HeyNow  Oblivious  Gold Star Hey! 5965 Posts 1/03 |  Posted - Feb 3 2008 : 2:40AMSeems like my golden oldie is about to poop out - it's locked up (or partially locked) a few times today. I took it the cover/case off, vacuumed it out, made sure the fans were working - just in case it was an overheating issue vs a software thing. Also running a spy program search. But anyhow it's time for a new one - sticking with Windows - anything to look for? HP okay? Aser? Just kidding about that one. I think I'd just as soon pop in to Best Buy and pick something up in the morning. I could go for the whole package or just the processor/cpu - I'm a thrifty Yankee at heart so cheaper is better. My last computer was homebuilt - I didn't really have the knowhow, but a techie friend helped pick the pieces...I remember we bought separate graphics and sound cards vs the integrated motherboards stuff. I'm installing and importing over emails onto something called Thunderbird - but that crapped out too hitting the server for new emails. I think I'm having a problem there! [Link] |

I was getting them left and right when I first got the machine. They gradually tapered off as I installed updates from MS. Not perfect and a little over what you were looking to pay ($1250 at Best Buy), but definitely a solid entry, and best of all - very upgradeable. More info on it here. If you'd prefer to customize before purchase, there is also the Gateway P Series. We got the P-6831FX in the last few days, and so far I'm very impressed: it runs WoW like a champ. The graphics card is currently the fastest on the market (for notebooks) and the 17" screen is awesome (it also has a line out if you want to plug it into a larger monitor). Regarding the touchpad mouse and casing, my HP Notebook is much nicer, but I paid a hell of a lot more money for the HP - and sadly, that's not very upgradeable.  I was seriously considering - i.e.  over - an HP Blackbird for later (viva tax refunds!), but after seeing the 6831FX I'm wondering why I'm even considering a desktop. The 6831 can definitely keep step with any behemoth I would end up having to move furniture to accommodate, and it's portable to boot. Good luck whatever you choose. [Link] |

I've had to replace a hard drive and cpu fan, but that's to be expected. Still running... using it right now. The hardest part, in my opinion, if you are not "into" it, is the myriad of components out there to select from. You've got to be sure that everything is compatible, and meets your needs, and is quality stuff, not junk. For someone that is into it, they stay up to date, and could rattle off various parts by just talking to you and asking you want to be able to do. It is a moving target, because that world changes so fast. If you don't have a geeky friend that will advise and help you in exchange for a dozen doughnuts and a case of Jolt cola, then maybe one of those places online would be ok. One was mentioned earlier in this thread - where you can design your system and have them build it. I'm sorry that I just don't know a particular one to recommend. [Link] |

For the most part I don't have any big software attachment to Windows. I do have a couple of reservations about an all-in-one unit like the iMac. I'll have to dig up a good ADT Mac thread.
