On the Daily Show, they highlighted his bluetooth-thing and said he was an asshole. What is the bluetooth thing on his head in that much-distributed photo of him in the car, and what about it implies that he's an asshole?

Actually, he might have said "douchebag" rather than "asshole."

It's a gadget worn on your ear, which wirelessly communicates with your cellphone.
Bluetooth is the name of the technology. While wearing it, the user can place and answer phone calls hands-free with no need to hold the actual cell phone to their ear. There is nothing unique about the bomber guy or his particular device; the "asshole" comment applies to all who wear the bluetooth headset 'all the time', instead of wearing it 'as needed'. For further explanation and insight, do a google search on "bluetooth assholes". THIS LINK gives a sense of the annoyance some people feel towards some users/wearers of bluetooth headsets.

Oh, okay. I knew what a bluetooth was, but I thought maybe that one was made out of platinum or something.
I know someone who wears one on her head all the time -- she thinks it's her lifeline, but there's nothing specific and nobody in particular on the other side, she's just twitchy. She's one of those people who can find 20 minutes to tell you how busy she is and how she can't spare a moment to talk. Then she digs through the mountain of stuff in her car and can't find whatever she's looking for because of all the other stuff she's 'busy' with. It's some kind of syndrome.

Don't you wear your headset through the hole in your ear, Chode?

hahaha naaaah. I couldn't bear wearing one of those things. I'm waiting on some bigger plugs for my ears, though. I ordered them last week. 1 1/4".

Do they have people yet, wearing more than one of them? Like, business on the right, personal on the left front, mistress-phone behind that?
Borg.
What's really funny is that for decades, there have been elderly deaf people too vain to wear a hearing aid because it shows. So they stay hard of hearing. Now that it's 'trendy' to have devices hanging on your head, they advertise those snoop-amplify things that look like a bluetooth but are clearly for people with hearing loss. Amusing.

Already, as far as I am concerned. They both look like idiots.

What I want to know is what is the sound quality like? On both ends? Is it easy to hear the person who's talking to you on one of those. It looks like one of those things that seems like a great idea but is really flawed because it just doesn't work well.
Or am I wrong and it works way better than it looks like it would?
By the way, this doesn't fit in too well with their characterization of him as "withdrawn" and "silent". I'm sort of a hermit. I'm what you'd call withdrawn. I don't have a bluetooth headset because I don't have any use for a cell phone.
