This has come up on a few threads and I think is an interesting question.
On the Mason thread HardX confirmed that the much requested by ADTers facial series is not a big money maker.
Jay Sin posted a while ago that his prolapsing g/g anal series is far outsold by his TS stuff.
On Adultempire.com their top VOD titles include two Emma Marx features from New Sensations Romance line, a Kevin Moore Stepmom video, Aftermath an Armstrong Wicked feature, a Riley Reid POV clip, a Silvera TS video, HardX Supercute video, a Digital Sin incest video and a 'Young and Juicy' EA comp.
Their DVD best sellers include Emma Marx again, a load of Blacked, the latest JJV Black Owned, EA's Hard Reign and Digital Sin's He's in Charge.
Those who actually pay for their porn probably have different tastes to the majority who are stealing it but interesting nonetheless.
What do y'all think? How representative is the list above? Why the contrast with a lot of ADTers? Particularly surprised to see only one Evil Angel title and a TS one at that, although I had heard that Joey's videos sell like gangbusters.

I seriously doubt this site is the best way to gauge what's popular/what sells the most in porn.
Best sellers list and stuff like that on sites like Adultempire is probably more representative than ADT.

I am interested in finding out this information, too. Those Pornhub data collections get passed around media source with headlines claiming that "this is what people watch," and "this is how long they watch for," when in reality this is what people steal, check out like a preview, explore, or otherwise watch in very particular contexts. For example, when they make claims that it's oh-so-surprising and funny that [insert conservative state] watches "the most" porn, in reality this says a lot more about who watches brief snippets of explicit media on tube sites. It makes perfect sense to me that the more conservative and religious states will access their porn quickly, secretly, and illegally, with no paper trail.
Regardless, I wish we could get box office and sales figures for all websites and companies. Thank goodness for the informal reporting here on ADT.

2 points =
1 - Masons core product and customer base seems to be based on quality pasionate sex (rather than speciality acts like facials) so its kinda understandeable that the detour into facials has underperformed. Most facial fans just dont associate Mason with facials and have other sites that consistently produce the product they want. Maybe if Mason persevered with facials and invested long term in producing a good facial product then the mass audience would find it.
2 - Adultempire.com only offers a limited choice - my personal experience suggests that very few people actually buy dvds these days and the choice of vod that they offer is very limited so its not a true reflection of what people are watching overall.
I mean theres no reflection of subscription sites.
yeh so i dont know whats selling best but the fact that mason isnt seeling facial vids dosnt indicate a general uncommerciality of facial movies and sales figures of places like Adultempire.com only tell a small part of the story and if you only consider those figures in isolation you will have a wrong impression.
Lots of people are subscibing to putalocura , brazilian facials etc etc and watching vod at ggg etc.

I think Mason was talking about her Massive Facials series , I love her work , a lot, but never bought one of those , nor any Feeding Frenzy or anything related to those.
TS are completely out of my radar and I'm fine this way
I like passionate sex , I prefer one on one , but depending on the girl some crowded sex is also welcomed

You have two stores stating that list that ADE has (YourChoice said it matches their list) is correct. And while yes, stores sell a limited selection, generally stores pick the selection to be that which sells the best since most stores are in business to make money and selling what is the most popular is the best way to actually make money. If you choose to check such things I believe that places like XRent and Adult CD Movies also have top selling lists. Something most people don't recognize here is that the members of Adult DVD Talk are not the standard adult movie buying audience so because something gets talked about a lot here has no correlation to what sells best in general. However, you are free to your opinions and if you believe that they don't tell the right story on sales then feel free to believe that.

Certainly it would be good to see info from other sites like hotmovies.com and moviemonster. Hotmovies doesn't seem to have a Best-selling list that I could find just a broad and unorganized 'Popular' category.
I agree about DVD and blu sales but find that adultempire actually has a very good selection on VOD, it just takes a while for certain companies material to appear there because of course they would rather sell it via their site first.
I think the comments of von Swine and that JJV took three years to make another FF speaks to the commercial viabilty of that niche taste. If it made money I don't see why they wouldn't be producing it.
It would be great to get an idea from the big sites about what sells. Judging from Brazzers product is seems most vanilla sex is still most popular. As GGG says that's why the informal reporting on ADT from those actually in the industry is so valuable.
As for the tubesites, I agree a lot of the reporting and conclusions drawn from that are sloppy.
As I believe I mentioned elsewhere I noticed that some anti-porners were using how apparently popular 'incest' porn was on the tube sites in a typical attack against porn.
Of course they didn't distinguish this is actually all fantasy not actual incest but they also didn't seem to notice that a lot of the porn tagged as such on these sites are actually just vanilla scenes with no actual incest roleplay at all.
Clips are often inaccurately tagged in this way, sometimes playing up how 'rough' a scene is that is actually quite conventional or tame.
I suspect this is done by some of the uploaders to attract attention to the clip but it also seems to be part of a general attempt at camouflage so that the studios reviewing the sites for their clips can't find them through searching the appropriate tage, name of their company or the performer's name will find it.

Generally I consider the tubesite data to be useless. Even if the data is 100 percent accurate, all it tells you is what the people who aren't paying for adult material are viewing. Until there is a way to make money off people who don't pay for their adult material, what the people who steal it consume pays no bills and produces no new content. It is what people are paying for that generates new content. One can not state that there is a direct correlation between the data of what is stolen and what makes money.

^ True. It can suggest preferences, though. Yet even then, who knows why people are searching particular things? Searching for porn has its own language, too, that yields particular set ups or sex acts and does not necessarily indicate body preference or anything else.

^ Yeah, I think one reason people search for things with an incest vibe ("Mom bangs son" for example) is that they are into older women, not into the incest aspect.

^ Good point, I believe it was Dines who made a big deal out of the use of gagging and choking as a popular term for some scenes and it was pointed out here that often scene with those terms are not actually that aggressive or even have any actual choking, etc in them.
Someone looking at those clips could just be looking for a BJ scene.
So often porn consumers have to sort the wheat from the chaff to find what turns them on.

Or it could just suggest what people search for when cost doesn't matter since it is free. For instance. I will get very different books from the library than I will go purchase. Now I know that example doesn't work quite right because the library paid for the book. The point I am making though is what interests me when it is a free rental from the local library is very different from what I am will to purchase for myself. If I were going to determine what books sold the best I would be more likely to use the data set from Barnes & Noble than the [insert name] county library.

Somewhat related, I find it amusing that Mandingo Massacre is one of the more tender porn series. Not much massacring going on.

Good point Flash. I find it interesting that the DVD list on Adultempire is overwhelmingly dominated by Blacked. Seems that those who do buy physical are concerned more by quality than those who are grabbing it for 'free.' The few features being produced these days also perform better on VOD than I would have expected.
It has been a while since I visited a torrent site but as I recall the top 'shared' files were all recent scenes from Brazzers, Bangbros, etc.

@ Flash - Well theres a significant section of porn watchers who are unrepresented in the feedback obtained from ADE and Jacco.
That is people who subscribe the plethora of subscription sites that host their own content.
How large that sector is idk but it must be big.
You can say that the feedback from ADE/jacco is representative of their customer base but we cant tell how far their customer base is representative of porn consumers as a whole.
Id be interested to know how bangbros turnover compared to ADE turnover and how Bangbros subscribers compared numerically with putalocara subscibers .
Im guessing putalocura would be relatively small.

Well according to Xrent, overall the best selling stuff seems to be IR and lesbian themed movies, particularly Blacked and GirlfriendFilms titles. That could always have to do with sponsorship or endorsements or promos, but overall there's lots of IR from not just Blacked either, but JulesJordan, DarkX, Evil Angel, New Sensations, Dogfart, Bangbros, etc.
Granted it is only one of many vendors, but I check it out every now and then along with AdultDVDEmpire
Good point about the Bible belt.

There's a video on YouTube titled "The Porn Identity" in which Angela White is interviewed. She says explicitly that a lot of her site's members come from the deep South and the Bible Belt. Obviously the example of one website isn't enough, but I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the possibility that other people in those states are also paying for porn.

People who buy DVD's want quality (what a surprise) so indeed Blacked, Marc Dorcel and other A-list studios sell the most.
We do not only sell DVD's, but we also produce and I am quite familiar with websites too (I visit a lot of tradeshows and talk with my colleagues). Overall the best selling porn in what on ADT is usually called "vanilla porn".
The average ADT-er is part of a vocal but small minority and in no way representative for the average porn consumer.
We've been in the business for over 28 years, me personally for over 12 years and datamining is one of the things I love doing. And I have access to a lot of data.

And vanilla sex primarily featuring girls with large fake tits, at that. And filmed with vignette-style setups rather than simply wall-to-wall sex. That's about as far from "ADT consensus" as it gets.
Not that any of this is a huge surprise; people who prefer mainstream porn that's easily available both online and on DVD are unlikely to be posting about their preferences on a forum.

Just out of curiosity, how do you expect to work these inconsistent data sets to come up with your proper figures? And how are you going to compensate for comparing generalized figures with niche figures? They aren't directly comparable. Sites like Putalocara are niche sites. Sites like Adult DVD Empire are generalized sites. How can you compare Adult DVD Empire with Bangbros? A safe assumption is that a Bangbros subscriber will not be buying VOD access to Bangbros material on Adult DVD Empire, but could be purchasing their DVDs. How do you plan on rectifying this data? The only way I can see that you can get the closest to the data that is actually being looked for is by taking the averages of generalized stores (like Adult DVD Empire, Your Choice, X Rent DVD, AEBN, etc) or by actually finding a large pool of "average" adult entertainment purchasers (not members here, as both I and Jacco have stated, here does not represent your average shopper) and finding out their purchasing over time. Since the latter is probably going to be damn near impossible (where would you get your average sampling group) that leaves you with limited options.

^ The point of first comparing relative significance of bangbros vs ADE was just to guage the relative significance of the 2 types of porn delivery in the market place. Like if ADE was overwhelmingly larger then it would lend weight to giving the ADE feedback more credence. Whereas if ADE was relatively small it would suggest we give it less credence to ADE type marteters and more attention to direct hosting sites like bangbros.
Site traffic for february 2016 we get the following -
Bangbros.com 9.80M
Adultdvdempire.com 4.30M
So Bangbros gets 2x trafficwise. So that indicates that direct traffic to sites are at least as equally significant commercial interface as general type dvd/vod marketplaces.
So if we accept that places like ADE only offer a limited choice - to get a more complete idea we need to look at traffic/turnover of unrepresented sites.
Brazzers.com 36M
Legalporno.com 8.40M
Blacked.com 4.70M
Evilangel.com 3.80M
tvgirls.com 3.30M
Putalocura.com 1.60M
Jamesdeen.com 241.40K
Gloryholeswallow.com 435.40K
Rodneymoore.com 146.10K
Trenchcoatx 121.10K
DarkX.com 506.40K
Girlfriendsfilms.com 183.50K
Welivetogether.com 255.10K
Yourchoice.co.uk 17.40K
So Brazzers is biggest. How do we classify Brazzers ? Vannilla ? idk as ive never been to Brazzers.
But anyway Putalocara at 1.6M is a big player.
Im not saying i have the definitive answer im just saying that places like ADE probably cater to a vanilla type audience and if you soley go by their figures you will get a skewed impression that discounts the significant presence of sites like putalocura etc etc.

Don't see how Silvera's TS titles qualify as 'vanilla.' Or IR, incest play or S&M, all things featured in ADE's lists.
I think we all agree that ADE taken in isolation doesn't tell us everything but the range of titles suggests a wider range of viewers than you'd get from Brazzers or Puta Locura whose product is actually very vanilla, even compared to the light S&M of the Emma Marx series. Brazzer's rep as the 'McDonalds of Porn' is well earned.
Your definition of 'vanilla' seems arbitrary and mysterious.
How do the standard POV scenes on Puta Locura not qualify as vanilla? Because he has some anal? I hardly think just anal makes something not vanilla these days, Vivid and Wicked have anal sex in their productions, usually the supposed standard of 'vanilla' porn.
Also don't see how Puta Locura qualifies as a 'major player' but ADE doesn't when ADE has almost 4 times more traffic.

Those numbers don't make any sense , for example Brazzers is a network of sites, what is that sells better ? Doctor's Adventure? Big Tits at Sports?
Other sites you mentioned are also a network for example Dark X is linked with Hard X and Erotica X yet you chose only one of them , furthermore I've never seen any Legal Porno DVD here nor any from Puta Locura whereas there are from Blacked , Hard X , Kink, Bangbros or Rocco, mind you I live in Europe and DVDs from LP or PL aren't available even here , or at least non where I live, though admittedly it's not my stuff I didn't look for them

Ben you completely bypassed AEBN in my post, which is the VOD model and has videos that are decidedly not "vanilla," yet when you look at its most watched, it tells a similar tale to other stores with broad options.
Again I don't know how you plan to use data from two very different type sources. I am going to assume you have never actually had to work with different type data set before. Mixing the data from Adult DVD Empire (or AEBN) with a place like Brazzers or BangBros would be like mixing data from Kroger and the J.J. Nissen factory outlet for the buying of bread.
Which is what you are doing when you look at the data set from Brazzers or BangBros. Hey look, everyone at Brazzers bought Brazzers.

Also mere traffic doesn't tell us who is actually spending money. Brazzers may be getting lots of visits but then many of those viewers could (and I suspect are) then be heading over to the tube and torrent sites to actually get the scenes.
For example when I googled Putalocura to confirm which site it was the first page was filled with tube and torrent sites.

@ Flash - Well that is kinda my point - the vairiedness of the market place makes it impossible to collate all the data in a onesizefitzall way to give a comprehensive and accurate impression.
But you are right Flash the general distributors do give a general ball park idea - you just need to sprinkle the putlaocara and other sites on the top yourself. After all sites like putalocura are quite big players.

Comparing the traffic numbers of web subscription sites with those of DVD/VOD stores seems pretty silly to begin with. The usage patterns are completely different. The drip-feed style of releasing scenes on the likes of Brazzers and BangBros makes frequent (potentially daily) visits much more likely than a storefront does, yet (as you say) the storefront probably generates a lot more revenue per visit.

Traffic means nothing, I know a site that does 8 signups per million visitors and they are happy and surviving with that! We would be bankrupt in weeks with numbers like that.
Besides thirdparty traffic stats are always wrong. I know what traffic I have and it's not the number mentioned above, by a very large factor.
AEBN and Hotmovies are the two largest VOD sites, both with a very large selection. Look at their bestsellers.
