OK here we go:

I turn on the computer. my password doesn't work and I don't know why. I've used the same one for the past 3 or 4 years. No the caps lock wasn't on. I don't know what to do, so I go ahead and reinstall. To my surprise, all the same programs are still installed, but the files are gone.

Now, the files take up a considerable amount of space, about 90% of a 120Gb disk. But I check my c drive and it says the 90% is still taken up, but I can't access them.

What have I done? Did I create a new account? I tried to log off, but there is no other account to log into. I need all that shit on my hard drive.

Are you logged on as administrator?

Can you look around in Windows Explorer and at least find your old files? Or try searching the hard drive for an unusual file name that you remember being there?

well my original account was administrator. The adminstrator files are all there, but I don't know how to log in as admin

Sounds like you need to take ownership of the drives.

If you can download the Ultimate Boot CD (from http://ultimatebootcd.com) it contains a tool that you can boot into and you can set the Administrator password to a blank.

This has saved my butt on server systems where the passwords were not documented many times.

One other thought: as far as the password suddenly not working, try typing it out in Notepad or some other program where the characters won't be masked. If it's a well-used keyboard, it's possible that you've got a key that isn't working, and you're not noticing it when you're typing in the password and just seeing asterisks.

Well my problem now is that I cannot even get to a log in to get to the admin account. When I boot up, I go straight into the new "installation." I can see all my files under All Users>Administrator, but I cannot use them in any practical sense

WEll I seem to have fixed. In the other account I did some things in the registry to get it to boot as admin sans password so I guess I'm good for now.

Now the question now is:
Why did my admin password quit working in the first place?
