We've been with the same hosting company for 8 years. It's been a very good service but has become too expensive for our needs. We're downsizing. Over the course of the next two weeks we'll be transitioning to a new server at a new hosting company. I hope to make the transition as smooth and transparent as possible.
The switch to the new server will happen tonight. Most likely around 1 am EDT. I will have a "down for maintenance" page up during the transition period. There's bound to be a few things I overlook in the process so please feel free to post observations or bug reports here. Thanks.
There are a couple very minor things I still need to attend to but the process went very smoothly. I had rehearsed the process a couple of times in the past 10 days. Does the site appear to be operating at about the same speed in terms of page load times? We're on a faster server with more processor cores but the hard drives were switched from SAS to SATA. We have increased processor and memory speeds but significantly slowed down the storage system. The new server and host is about a third less expensive annually than our old setup.
I think the biggest improvement in performance might be due to the SSD we're using for the database transaction logs and temporary tables. The write bandwidth available over the SATA w/SSD is at least 1 hex higher than what we saw in the old server with a 10kRPM SAS drive. It's a totally nerdy thing but I love watching the performance monitor and seeing 10MB/sec written to the drive.
No, I did an experiment. There is a Gauge thread in Star Crossed that was bumped on St. Patrick's Day, and has 9 or 10 new posts made since then that have "Gauge" in the text at least once. But running a search for "Gauge" in Star Crossed, within the last 30 days finds only one of those new posts.
Danke Schoen. Fixed for Gauge (which I really used for just an example because I knew where there were a bunch of posts about her), and everything else I might want to search for.
Testing to see if I still end up with a blank screen after I post, like with the old site..... Edit: Yup, still happens. Same thing I originally reported in this older thread from two years ago. Which is odd since I now am using A) A new Mac, B) A new ISP and C) A new Router/Gateway. Oh well, no biggie.....site does seem faster now.
After you make a post there's a META-REFRESH that tells your browser to wait 2 seconds and then redirect to the topic you just posted in. Some browser security settings will disable meta refresh. So that might be what you're running into.
If you changed your avatar sometime in the week or so prior to the move it wouldn't have updated. I moved the data and images about 1 week before the actual public switch to the new server.
I can't say for sure but this forum seems to be running much better than it was on the old server. Used to be that pages would randomly hang for a while when loading. Sometimes if I was downloading a file in the background, ADT pages wouldn't load at all. It seems to work fine now.
Happy to hear that. The primary reason we switched was economics. The new server is significantly less expensive than the old one. I guess we should have changed years ago. We did upgrade the server from Win Server 2003 to 2008. Maybe that helped? I don't know.
