My motherboard doesn't support the new standard so I figured that including a PCI USb 2.0 extension card will be the solution but even though Windows recognized the card, the added ports still work like USB 1.1. Could it be that only motherboards with a BIOS supporting USB 2.0 can benefit that spped ?

No, assuming the speed of the motherboard to be sufficient to support USB at all, it will support all flavors when such ports are added via a PCI slot.

You should look for the Adaptec <iAUA-3020 Duo Connect </i board (their part number: 1923200) - it offers 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 IEEE-1394 FireWire/iLink ports on the same board.

No, it should be independent of your motherboard. Are you plugging in devices to a USB 1.1 hub or using a 1.1 extension cable? Are the devices rated for USB 2.0? Are the devices truly capable of 2.0 speed (they can use a 2.0 interface but not be physically capable of utilizing the full speed...memory card readers are a good example since they are limited by the media transfer speed, not the USB speed)? How are you judging that they are working like 1.1? Does the card utilities allow you to select the speed?

Well I tried my USB 2.0 card reader to test the extension card and transferring a 100 Mb file takes awfully long for a USB 2.0 device.

okay a usb 2.0 card is not gonna be as fast as the one inegrated into the chipset.
as the tests show it only goes upto 50 percent of the rates speed.
u can check ur bandwidth by using a bandwidth monitor or windows 2k/xp built in network configuration utility.

USB is a serial device protocol. There are 4 different methods of data transfer over a USB connection. If everything in the path is USB2.0 compliant, the maximum data transfer is 480 megabits per second. However, note the word maximum - there are lots of things that can slow data transfer to a crawl.

A typical computer has 3 or 4 pairs of USB ports. Each pair shares a controller. If two devices are connected to a single controller, data transfer is slowed based on the devices' needs at the moment and their interaction on that channel. Depending on the types of devices and which of the 4 transfer methods they use, one device can cause the other to grind to a near halt or they can coexist peacefully. If one is a USB1.1 device and the other is a USB2.0 device, there is a high likelihood that they will share the channel at a maximum of 12 megabits per second - USB1.1 speeds - as the USB1.1 device can limit the speed of the channel.

Therefore, when connecting USB devices, try to use only 1 socket of each pair on your computer unless you know that the devices are similar in their speed and protocol needs.

For example, USB keyboards and mice share quite well. Data storage devices (e.g., flash memory cards, external hard drives, external optical drives) and webcams should each have their own channel. Printers and scanners can usually share quite well as it is unlikely that you would be printing and scanning simultaneously.

Another problem is not having enough USB connections. The solution here is to purchase a powered USB hub which contains active (multi-TT) circuitry aggregating USB signals such that there is no interference and hub-to/from-computer speed is maintained at USB2.0 levels. (See: USB Technology: Multi-TT Hub Goes Head-to-Head With Single-TT - Tom's Hardware Guide) The devices will still have to share USB2.0 data transfer speeds; but at least the data transfer speed to/from the computer will be maximized as compared with most inexpensive single-TT USB hubs where the hub-to/from-computer speed usually reverts to levels well below USB1.1 levels.

Ok thanks for the info guys. Looks like USB 2.0 and 1.1 don't mix well together.

Well Saki, I have a card reader for my digital camera and the fastest transfer I got so far was 12 Mb/s but as Gay Satyr stated, USB 2.0 can go up to 480 Mbps so there's no guarantee that you can reach that speed considering what devices are plugged on your PC.

That was my point: the memory card that you're using the 2.0 reader to read from may have a limitation on the read/write operation. Somewhere around 10-15Mbps is pretty typical for some digital camera media--this is a limitation of the media, not the USB card or computer.

It's like a highway: just because you can go really fast on an autobahn doesn't necessarily mean that your auto will be able to take advantage of the potential speed.

Actually, they mix very well if you are careful and obey the traffic laws (LOL, Saki, wish I'd thought of that). However, just because the Autobahn speeds are geared for Porsches doesn't mean that your camera memory card VW Beetle gets a new engine. It just gets to use the slow lanes. A USB1.1 compliant device is still USB1.1 even if attached to a USB2.0 controller.

As long as you mix and match devices, connections, and channels with a little thought as to the processes involved, USB1.1 and USB2.0 coexist beautifully and you get the advantage of both.

What are the brands and models of the USB card, the card reader, and the flash memory card you are using? Maybe I can confirm their ratings.

My USB 2.0 card is a cheap brandless card but with a NEC chipset so I guess it's good quality. I plugged a Sandisk memory stick card reader on it and that's the only device plugged on the card.

The NEC USB2.0 chipset is probably the most popular for add-on USB2.0 for PCI cards and for motherboards where USB2.0 is not implemented in the system chipset itself so you should be okay there.

SanDisk is a reputable company making a variety of flash memory products and associated devices so you should be okay there, also. However, note that SanDisk has models of card readers that are USB1.1 and models that are USB2.0 - make sure you got what you thought you did.

Flash memory cards come in a wide variety of speeds as well. Many of the "standard issue" cards are relatively slow compared to some of the "specialty" cards. As Saki pointed out in an earlier post in this thread, this may be your limiting factor.

Well I got the USB 2.0 reader so it must be an issue with the digital camera card so I won't know if I have USB 2.0 till I test another USB high speed device.
