Looking back, I was probably a little too negative in my words on B. Skow. I'm watching Hanna's House and it is pretty awesome. Not everything he's done has been "bad" and if he does more stuff like Hanna's house I'll be a fan!

I agree with this too - It would be good if Vivid released trailers for movies before they are released. Also, it would be great if Vivid considered making their trailers hardcore.

^I'm not a tech guy, so this is going to be very rough and will require someone with true know-how to help, but...generally...
You're going to need to put the trailers in a format that the iPod, etc. can read (i.e., a ".mp4" extension file -- "MPEG-4 Movie" format -- this is the one that the Jules Jordan trailers download as). There are programs that can convert various video file types (i.e., ".wmv", etc.) to this format, but I can't recommend one to you -- I have a couple, but they wouldn't be good for bulk purposes.
At this point, the files are going to have to be made available.
Jules Jordan, Evil Angel, and Digital Playground have an actual podcast feed (from the internet) that can be subscribed to from inside the "iTunes" program (which is the program that is used as an interface between iPods, etc. and PCs). I have no idea how one would go about setting up such an internet-based podcast feed -- this would be for the tech guys. With such a feed, people could just automatically receive your podcasts (your trailers) in their iTunes Library (all of the music, videos, etc. that they have available for their iPods), as the trailers / podcasts become available. They could also, with ease, just go in and manually download whatever podcasts / trailers are missing. This option would bring your newest podcast / trailer directly to the consumer at his / her home every time he / she opens iTunes...if he / she has iTunes set up that way (which many--most?--people do).
Another option would be some variation of a much more low-tech means of making the podcasts / trailers available. They could be put up on a site (i.e., Vivid's site) and then just directly and manually downloaded (in the iPod, etc. format) by the interested parties (i.e., consumers, etc.)--if via nothing more than a right-click, "save link as" option. This would be easier from the technical side, but it would be far less fancy...and I am guessing far less penetrating in terms of the numbers of people who would be reached. The consumers, etc. would have to actively seek out your trailers...as opposed to the one-time podcast feed setup that they would have to do with the prior, more fancy option.
Here is a link to how Digital Playground gets people to sign up for their podcast / trailer feed:
Digital Playground podcast feed page
Down at the very bottom right of this page is where one signs up for DP's trailers as podcasts...
*As I stated, I'm not a tech guy...so this is pretty rough and rudimentary...but it will give you some idea of what I am talking about. In principle, this should be pretty easy for your tech people.

One complaint I have about vivid is the water down sex scenes. Its great for movies with plot.
And the lack of quality gonzo titles.
I mean look;
i keep vivid in my store for the women customers.
For plot i tell them I have wicked videos but if im low on titles i suggest vivid.
Im not trying to be rude I spent the better half of my teen/early 20's "watching" your movies. Its just that vivid has sucked for so long (im sorry for the wording) that it may never recover.
Take a few notes from Digital Playground and find some talent thats almost unknown. The take a page from Elegant Angel and start making the porn that made vivid such a huge name.
Im glad to see that ya all are trying to fix it at least.
Good luck.

Thanks for your comments.
I think if you look at the newer stuff by B Skow you won't see any watered down sex.
Vivid is actually recovering very well. A lot of people on here who have long abandoned Vivid have been posting great reviews of titles like The Pinch and Hannas House. The new Raylene movie is 5 stars.
We are not a gonzo company, so there will be a lack of anything gonzo. We just don't really make it.
Right now we are producing quality sex titles with a very thin story. It's funny that you mention we should take a page from Digital and Wicked, when they started they all took many pages from Vivid, not to say they all aren't great companies, they are.
Here are some reviews by customers, that I believe I posted before, but you may not have seen them.
These reviews are from Gamelink. They are from regular customers, not professional reviewers,and taken from VOD and DVD. I think this shows that people who are watching Vivid movies are really happy with them.
These are reviews for 15 movies, so there is consistency.

I'm seeing some names I don't recognize as contract stars in your films Hollywood. Who are all the girls Vivid now has featured on their roster? Gotta admit the star usually is the deciding factor when it comes down to me buying. I know Cassidey and Janine are long gone, well Janine given her status outside I'm not so sure about, but other than Monique and Savanna, I have no idea. Is Raylene signed?

IMO not a very strong roster. In the past (up until mid-2005) Vivid stood out from the all the other porn companies because of Drop Dead Georgous contract girls. And although all of their current girls are Lookers, they don't hit me as DDG.
And, yes, Vivid's product is more hardcore than in previous years. Which makes Vivid currently more like the other top porn production companies; Digital Playground, Wicked, Adam & Eve. Right now the porn-pack is all very "tight," with no "stand out" company.

I got this email yesterday;
JS81 has this to say:
Hey man,
Sorry this is coming through as email. I couldn't figure out how to send a private message, lol. I just wanted to say that I've been watching Vivid features for a long time. I'm a fan of the older stuff from the 80s and early 90s. I have all the Bad Girls movies, lol. I was wondering if Vivid still edits stuff for time on re-releases of some of these older films? I know a lot of movies were cut to 70 minutes on VHS. I even called Vivid once to complain and was basically told they were doing it to save money. Is this still the case? I eventually resorted to Ebay and old video stores to find first release VHS copies of some of these older titles. I have found most everything I was looking for. Anyway, just wanted to share.
Take care,
Here is Steven Hirsch' reply;
Do not cut for time. Haven't in 5 yrs

The problem is being able to determine which of the "classic" titles have been cut for time and which haven't. Unless Vivid went back and reissued the uncut version of the titles that they did cut, which doesn't appear to be the case, it's virtually impossible to determine whether the "classic" title that you want to buy has been cut or not.

Vivid are still good quality wise but I think that they went off in a different direction for a few years which dis-illusioned some people but recently I have to say I am quite happy with them. Still prefer Wicked though.

I think the newer Vivid stuff is better. The lighting is better, the sex scenes are more explicit but not over the top (pretty much my taste), and I think the current group of stars Hannah Hilton, Meggan Malone, Raylene, and Nikki Jayne all compare very well to past Vivid girls, Nikki Jayne especially. Though I have to say, On the Couch didn't do it for me. Her debut move with Vivid was terrific though, Very much in the tradition of I can't believe girls who look like that are doing that onscreen. The Meggan Malone-Hanna Hilton movies are all quite good.

You misunderstood me. My point is that the answer that "Vivid hasn't done this in 5 years" doesn't really help people who are interested in purchasing a "classic" title on DVD because they wouldn't know if it's an edited title or not, until after they have purchased it.

Well that is very good to hear. Gotta admit it was one of my gripes in the 80's and 90's. I have seen some otherwise great footage left out of the studio and left in the behind-the-scenes in some earlier 2000 films. I have never been particularly crazy about the way Vivid generally edits their films though. Too choppy for my tastes, although not as much so with B. Skow.

I have a question: With DVD technology and the ability to skip from "chapter" to chapter on a whim, why would porn companies take the time to edit out parts of sex scenes? It is true that it can often be sexy to add the style of quickly cutting to different parts of a scene (i.e. cutting straight from a blowjob to fucking rather than showing the performers get into position without cutting) BUT, we all can do that at home as we please by hitting "next" or whatever on our DVD controller. I would reallyt rather all directors and companies just let scenes go on naturally without saying "cut" or editing out parts. I would rather things stay as close to one cohesive scene rather than a series of sex acts clipped together.
Obviously Vivid is far from the only company to do this. But I must say that I can't count the number of scenes I've watched over the years from Vivid where I was *really* into the scene and felt the scene was almost ruined by the amount of editing/cutting/skipping around from one part of the scene to the next. There seems to have been quite a bit of improvement from Vivid in this regard over the years. Hopefully it will continue!

I believe that it was initially done back in the days of VHS, when a Vivid title went from being a "new release" to a "catalog" title. Back then, some reasons for doing this would have been to save money on video tape stock and replication costs.
However, it never made sense to me that the "catalog" versions of the titles were used when creating DVD copies of the same movies.
As for movies where scenes were edited into "multi-angle" scenes, that just appears to be a case of using a new technology "because they can" rather than "because they should". This type of thinking is very common amongst some computer programmers. I've known programmers where you can bet your bottom dollar that, right after they learn something new, they will use that new knowledge in the next program that they write, whether it's appropriate or not.

Well you won't get much argument from me. I've always understood that some editing would be done and would need to be done though. I had a director tells me years ago that a lot of scenes simply aren't filmed in a continuous manner. Breaks happen for various reasons, leaving editing as a must. I know companies used to edit for cable tv too. I can live with that, it's just the edits that seem unnecessary or happen for no reason that drives me crazy. I'd like to believe you can edit and still keep some continuation.

I don't think that the fact that you stopped bothers anyone. The problem is being able to identify which titles have been edited and which ones haven't been, before purchasing it. When buying a Vivid classic title, people are taking a chance on whether they are buying an edited title or not. That's not only a problem for the edited titles, but also a problem for the unedited titles because people might not be willing to take that chance.
Is there any way to get a list of the Vivid DVD's that were made from the edited version of the movies? If this were available, people would be able to buy with the knowledge of what they will be getting.

I dont' think that it's that simple.
The copyright date will be the date that the movie was made, not the date that the DVD came out. With "classics", some titles were released on VHS (for sake of discussion, lets say in 2001), then edited on VHS for catalog and then released on DVD prior to 2004 (edited). However, other movies that were also shot in 2001, edited for VHS catalog, but released on DVD after 2004, would be unedited. I don't believe that there is any way for the average consumer to know when either of these titles was released on DVD. They just know that it was initially produced/copyrighted in 2001.

Kimberley's stuff is really unique and twisted and great. It's the single best thing Vivid does. It's porn even people I know who hate porn would kinda dig because it's tuned into a different frequency. Very FEMALE and very artsy and juicy and dirty but w/an angle that sets it apart. It's as close to what I would do if I made porn as anything else, though I don't think it's all about getting dudes to ejaculate as it is about a pervasive mood of sexuality. There's tons of stuff you can jack off, too ... KK's stuff gets weirdly under your skin. And especially your eyeballs.

Lanny was one of my all time favorite Vivid girls. She was so much fun to shoot and hang around with on set. Lanny had the sexiest accent and she is the one who gave me my director name B Skow. The name came from the way Lanny would pronounce my real last name. When I first started directing for Vivid 4 years ago the girls were used to shooting 15 minute sex scenes and when I shot them I would make them shoot much harder and longer scenes. When I would shoot Lanny she would say "I hate you B Skow" joking around because she knew I would push her.

Thank you guys for your feedback. I hope to come on here more often and listen to your comments. I spent about two hours on here last night reading all kinds of great stuff. I am a huge fan of porn and have been watching it for about 25 years. I have been in this Business for 17 years, but I was a photographer for the first 13 years and started directing for Vivid about 4 or 5 years ago. I look forward to talking with everyone.
