heard this somewhere
monogamy is a gift offered to show you love someone...
so basically if you keep the reciept you're free and clear... Lmao
truthfully though.. Alot of men also cheat because it's a way to stave off mortality. Men don't deal with their own deaths well and so they sleep around driven by a need to propegate themselves... Alot of it taking place on a subconscious level
i think commitment phobia is an extension of this.
Either way though there's a myriad of reasons all as unique as the person being unfaithful... So basically love like there's no tomorrow!

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but a lifetime of observation leads me to believe that a person cheats because the other person makes them feel better about themselves. Sometimes this is because their chosen partner is indifferent, or is possibly outright hostile. Other times, it's because the "cheater" cannot be content with less than constant attention. Insecurity, ego and just plain lonliness are all contributing factors.

I am speaking from my own experiences here: I have dated men who cheated on me and I just think it was in their nature because they cheated on other women after me so it wasnt me who made them cheat. They were just losers.
I have been happily married for 13 years now and we have the best marriage anyone could ever have. we respect each other, love each other, trust each other, enjoy each other, have lots of sex and want no other.
I try my best not to bitch about stuff because the last thing a man wants to hear when he comes home from work is bitching.

I have currently gone 2 whole years without cheating on my boyfriend. This is a personal record that I intend to continue. I will break up with him before I cheat on him again.
I cheated in every relationship I was ever in. That includes relationships I had permission to fool around in, I still kept secrets and did things I knew were out of bounds. It wasn't because it was "in my nature" or because I "couldn't control my urges". I did it because I could and it felt good to get attention and do whatever I wanted - and because I either didn't care if I hurt someone, or because I didn't think I was going to hurt anyone, or because I thought I was so smart I could hide it perfectly. Guess what? I wasn't so smart and I hurt a lot of people.
I made a lot of excuses over the years. My husband ignored me and left me home alone with boring housework and little babies for 9 years... My boyfriend(s) wouldn't be clear on what they wanted or what they were offering and they weren't around every second I wanted attention... It was just work... You name it, I told it to myself and anyone else that would listen. It was just excuses.
I cheated because I felt like it and it was easy, because I was a selfish horrible person.

^Completely understand the above post and can totally relate to it, the only thing I would add is that It is far more rewarding to be monogamous, all those shity feelings disappear and you gain a greater self respect over time. Lying and cheating day after day is draining and stressful to breaking point, life is much better without all that baggage,,,,oh and porn helps too, well for some of us that is.

Isn't membership in this forum proof enough, that men feel the urge to cheat on their partner. I mean, we are practically prowling for fresh virtual pussy here, aren't we?

Wise observation!!! Nobody here has actually defined what they call "cheating" though. Fucking somebody else? Is that really "cheating?"
I guess that depends upon the perameters of the relationship.
I have been down this road a few times on both ends. One "being cheated on" and the other "cheating on." However I don't feel I actually "cheated on." Her words were like this....
"It's not that you fucked her, it is the way you talk with her."
And keep in mind I firmly believe that honesty is the foundation to ANY relationship. So in my mind I believe that if a partner is dishonest with me that partner is "cheating" on me.
And it is not entirely a sexual thing. Actually not even close with me, I can differentiate between sexual feelings, emotional feelings and phyisal actions.
Take for instance the few times I have been "cheated on." How did that happen? I ask myself, for one I took things for granted (BIG MISTAKE), or was it? I don't do that anymore.
What did I take for granted? My partner. I naturally assumed since we were married that she would do certain things and she assumed I would do certain things. Where did we get lost? Both emotionally and physically.
Neither one of us were there for each other, we stopped sharing our feelings for each other, we had what we wanted. I was the true blue model husband who never looked elsewhere for sex because I was too busy chasing my career and spending the remainder of my time with my son. I left my wife out of my life naturally assuming that she would simply be by my side at all times.
So I was completely outraged when she made arrangements to fill the emotional void in her life with another man.
I simply wasn't there for her, didn't pay attention to her, just assumed that since we were married we were an item.
Now I am a little bit wiser, a lot more immature and still a dumbass.
So the same thing happens years later, I find the love of my life, somebody who fulfills my needs. Key word there is "MY."
We have the whole sexually open relationship, I'm still chasing my career, but again I fail to recognize her needs on an emotional level. In hindsight, all she wants me to do is want her. But I don't recognize that, I give her everything she could want, what more can I give? She has everything she ever "wanted," well almost. She wanted a man to be there for her, but again I am too busy chasing my career and again I take her for granted, assuming she will always be there for me, isn't that what marriage is all about? Finding somebody who will always be there for you?
I simply wasn't there for her when she needed me. She found "outlets" to cheat on me, nonsexually, I found outlets to cheat on her emotionally because I was lonely. We found ourselves "emotionally" disattached. We would talk with each other on the phone or online, about landscaping issues, our dog, how the day was going and we grew apart.
Not that either of us actually wanted something different, we just had our seperate lives.
Now in my current relationship. Okay, somebody please hit me with a large trout!!! Same deal, sexually open relationship, she has her life, I have my life, we are both very "concerned" about the way we feel about each other so we do things to drive each other away and it never works, just makes us want each other more. She is a lot like me, we both have our own place, I am done with sharing stuff or trying to build a life with someone so I build my own and she builds her own.
She has fucked other guys, I don't call that cheating. What she did do recently was post a personal ad stating that she loves to be the passenger on a motorcycle so guys with motorcycles are a big plus. I felt like I got hit in the chest with a hammer.
How fucked up is that?

I cheated on one of my longest and deepest sexual relationships with someone who was the complete opposite. Just because I was curious how it feels like with someone completely else. Someone from the lower end of the dexterity scale. Someone who grabs my dick from the other side. Someone who has her thumb on the right side. Someone who would always have been there for me even though I neglected her most of the time.
What can I say? She did her job pretty well, but she could never get it done nearly as fast as the one who knows best what my cock needs. The one who forgave me the second I cheated on her and even did the whole cleanup thing. Thank you so much, you truly showed me that you're the right one for me, hands down.

For what it's worth, I agree with an earlier post which basically stated that, as long as a man feels truly loved, truly respected, truly admired, truly appreciated, and sexually excited by his woman, he's going to stay put.
The one exception is if he's a jerk or a narcissist. Then all bets are off. Then nothing will ever be enough. He'll always be curious about the grass being greener, and think with his dick, citing human nature as his excuse.
While I agree that all human beings are born with a natural proclivity toward selfishness, I shudder that there are some who believe this is a reasonable justification to just live selfishly, be it regarding sex, common courtesy, money, or whatever.
Of course, if our highest authority is science, and the only difference between us and animals is our intellect and appearance, then it makes perfect sense to just simply live for ourselves. But the fact that we all innately know this is not right, shows me that there's much more to the picture.
So, assuming you didn't pick a jerk or a narcissist, I'll cite my simple little motto for KNOWING your man or woman won't stray: Choose WISELY, treat KINDLY. Foolproof. Of course, HOW to do those 2 things, is an entirely different thread!

I would wager that some do it out of revenge. Like if a wife uses sex as a weapon, withholds it, etc... I could see how a man could rationalize cheating as a "revenge" tactic.
I would say some do it out of fear of success... some people are simply self destructive and can't help but sabotaging themselves. In such a case, it would be the appearance of a healthy sex life that would cause them to cheat - fearing the success of a relationship.
And there are some men (women are the same) who are just plain arrogant... above the rules of society, of social bonds, including those of monogamy. These are borderline (or full) sociopaths and cannot easily be recognized... at least at first.
There are other men-likely married or with someone a long time who want something a bit more "fantastic" and are either too much of a pussy or know the outcome of discussing it with wife/girlfriend.... so they simply go elsewhere. In a case like this, they are seeking satisfaction, but not in a malicious way, just a selfish one.
Some men are gay and find themselves married to a woman... that one speaks for itself.
I bet I could come up with a dozen more... so the short answer here is "no, but there are many common themeS"

Probably the same reason that women cheat, boredom, attention, and the couple growing apart, also the lack of the inner voice telling you "no".
Howard Stern once remarked something along these lines "show me a really beautiful woman, and I'll show you a man tired of putting up with her shit"

The fraternal order of men has a plethora of opportunists and they will use any excuse to "step-out" on their significant other. That being said not all men go "run the streets"!!! The stats of how many actually do step-out is probably less than those that don't stray, in one's humble opinion!!!

I wouldn't call it cheating, if there are no feelings involved. Just sex in exchange for money or a presents is no cheating to me.
I once been to a massage place with some friends. Everyone had been seperated to his wife/girlfriend for a couple of months. It was just fun, and everyone still love their partners.
Cheating is when feelings are involved.

I think it the way women walk that makes a man cheat, It is the fault of the liberal and permissive society we have adopted. Look at the way women dress, and the way they smell. Well it's everything about them. I'm sure there's far less cheating in Saudi Arabia where women observe a more modest decorum.

OK, Isn't it true though that women in western society dress to enhance their desirably? Although they may dress to impress their attractiveness on select potential mates. Their mode of attire attracts men far and wide. Wreaking havoc on many a man resolve to remain chaste until the marriage bed or providing irresistible temptations to those already yoked. I remain convinced that women are the source of the problem and if they would adopt those concealing bee-keeper costume middle eastern women favor we'd have less male cheating and consider the money women would save. They would only need use eye make-up and wear good shoes.

^^Blossom I was being a sarcastic. To see what I think about cheating go to page two of this thread. I'm a cheater. It is the way I'm built. I'm in the gathering experiences stage of life. When I'm old and sitting on a river bank with a fishing pole. I want to have fond memories of the embrace of the arms and legs of many different women to comfort me. I want memories of good male and female friends with whom I've shared the times of life. I want the woman I love to look from our window and wonder what I'm smiling about. I say it as a guy who has come to terms with what I need to be happy. To maintain my relationship with the woman I love I must be responsible and careful not to allow any of it to interfere with our contented life. That means not forming emotional relation with other women. As for the other women I never lie about being in a relationship or mis-characterize being with me as anything other than what it is, a short but damn good time.

I would agree with you ntfighter about the way a woman walks, dresses, smells and everything about a woman that makes a man want her, regardless of if he is cheating or not.
I would tend to disagree with your liberal and permissive society thoughts, but can't rule them out.
I do want to elaborate a tad because I'd like to point out that once a person "gets a woman or man" they do change. I am trying to be unisexual at this point...But guys quit touching women the way they do in courting, women tend to wear less and less makeup, perfume, dressing real nice.
We all want to impress, so we tend to go all out when looking for a suitable mate or am I wrong? Once we get what we want there is no reason to impress anymore.
I will use myself as an example, I work a lot, so when I "get a woman" she feels so comfortable with me that she doesn't "have to put on make up to impress me" like she might have felt she had to when we were dating, she doesn't feel like she needs to look sexy when I come home, comfies and a sweatshirt are just fine with no makeup. I don't know, it takes all the pizazz out of it. I like to go out and do things. So even though I am not disinterested in the person I am with, I am disinterested with the appearance they put forth? Sounds terrible.

Why do you lie should be the real question.
If you wanna fuck 1000 women before you die, why bother with a wife and a closed relationship?

I think I understand it Savoy, the difference between lying and cheating. As if there is such a thing. You also mention "closed" relationship as opposed to an open relationship. Right now I am in an "open" relationship. We set rules as to what would constitute "cheating," fucking somebody else isn't on either of our lists for "cheating." Taking time away from one another crosses the line for us, we mutually agreed upon that. The only thing I am having an issue with is that she doesn't want any other woman riding on the back of my bike. She says that is something we share together. I know this sounds totally fucked up to many people reading this. The reason I have an issue with this "rule" is that I use my bike as a mode of transportation, how am I going to bring somebody home? But it is way more than that. I equate the feelings of sex with the feelings I get from riding my bike. I like to give, I would say I am a giver, this is my problem with women. I like to give them a taste of something they never had before. So when a girl has been on the back of a bike going well over the posted speed limit, it's fun. Then we eat ice cream and savor the moment. If she just wants to eat ice cream and go home that is good with me, but nine times out of ten she wants more and so do I. So we end up licking the dripping ice cream off of each others chins, then we kiss. Once we kiss it's all over if the chemistry is right, which it usually is. My g/f knows this which is why she put that "stipulation" on me. So far I have been a good boy because I totally enjoy spending time with her, BUT the other day she came to see me, no make up, just pajamas, which doesn't bother me, and I decided I wanted a Harvey Wallbanger so we had to go "out." She got mad at me cuz I wanted to "go out" and didn't bring her "going out" clothes or makeup, she thought we were staying in. Well whatever, I'm rambling now.

What about the woman you are cheating on? Does she just accept your wondering ways or do you lie to her? Do you have an open relationship where she can see other men? If you found her in the company of another, would you feel betrayed?

I've met honorable, but I don't think I've have personally seen a truthful man. If you think one is truthful it could be that you've never caught him in a lie. I guess it works out to be the same thing.
It's an ideal that my be unattainable. I don't expect anything supernatural from my mate. I'm just a man. she can not in reality expect superhuman abilities from me. If the circumstance come together and she finds herself having sex with someone else. She need not gather herself and make a confession to me. I love her. I like having her with me. I'm not going to deprive myself of her company because on some specific date she gave in to human nature. She is not going to deprive herself of my tender ministrations because I give in to human nature.

No, by expert planning, good fortune and decades of commitment the conversation has never come up.
If or when it does rest assured I will lie like a Persian rug.
Boy, you guys are behaving as if you don't lie to your mates ever. Did you have a friend the spouse didn't care for, or a activity she doesn't like you to engage in, exclude cheating here. relatives that you can't bare being around.
I acknowledge my Narcissism. I don't find it unusual. Again it is within the realm of normal human response. What kind of relationship is it if the only reason one does not cheat is the fear of discovery? I know the answer. A Narcissistic one.
Is masturbation cheating? stealing a sidelong glance at someone sexy cheating? is watching adult movies cheating? I think they could be so construed.

Absolute honesty in a relationship, while not impossible, is an impracticably high standard. I want nothing to do with it. I focus on her well being in a holistic sense. That standard has involved lying in the past and I fully expect it will in the future. The common denominator for me is do we each have the others best interest at heart.
She can trust that I will always be with her. That when she needs me there is nothing on earth that will keep me from her side. All that is mine is her's. I was a wild and crazy street kid when we met. She picked me up dusted me off and convinced me I was a worthwhile human being. I owe her my life....... But I'm going to get a little strange wild free range pussy every now and again.

^^Let us define the parameter of the discussion. I've taken a position. Now it time for all those who are absolutely honest in their relationship to declare themselves. So we now whether we are on opposite sides or shading it a bit.
There is quite a large number of things I've learned without having directly experienced them. I've never jumped from a five story building, but my mom told me and I'm absolutely positive from observation the direct experience will be detrimental to my continued existence.

There my be no excuses acceptable to you, but There are lots of reasons. I on the other hand arm myself with good excuses before each episode. If you have set "no cheating" as the thing that will cause you to leave a relationship. I'd like to know what other demands and how long is the list you have your girlfriend/boyfriend live under. No weight gain/loss, final approval on hair styles, speech pattern, carriage, no locking the bathroom door? Were they aware of the deal breaker list before getting together.

Don't keep me in suspense. Do you lie or don't you.
What do you base that opinion on popular media?, christian dogma? conventional wisdom? wishful thinking? It's isn't reality based. Really people cheat. All the time. Doesn't mean all people cheat, but there is a high probability of it happening. They may not follow my lead and plan for it, but that doesn't dispel the reality. I believe the person who said" "people are only as faithful as their options" was right..
My mom wasn't much for corporeal punishment, but I think a question like that would have earned an exception. My parents had never heard of Dr. Spock. That was grown folks business.
