As usual these statements by the governmental bodies are always extremely vague. and I wondered if anyone may have insight or a good interpretation of what this means?
But will this invalidate the newish Human rights? Why do this any way, they must have found that a hell of alot of peolpe import dvds and that someone in the UK is loseing out on alot of cash!? This is very sad :( It seems they will clamp down again, if you read the report it seems very serious. Looks like i will be moving to the states sooner than i expected :)
This could be interpreted as HMCE/police etc will have more powers against people importing porn that is deemed indecent or obscene by the BBFCs new R18 guidelines. If however it is by the Home Offices guidelines (who knows what they are?) then we could be in for troubling/fighting times ahead, particularly as anti-porn Blunkett is now at the HO's helm! When I say fighting times, I mean employing the Human Rights as a case for the Home Office to drop this! I made my points know to the Home Office in their consultation exercise on R18/importation etc that they held towards the end of last year, however the report on this exercise has not been published or is not finished. Does anyone out there know what is happening with this?
It makes me laugh (well really pis*ed off) when the british goverement can ban adult dvds yet there is so much sleaze inside the goverement its self, you only have to look at the last 2 tos*er`s archer and hamilton!

This section makes the existing offence of importing indecent or obscene articles a serious arrestable offence. Customs' enforcement of the prohibition on the importation of indecent and obscene material contained in s42 of the Customs Consolidation Act 1876 (CCA) has not changed. As a matter of policy they apply indecency only to photographic material featuring children under 16 years of age which reflects the domestic standards set out in the Protection of Children Act 1978 and the Criminal Justice Act 1988.
In terms of obscenity Customs are required to reflect the standards arising from contemporary court judgements when enforcing the prohibition. The type of material likely to be considered obscene includes bestiality, rape, fisting, urolagnia, defaecation, sado-masochism, bondage involving the use of a gag and children involved in any sexual activity.
The import prohibition contained in s42 CCA does not distinguish between child and adult material and it was not therefore possible to confine the serious arrestable offence classification only to indecent and obscene material featuring children and obscene adult material.
So it still looks like it's okay as long as you avoid bestiality, rape, fisting, urolagnia, defaecation, sado-masochism, bondage involving the use of a gag and children involved in any sexual activity.
YEs I just recently saw that article myself. I think the Home Office must be a bit surprised at how little media attention etc this change in governmental attitude has created. Good to see the UK heading in the right direction for a change but we still need to keep on eye on the Blunkett regime for a sudden change of heart.
