Bad transfers are annoying and unprofessional. I've got a couple of DVDs where the transfer was done using a home DVD recorder and VCR linked together. You can tell from the recorder on-screen menus that are captured at the start and not edited out. In places the quality is really terrible, as if it isn't even from a mint condition VHS copy. I guess I should be thankful that old videos are available at all, but when you're spending a fair amount of money you expect something a little better. I put more effort into transferring my old home movies.

It really depends on how and why it's done. Random camera angles and cuts can make a scene far more interesting and realistic. Usually, background music is horrible and too loud. But sometimes it's tasteful, appropriate and done just right. Distortion usually doesn't add anything but it can if it isn't overdone. The problem is that a lot of attempts to make artistic porn are made by people who don't have any talent for it. And it shows. When it's done right, it can be nice.
