The answer to whether they will look better on an HDTV really comes down to how good your HDTV is at up-converting. If the TV does a better job than the DVD player, then it won't look better. However, the decent up-converting DVD players do a better job than most HDTV's do.
The cheap one are cheap because they are using chips that are available for a low price. However, those players are the ones that don't do a great job of up-converting. On the other hand, there are companies like Oppo, who for between $169 and $400, make up-converting DVD players that can produce pictures that can compete with the quality of Blu-ray discs. [Link] |

yes I keep hearing about Opo, but I'm not prepared to spend more than a 100 bucks right now for a dvd, I just got yesterday my 32 HD LCD SONY Bravia :) ....I'll wait a couple of weeks to get the opo then, thanks Bill! .....I use the Sony as a laptop monitor also and the dvds play with 30% better quality than in the regular dvd standalone. ...I hope the opo gets even better video quality.[Link] |

Costco has a philips 5992 up converting dvd player with hdmi for $49.99, which was on sale for $39.99 but it might be over as of yesterday. Ive heard it does a noticeable job of up converting, not even close to Oppo, but worth the $50. I dont have a 5992 myself, as I just got a 52" Samsung LCD tv just less than 2 weeks ago, and I just got a PS3 tonight at walmart to get the $100 gift card deal they have going. Ive heard the PS3 can up convert dvds, so i will check that out and see how good of a job it does.[Link] |

well, I couldn't wait for the sure thing and got the Toshiba upconverting dvd player SD 6100 and see no diference in the picture quality....the dvd looks better in the 32 lcd tv but I was expecting some noticeable change in the picture and that didn't happen.......someone tell me that the HDMI cable can be the problem, I got mine for 30 dollars from general Electric....but I don't think a 80 dollars HDMI cable is gonna help me.[Link] |

thanks Bill! ...you know what, I'm beginning to think that the problem with upconverting dvds is not the dvd player but the kind of (dvd) videos you play, I mean looks to me that porn videos are the problem (the way they are shoot and captured) if compared to hollywood (dvd) movies. ...I'm saying this 'cos all the great reviews I read in sites like Amazon, best buy about cheap upconvertings players ...I don't think those people are talking about their porn dvds when they say how great their dvds look in their new Toshiba, Philips, Pioneer (you name it)upconverting dvd player.[Link] |

Too late now, but I agree with Bill about the Oppo. At $400 for a DVD player, the new 983 is NOT cheap. I don't own one but it's getting very positive reveiws from 983 owners at AVS. The main reason people chose this unit is because it has an excellent video processor (which explains the steep price) and is able to convert standard DVDs to near HD quality. If you have a huge selection of SD DVDs, the Oppo would be the way to go. The unit is in such great demand that I think it's been backordered for quite a while now.[Link] |

The thing about upconverting (or anything like it) is this. All any technology like that can do is take what's already there and try to make it look better. You can't get something back that was never there to start with. Yes. Some DVDs may look much better with upconverting but it can't work miracles. Standard definition will never be high definition.
Think of it as buying better audio equipment with more resolving power. You're not going to notice much improvement on recordings that were never that great to start with. A good audio system can be a revelation with good recordings but all it will reveal with bad ones is how bad they are.[Link] |
