Is this just a "gee-whiz" gimmick gadget, or is there real-world use for it?
Maybe a spy or private detective could have a use for it. But who else?

Tilt shifting and variable focus has been around forever. It is an art effect lens...blurs certain things out and puts the focus directly on the subject intended.
The real world use for artistic and select focus is unlimited...

Actually, it's as limited as the photographer's imagination and ability to visualize what he/she wants in the finished product and then get it done in a reasonable amount of time without making the whole project much more complicated, time consuming and costly. Unfortunately, in porn, that's often a very severe limitation.

The real world use for tilt-shift is for perspective and distortion correction. Prior to the advent of Photoshop and high-end editing software there was no good way to correct for the distortion you'd get when photographing a tall building, for example. A tilt-shift lens allows you to correct for the distortion before the image even hits the film. They are also obscenely expensive. Last one I saw in person was several thousand dollars.

The lens in the picture above is a Lens Baby... not a true tilt-shift lens. You can google the name of the lens to see samples of it.
