I'm scandalized, Stoya, by your scandilous blog post on Xcritic. From what I've read I thought you would have voted. But instead, no, you don't? Was it all because of Biden and no Hillary? Sure, Obama and Biden will we unable to do a lot of things they say they wish, either due to the current economic situation or the forces in Washington that control all, but a vote for Obama was more than a vote for one of two sides of the same coin. Obama is something that very few people believed would happen in their lives. And he is more accepting of the LGBT community than McShame and his cronies ever will be. Thankfully, Cali's Prop 8 has no legal leg to stand on, a quik law suit and its toast.
Mostly, I'm registered in PA, not CA, so I didn't have a vote in the prop 8 matter (you really don't want to get me started on how marriage is a religious institution, whatever happened to separation of church and state, and how the real issue is partners being accorded the same legal rights as married couples, regardless of those partners' sexual orientation), and I'm having a year where most things that come out of my mouth prompt my older friends to say that I'm a nihilist. Philosophical categories aside, years of work for the greater good in an abstract sense have yielded no visible results, I only have so many hours in the day, and I personally care more about dragging friends and acquaintances down to planned parenthood for their yearly std test and working on smaller community issues than I do about casting a single vote in a capitalist driven bureaucracy that appears (in my currently myopic view of the world) to make no difference since both candidates are politicians *and* have far less power to make whatever changes they have promised than they like to tell american voters they do. Hillary I would have voted for. Not because she's a woman (although I stand by my statement at AVN last year that Hillary/Obama would have been the best solution because it would have knocked out both of the main minorities and put a person with white house experience in with an opportunity for Obama to gain some more experience before being given the actual presidency), but because she continued to hold her head up, do her job as first lady, and stand by her country and husband (basically fulfill her commitments) through two terms of Bill Clinton's presidency and all of his antics. Sure, she probably has something to prove, but unlike the other candidates, there was something about her previous behavior in the political arena that gave me faith in what she says. The thing about voting for a politician to fill an office is that every presidential candidate that has been elected has promised things that they have not followed through on. I feel as though my vote should be cast based on what parts of their platform I think they will actually make good on, not just on what they say. When confronted with two candidates that don't inspire any feelings of trust in me, and therefore don't make me think that they will follow through on what they say, I chose not to pick one. Secondarily, while I love Philadelphia I've lived there on and off for about 50% of my adult years, and will probably end up moving back to SoCal for convenience purposes. I don't feel I have the right to vote in the positions between U.S. president and head city dogcatcher, because I most likely will not be around to deal with the ramifications of my decisions. It is quite reasonable for people to say I am misinformed on some of the things I've made statements about, and fully accept the probability that I am wrong, but lots of things are wrong and all I can do is act in the way that feels most right for me. If you don't like it, fine, don't jerk off to it. As stated on another forum, I'd rather have you hate me for being honest than love me for only talking about vaginas, oral sex, small dogs, and how much money I spent on my wardrobe last year.

Marriage conveys all sorts of rights, of inheritence, visitation in hospital, etc..., and marriage itself is WAY older than the Christian Church.I got blasted on another board for voicing the same concerns regarding how much Obama will actually do. The two things that really convinced me though, was that his official advisors have nothing to do with the current government and financial situation, and that his health-care proposals are possibly able to improve the US system, though not to the level in Canada. No offense taken whatsoever :)I really don't think I'm a nihilist. I think it's more that I'm in a period of trying to figure out what really does matter, both to me and in a larger sense. When I get back to the states I'd like to pursue this conversation on marriage outside of religion.I can see your point, although putting new people in an existing system can only change so much in a given period of time. Especially since our government is set up to give no one absolute power.Also a good point. Time to hit the streets and start learning about where I am right now.For the past few months, and over the next year (or more) it's basically that where I live is where I keep all my clothes and sewing materials, and I get to be home somewhere between 4 and 10 days a month. Not all of my time away from home is work, some is traveling for family, education, or vacation, but living in SoCal would mean that my week every month or two that I spend shooting movies would also be spent at home. I'm still adjusting and trying to figure out what my schedule is going to be like long term before I make a decision on where to live, which means I've spent the past four years alternating between LA and Philadelphia. I *wish* landlords would let me sign 3 month leases.

Religion is basically dead in the water, politics fills the void and provides a belief system for the easily lead to follow.I started a thread in the polls section last week, about voting being a waste of time, no one was really interested in debating it though.

Maybe those with interest in debating such things don't check the polls section. Regarding Hedonism, pleasure can be a great part of life but a diet of only pleasure would lead to a severe lack of character, no? Stoya why limit yourself to Philly or California. I want to personally invite you to the lovely Pacific Northwest. But the real reason to move here the people are just fucking crazy.
