| TonyC Comstock Films 2523 Posts 8/03 | Posted - Sep 10 2004 : 10:12AM At the other end of the spectrum is something like Bruce Brown's masterpiece "Endless Summer" Although it is explicitly about surfing, and contains a wealth of exotic surfing footage, Brown captures surfing in a way that made it interesting and exciting to surfer and nonsurfers alike. IRCC, the film showed to paying audiences for over a year in Kansas City. You could call it the ultimate gonzo surf movie By contrast, "Big Wednesday" is equivalent to the fantasy of a full-fledged Hollywood movie with hardcore sex sequences. "Big Wednesday" has all the things we expect from a "real movie", but also has some very nice surfing sequences. But compared to "Endless Summer", "Big Wednesday's" appeal is less transcendent. It's not quite a good Hollywood movie, but there's not enough surfing to make it a good surf movie (20 years later "In God's Hands" was much, much worse.) OTOH, "Endless Summer" still turns people on, and gets them excited, whether they are grey-haired vets like me, fully stoke groms, or mid-westerns who've never seen the ocean. -T.C. [Link] |
