to though herself.
I booked her for Hocus Pocus XXX and had a very hard time trying to originally even find her to do so. But I knew right away she would be THE perfect person for the park. I mean seriously .... who would make a better porn star Bette Midler than her? :)
Now as far as making money goes ... I don't know about rock stars but as far as porn stars goes, a solid performer can make a ton of money doing live shows, both in person and through live cam shows.
A live show is a great great great way for a performer to bank on her name. Pure and simple, the more famous the porn star, the more she will make on the show.
As far as the websites go, pretty much no. A few performers make some money but for the most part, the girls who sign up with these "networks" really don't make anything. The only thing they get out of their website is taken advantage of.
Girls like Nikki Benz and Nina Mercedez do things themselves and as a result tend to have a much higher profit margin.
Girls who have a real site, with their own personal webmaster can make several thousand per month from their website. In comparison there is one top 10 porn star I know of that made $23 off of her website last month.

I would think that girls who have already been in high-selling releases are more apt to be hired again, whether they were on the front cover or not. I wouldn't underestimate the importance of a girl already being associated with financial successful movies and having a reputation for being easy to work with on set for her getting cast in more movies from the good companies in the future. If she hasn't been the cover girl much in the past, she may become one after producers hear that she's developing a loyal following.

Less popular groups never made much money off their store-sold albums/CDs either, the music industry saw to that. It's a bit disingenious (not by you, rather juha's original comment) to insinuate that not enough musicians can live off touring when the situation is no different for any other income stream their music might produce.

I don't think my comment was disingenuous.
I'm talking about the many many artists that didn't get rich but were able to make a living on selling 20.000 records a year in the past.

The "question" is: can you make any accurate statement about what ALL performers are? The answer is NO.

Adult performers escorting (even often) isn't really anything new at all. I remember back in my blogging days that this conversation came up constantly.
Also, it's not just common in the States. Many UK models also escort. Sometimes porn shoots are more supplementary to their escorting incomes than anything else.
As far as the "actress vs. prostitute" debate, I can't find myself caring one way or another. I don't look down on either profession.
I think it's safe to say, though, that both careers demand a certain amount of performance. Don'tcha think?

What is it when you pay for a license to use a piece of software? What is it when someone pays someone else to mop a floor or keep their records in order or whatever it is? It's all the same shit. It's only people's prejudices, ignorance and obstinance that differentiates pimping yourself out by spreading your legs and doing it any other way. If you think licking your boss's butthole figuratively is more dignified than doing the real thing, maybe the joke's on you.
Who cares?

Well, I have to admit that I get sick of half-assed performers calling themselves "porn stars" when they've done nothing to deserve it.
Being a star in this industry or any other takes hard work and dedication. Not all of that proverbial work is in direct relation to fucking on film. But I think we can all agree that being a star involves more than taking a cock in the ass a couple of times a week.
Porn Star - Shows up on time, works hard on the set, does her research, markets herself properly (to fans and studios alike), avoids the stereotypical trappings of the biz (i.e. drug abuse, etc.), manages her own finances well, can act professionally when every one else acts like they're 14 years old.
Porn Chick - Does only some or none of those things and ultimately gets chewed up and spit out by the porn business meat grinder.

Porn "star" is an aphorism with an acquired cultural definition that has nothing to do with status, ability, or any of the characteristics implied by the use of the word "star" in other professions. It has come to mean to most simply one who performs in pornography.

I understand your point of view and I believe you're right to some capacity, but I do think there are some of us who see this differently.
I think the level of fandom has something to do with it. I think the average person who is either not a fan or a casual fan would fit into the category you describe. I think the more dedicated fans probably see it a bit differently as they have seen performers come and go over and over again with only a few having real "star" power that lasts more than a year.

Then every time you buy a dvd or a website subscription, send an email off to the owner specifically thanking him for using ________ in the production. That's also an advantage with websites, they all (or they all should be) keep stats on what's downloaded how many times.

I think the industry deserves to make a sustainable profit. The piracy has to be enforced to some degree, you can't have 1 person buying material and then posting it for free for everyone else in the world.
Somehow they should code purchased downloaded files so it can only work on the IP address it was purchased on for say 1 year. After that it can be shared. Same principle for CDs wher after a year you can get used CDs online for fractions of the original sale $.
Have to side with the industry here. There has to be some balance. Like some music artists who sell their CDs on their websites for $6 there has to be a reasonable price for DVDs.
There are costs to produce the material that have to be reasonably recovered or the quality of the product will decline.
On another level, purchases are like making donations to your favourite charity in principle where the cause means sustaining the performers.

Its really true , especially here in Los Angeles , California . Now more and more big time x-rated porn actresses and fetish models are offering their sexual services for real big time money!!! :)
Why do I know this?
Because Ive hired some big time porn ladies for their "outcalls" :)
And they sure do deliver the top hardcore sex fantasys they portray in all their videos.
Like for example, I hired pornstar Mason Moore for $300 for 2 nights and I basically fucked the hell out of her slutty nasty xxx-rated pussy, mouth and asshole and she was SO GOODDDDDDDDD :) SHE MADE ME CUM MORE THAN 4 TIMES IN 2 NIGHTS
and it was so worth the money. I say screw the pornos , dont download anything from the internet, just hire a professional pornstar escort for a really good time in the privacy of your home!
PS: You can sometimes make a request to film your very own amateur porn video with the porn escorts, but you have to ask nicely and pay big time $$$ :)

Well thats the newest thing :) you know?
Maybe this is the start of a new adult entertainment revolution.
Instead of watching porn videos at home, we can just hire these actresses to come over to our place and basically satisfy our erotic porn fantasys IN REAL LIFE.
I know from my personal experience, I have fucked just about every girl in the business and Im not joking around.....so instead of going on and on about how watching porn videos is still cool and wonderful, I will provide a list of every adult actress who I have personally hired , paid for and had real sex with:

So you dont need to be a male pornstar to have sex with these women, who are available for the right amount of money to anyone. Thats heartening. The question is what is the attraction of being a male porn star?

Skank, some performers escort, and others don't. But rest assured, the ones that do escort would expect to be paid a LOT more than the figure Vader1 quoted for Mason Moore. And I know that some of the performers that do NOT escort were named in his list of women he has supposedly slept with. Vader1 is a guy who has been banned from ADT many times before, and I wouldn't take him seriously.

excellent and interesting thread everyone. regarding Vader's questionable "pricing" here is what i get from Mimi Miyagi from being part of her list serve (old prices but the point i'm making here is about the real ballpark figure for escorting from adult biz stars):
30 minutes=$500
60 minutes=$1000
60 minutes with/filming=$1300
120 minutes= $2000
full day (9 hours)= $5000 (minimum)
http://mimimiyagi.com/meetmimi.htm

so like someone said earlier Vader's a teenie weenie bit off.

I know the person has been banned, but $300 for two nights only exists in Thailand. Even a crack whore charges about $120 an hour on average (from what I have seen and heard on cop shows and from personal contacts; they seem to charge by the blow job (five minutes or so) or sex act (maybe 45 minutes), I have higher standards). An escort service many times charges upwards of $1000 a night for an attractive woman and you usually have to take the escort to dinner and a movie or show first before getting laid.

escorting is illegal guys let's be honest about it. it's not like these girls are going to be risking going to jail for a couple hundred bucks.

i respect reality
YES they are prostitutes
from the very moment
when they promote
themselves in a sexual
mannerism and even more
so if they get naked for
something softcore and
so forth
and i know thats cold
to say,but its the truth
and you cant overlook it

i know otherwise.... prostitutes sell themselves for money (agreed?)
but the very point is this :
if a person's pic's or video's gets other people off and they pay for this
thats selling yourself "sexually" THUS the prostitute term applies without question
unless you want to spit in the face of reason/truth

^ In some states, that is true. In California and New Hampshire, sex for video is specifically exempted from the legal definition of "prostitute". Here in Michigan, the producer can be charged with Pandering and the performer with Prostitution. Both carry 20 year prison sentences here. If the producer hires someone that does not live in the state, state (Michigan, anyway) and federal laws against interstate prostitution could theoretically apply. This is why I give the advice to not film porn in Michigan -- the laws are just too severe to chance it here.
