I've heard that they even look at what content files you have on your system and if they find pirated content they could report you to the feds. But I'm more worried about them looking at adult movie files I may have and sending that info to someone (e.g. NSA or FBI). One solution would be to move that content to a Linux box instead I guess. Has anybody else looked into this or thought about it. Few years ago I would not have cared but since reading about NSA and Snowden I'm paranoid. [Link] |

Unless you're going to use porn to blow up a building or assassinate an official--they're not going to care. The FBI and local or state law enforcement -- yeah, they may care. The NSA? They have other fish to fry. Back to the topic so I don't completely derail the thread: I haven't paid much attention to it. I've locked the brakes at Windows 7 and I refuse to downgrade to 8 or beyond. My opinion of Microsoft, which was relatively positive a dozen years ago, has gone into to the toilet with each successive Windows downgrade after XP. On the one hand, I'm not so paranoid that I worry about MS and big-brother issues with the government. I do believe they'd manage a way to determine what they believe are pirated files and manage to cripple or disable them in some sneaky fashion. And I still don't equate "Microsoft" with "security". How much of that is due to malevolence and how much is due to the complexity of a massaive operating system and a huge, distributed team of in-house and outsourced programmers--that's open to debate. IMO: if you're going to keep sensitive stuff that you're truly worried about, you need to put it on a system that's offline from everything, and use sneaker-net instead. [Link] |
