The user mapofhawaii posted a thread here about how the porn has gotten so much better since the olden days, I personally happen to agree. But porn is in itself so many moving parts. Now we have VR, AR, mobile and the list is only going to keep growing. The industry looks ahead often but it's typically left to sites like AdultDVDTalk and the occasional Netflix documentary to take an introspective. That is after all how I found this site in the first place, out of curiosity. With technology comes all these other shiny new things as well. But what you don't see talked about often is the representation of the adult industry in gaming. Sex is play, so what the hell is going on?
There's a disconnect, a fragmentation. Considering the overall games industry is a 80+ billion dollar mammoth I find it amazing that the adult games industry hasn't ventured much outside of 3D sex-simulation games and visual novels. There's also the problem of mainstream adoption. You somehow need to make an adult game, with mainstream adoption. Or at least meet halfway. So again, let's do what's important and look back toward the beginning. There was Softporn Adventure, then Leisure Suit Larry, then it gets bumpy. Lula, the Playboy games..
So what's happened? I'll save you some time here and get to the point. Information, humor and history. That's how you get people to open up to this stuff. You call it a documentary about sex and put it on the History channel and you might get away with nudity. So make a game representative of all the quirkiness of the adult industry and toss in a little history, why not? The hentai kids, the oldheads, the millennials, we all watch porn. Have a lil something for everyone. That's how I'd describe porn to an alien, as a little something for everyone. I hope I posted this in the right place, thanks!

My personal opinion... Adult video games are very time consuming to produce. Not to mention the people to hire? The cost? Majority of the people just go for the scene with a women they like watch for a few mins and go to the cum scene. Hentai video games.. Japanese style games are huge in japan but only selective few makes it to the state. Then again you could have a loyal fan base to help support you like a kickstarter.
The best game i think everyone would enjoy (i recommend to you Hurvey) and have different taste for have to be "Akabur Princess Trainer [Aladdin disney fans] Or recently released "Hermione trainer" For Harry potter fans. Its very time consuming though so warning!
My personal favorite have to be Akabur's Magic Shop since most are the scenes are animated. Its a combination of comedy, sex, and a little bit on the dark side. Lot of indy company are producing these nowadays and getting paid by Patreon fans (Similar to kickstarter). The sad thing is.. it usually take 6 months or longer to produce. If there ever a future for adult video games make it into the mainstream market. I hope these artist are hired.

Difficult to produce and big players in the game industry such as Sony Playstation,Microsoft Xbox plattforms make it difficult to sell these types of games.Same goes for Apple and Googles phone plattforms and also PC games selling plattforms such as Steam. There is definetly potential but if games console manufacturer and big players in the games industry make it difficult to publish these games on their systems and hardware then its difficult to sell them and find enough customers and make good money.
Games with violence are accepted and parents for example don't riot against that.Make games with excessive sex and nudity and there will be calls to ban the game.Thats the misguided double-standard of our society when heavy violence is more accepted and welcome in our games and mainstream films than a natural process such as sexuality.
Virtual Reality might change that as it can be more immersive if more interaction is possible and games are best suited to give the consumer interaction with a different reality. But that could take decades still.Virtual Reality will suceed in games earlier I can imagine but to change the double-standard with regards to sexualized games it could take some time.
There is some increased nudity and adult themes in modern big blockbuster games such as Witcher 3,GTA 5 and Mass Effect 2.You can interact with romantic interests and that might lead to a short cut scene with adult content or in GTA 5 you can visit strip clubs and get a personal service from nude dancers and in Witcher 3 you can do both in a fantasy setting(check youtube to have a preview). The developers are getting increasingly confident in implementing adult themes in big games and the feedback is always positive and they will feel more encouraged in going more in this direction in the future.

pornography wasn't sex but fantasies of an impossibly hospitable world

I think to say porn games in Japan are 'huge' is a bit of a misnomer. They are very much superniche games there and the market is shrinking rapidly so the games are very, very cheapy produced.
There were a handful (hur hur) of more ambitious games early on in the genre and I've heard good things about Dramatical Murder but it seems to be mostly lolicon, fanservice and substandard hentai now.
One major exception is the excellent Japanese game Catherine, which is available on the PS3. Not porn but definitely adult and kinky.
Even more promising are the Western indie developers influenced by the Visual Novels and dating sims. Cara Ellison did a series on sex and games for Rock, Paper, Shotgun that include links to demos and free games well worth checking out Some are straight, some gay and some are just insane.
In particular I'd recommend the demo for VA-11 HALL-A and the completely bizarre but brillant Fuck Everything. If someone can expand on these and get them onto Steam we might be able to get somewhere.
