It killed the sleazy adult movie theater business and enabled average person to watch porn in the privacy of their home. It also opened up a huge (now gigantic) market for adult movie producers who no longer had to deal with zoning local laws restricting their sales. They would still face obscenity cases here and there but it was much harder if not impossible for the conservatives and religious right to restrict porn distribution and viewership with VCR. Now it is a multi-billion dollar international business all because of the VCR. Lot of people may say so what the last VCR is being produced. Well consider that there are still tons of adult movies that are still only available on VHS because they were never transferred to DVD!! The companies that owned rights to those movies are either dead or those chose not to spend the money to redistribute them on DVD. Luckily a lot of them have been transferred and uploaded to tube sites. I know tubes sites are looked down upon by ADT but in this case I think they serve a good purpose. They provide archive for those old movies which would be lost forever otherwise. Cannot expect Library of Congress to archive copies of porn old movies. Some fans have uploaded copies of those movies to pirate forums also. Several years ago I started converting my collection of VHS tapes to DVD then to hard drive. But even I still have boxes of VHS tapes sitting around that need to be transferred. Luckily I still have couple working VCRs and DVD recorders to convert them. But as you can see that equipment is being phased out now. Soon it will become hard to find DVD recorders also. For example, nobody makes DVD recorders for DVD+R DL now (i.e. double layer discs large enough to copy entire commercial DVD9 discs). The content guys planned this long time ago when they started the push towards using HDMI cables. They told consumers it was to deliver HDTV but it also allows them to reduce piracy by making it harder to copy videos or limiting the copy to SD instead of HD quality. The next phase is to eliminate home recording devices like VCRs and DVD recorders. That would leave DVRs which record to internal hard drive (e.g. Tivo). Those boxes have software and recording formats to prevent theft and copying. But even those are being replaced by cloud based DVRs where your select what to record them playback on demand, but the video is stored on your cable providers servers. But that's the commercial mainstream market. The adult movie guys still use DVDs and others have websites with streaming or download model. Regardless VHS and DVD collectors should be aware VCRs and soon DVD recorders may be almost impossible to find or sold for ridiculously inflated prices. If you have collections of old VHS tapes and DVDs start converting them to hard drive ASAP, and you may want to purchase a VCR or DVD recorder now while you still can if you think you will need one later to do transfers.
