I was just thinking. Seeing as how there won't be much shot in the next 30-60 days, there is still plenty companies can work on releasing with no new stuff shot during this time.
-Catching up on back catalogs not yet released on dvd. This can allow some companies that haven't yet caught up on putting out thier older vhs catalog on dvd. Companies like Evil Angel and Anabolic have lots of older titles that have yet to be put to dvd, they can work on that kind of stuff while there is nothing to shoot. I know the process takes longer than 30 days and there is probably enough movies in the can to keep releasing recently shot stuff for awhile, but a few months down the road these companies won't have new product to put out due to the next two months, so getting some older stuff to the dvd departments will allow for it to be dvd ready when they need material to release, whenever that may be. -Compilations. Especially with some of the retired stars no longer working. Other than a few Vivid and maybe Caballero comps, there are far too few star based comps with the likes of Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn, Christy Canyon, Vanessa Del Rio, Seka, Erica Boyer and others on dvd. Or even something like a "best of" Belladonna. Evil Angel and Anabolic have enough of her scenes to do comps. Maybe some some companies can use this time to work on releasing this type of stuff onto dvd.
Walter, you read my mind. I was just about to start a topic suggesting such a solution. There are always new females entering the business, and, from what I've been reading, people would like to see new male talent, too. I would suggest forming a "clean talent pool", people who have not been active in several months, people who have never been active, and talent isolated from the pool of possibly infected - that is, people who only shoot with a single partner. I would think World Modeling(or some other agency that handles talent) might be able to set up such a pool without much trouble. Sure, things might slow down a little, but I don't think that means grinding to a halt. It might also prevent something JimmyD mentioned on his site - Price gouging. He suggests that as talent becomes more desperate for work, their scene fees would fall, and that production companies would take advantage of that, and continue to do so long after the crisis was past. Perhaps by creating an elite talent pool it might even go the other way, this group of talent would be in high demand, and could then afford to demand not only better scene rates, but, perhaps, better working conditions in general. Who knows, maybe THAT would persist beyond the current crisis.
Bringing in new girls isn't going to work. They need guys to fuck them, and seeing as how the industry only uses a handful in almost every movie, a lot of them are on the quarantined list. Not just that, but I would think most girls thinking about getting into porn now would think twice with the shit storm going on right now.
Agree MB, the gushing flood of new gurls thinking of entering the Flesh market prior to this HIV outbreak has now turned into a small droplet of water.
I think the only thing that most companies have to do is just increase momentarily their rate of production in Europe. Most of the gonzo studios are already shooting a good part of their production in Prague/Budapest etc... Now, for a couple of months they just have to produce the whole of their material there. The only caution would be to not shoot females/males who had been working in Southern California in the last month, who are usually not many anyways because of visa problems, and to not fly in there American talent but to use just the local ones. All in all there's plenty of Euro studs down there.
The companies that aren't shooting in Europe yet (Zero Tolerance comes to mind) just need to send a cam-operator there and contact a local talent agency.

I would rather some of these companies try to shoot in new locales such as Japan(with local talent). Europe and South America may be cheaper to shoot in but I for one am getting tired of these locales. Japan would be a new location and American directors shooting Japanese talent would be a welcome change. I would also guess it would be safer to shoot movies there than in some places in Europe and South America.

And how does any of this help the performers that are off of work for 2 months?
I wouldn't worry about price gouging though. In 1998, the trend was that a lot of girls left the business due to fear. A lot of the ones that stayed raised their prices if the scene was going to be non-condom. And a lot of girls successfully switched to condom use for a time.
How can you possibly compare Europe with South of America in terms of safety and mediacl controls? Why don't you try to read soemthing before saying such things?
How about releasing some extras fetures that normally come on the other DVD's as DVD's in their own right. I'd certainly pay for a compilation of behind the scenes, and bonus footage type disc because some of that stuff is better than half the scenes.
I guess they can get so-called "regular" jobs, esp if they really need rent money. Plus, for the girls, signings, appearances, strip clubs, even "escorting". How about recording some commentary tracks for some of the upcoming releases/rereleases? (Rarely seen in porn - probably rightly so.) I wonder if we are going to see "comp" titles and "best of" coming out?
how about girls doing cam shows, they are fun and bring in nice income..there are plenty of programs going around! You can contact me and i can tell you more, Bobbi also is working for another great cam company, and both we are makin the $$ in a very safe place. Usually as a extra, now just have to do it a bit more! Its not porn money but you can make a decent living;) For the time no one is shooting. terri@terrisummers.com

I have never lived with AIDS. I would have hoped that this situation would get people to learn a little more about what what HIV and AIDS actually are. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the point when a person's T-cell (a type of white blood cell that is VERY important to effective immune reaction) count is below a very low number AND they have at least 2 opportunistic infections, OIs, at the same time. OIs can include Karposi's sarcoma (the purplish lesions on the skin that people associate with AIDS), pneumonia, or several other major immune deficiency symptoms.
As an adult actor I knew that there was a risk in this job and that more than likely something like this would happen sometime, That is why it is a good idea to put back some of this money that us performers make for emergencies like this. I know it is hard to do but it is almost a necessary thing to do, and just think of it this way, if you leave the industry without ever having to use the emergency fund then you have some money saved for other things like school. I am a film student as well as an actor for adult. I want to be a mainstream and adult film Director, that is my passion. I saved some money for situations like this and now have made a path for my self with no stress. I can still go to school and pay my bills until this industry situation has passed. I am not putting light on to the situation at hand, just stating that we should all be prepared. It may be to late for a lot of people this time but use this situation as a learning curve for any other things that may come up in the future.
This is a GREAT idea! I would love to have selectable commentary tracks on the scenes on the DVD. Maybe the male and female talent both (all?) commenting on the track together as they watch the scene. It doesn't have to be earth shattering stuff, just how they felt as the scene was shot, anything funny that happened, whatever.
I thought would have been the obvious thing with xcon/adultcon/erotica in the next few months with signings and featured dancing in between....but the websites of the aforementioned events seemed...well quiet.
now would be a great time to go to the archives and put a little effort into the "Best Of"s just about ever company puts out and make them worth buying.
How about compilations of scenes of the current hottest actors/actresses that are still "in the can", mixed with their best already-released scenes?
If RLD were to put together a comp DVD of their Brianna Blaze (I'm hoping there are still un-released scenes of hers, but I'm biased!), Nautica, Jennifer Luv, Serena South, etc. scenes (just to name a few), I'd be all over it!

During this hard time we at PXP are shooting a POV style solo masterbation tape so we can give the talent some money and keep them working during this HIV mess we have going on. At least it will help some of the girls out and put food on the table. The first solo tape will be directed by Sean Michaels and will feature Teagan.
Show us women going stir crazy because they can't fuck. Pretend like all the starlets are under house arrest or something and they're itching to get out. (Not itching because of STDs, mind you, but because they're horny and the work stoppage is depriving them of STDs (Super-Tall-Dongs.)
So the girls start looking around the house for things to rub up against, you know. They find household appliances like toaster ovens and washing machines. They find the vacuum and the plunger and the turkey baster and the feather duster and the vegetables in the refrigerator. They hump the refrigerator. They find garden gnomes that are phallic enough to sit on. They go in search of a fire hydrant. Etc......
And to make it kinky, the camera can pan back and forth between a woman humping salad tongs and some dogs playing in the back yard.
This is a bit off topic, but regarding monkey power's theme of going stir crazy because they can't fuck. I read on another site the other day (luke ford?) that Brian Surewood is going to try and "save" his load for the next 30-60 days and then return to work for one big explosive scene
It doesn't. But the title of the thread is "Things companies can do to fill in for lost shoots", not "What can performers do to make up for lost income from shooting scenes".
The girls probably have a few more options than the guys do. I would think that now might be a good time to do some dancing (even house dancing would be better than nothing). Another option could be finding some print work.
I have no idea what options the male performers have.
Tricia, will Evil Angel shoot some masturbation movies? I would kill to see some Buttman masturbation movies because he's the only director in my opinion who can shoot girls the right way all the time.
I dont think solo scenes really goes over too well with alot of fans and ofcoarse it wont sell as much as the real b/g stuff. so I agree with this suggestion. In fact , why not just change & switch over to condom use completely. I mean, how important is it to have scenes done bareback anyway?
I will never ever buy condom-only porn, that's how important it is to me!

And I won't shoot a condom only movie it's pointless you still have oral sex and facials so why the condom in the first place and you can still contract STD's by wearing a condom the HIV viruse is small enough to go through a condom and that's a medical fact and no condom is 100% the only 100% safety you have is to not fuck at all.
I was thinking the same thing. How does unemployment insurance work with independant contractors? Normally, a company with employees pays into the insurance fund. But that wouldn't apply to companies who only use independant contractors.
This isn't something that the studios can do for the talent and it's not something for people who need money immediately. But, it might be a good idea for all of those performers who have a website, but have done nothing with it because they "never have the time", to take this time to get those websites going.
It wouldn't hurt to learn a little about web design either. Although this is not a short term "get money now" answer, it could be a pretty good long term "get a lot of money over a period of time" answer.
