A new member with just one post replied to a comment I made with a quote and it looks like what the reply was was blocked as it now just says [link removed: no link shorteners]

Here's the post if anyone wants to see it: Bryan Gozzling - Evil Angel + Hookup Hotshot

What's a link shortener? Why would someone use it? What's it do? Why are they forbidden? Keep in mind that I'd still use a rotary dial phone if they worked so there's not a hint of sarcasm in these questions.

Thanks!

Our local phone system finally disabled rotary-dial features about 2 years ago.

Link shorteners take a long URL and turn it into very short one. They obfuscate the destination URL. This is a problem for us. I have some automated systems running in the background in the forum that will go out and verify that all outbound links are still working, and that they are not in any of the malware distribution blacklists. You might be surprised how many former porn stars had their own websites, left the biz, lost their domain name and someone scooped it up to distribute malware. And there were links to these types of sites buried in old posts.

^ Thanks Drew. I take it that the underlying purpose of weeding these shortened links is to protect those of us clicking on them? Thanks for having our backs.

If you're curious, I'm using the Google Safe Browsing API for these checks.

I also check for other things like unexpected redirects. Sometimes bad guys will buy/acquire an expired domain name and redirect it to a new site.

It's only "good" for social media like twitter, if it's on forums that allow html/hyperlinks then it's most definitely spam.

Be well

A lot of the link-shortened URLs tend to be spam or affiliate links.

This discussion reminds me that maybe I should implement an outbound interstitial page. Chaturbate has a nice page when you click a link that takes you away from the site. It says something to the effect of "You are being directed to www.somesitename.com in 15 seconds" and the timer counts down. You can click the "www.somesitename.com" part of the message if you don't want to wait. I happen to like these things because they give you a chance to think "do I really want to go there?"

Thank God you're running the tech side here! I'll stick with my areas of expertise such as anal sex and gaping scenes!
