| Drew Black broken crankshaft 8011 Posts 9/99 | I just bumped up the max image width for image uploads to 1280px. Later tonight (9pm-ish East Coast USA time) I'll be rolling out new code to support responsive images in the forum. There may be a few hiccups as the transition is rolling out. Every forum post containing an image will be automatically edited, a process that could take a few hours to complete. During this period users might experience strange behavior editing posts that contain images. The new responsive image code will be aware of the user's screen size and give the browser a choice for which image resolutions it wants to fetch. At the moment every browser gets the full-sized image which is very inefficient for mobile users. And yes, I know this site sucks ass on a phone. We're working on it and this is a step in that direction. [Link] |

In my personal opinion, larger than 800px wide doesn't make for better quality topics or discussions. I think they tend to distract from the conversation by taking up much more screen space. We don't want ADT to be a destination where people come for photos or to review photos. The switch to 1280px max width brought some unintended consequences. To he honest I should have known better and been aware of what had already been going on for years right under our noses. Higher and higher resolution images tend to skew the conversation towards the photos. We don't want ADT to be a photography site or a place where people share high-quality images sourced from subscription-based websites. |
