After going on a JAV binge I've been drifting back to the west, but alone with the revolting tattoos, piercings and male performers, the camerawork is another element of American porn that's just awful. They turn the camera on screwball angles and do the ever-popular extreme closeup.

Who's to blame, the cameramen or the directors? JAV, for all the annoyances of the pixilation, shoots very well. You get full length body shots, straighter angles, highlighting the woman's body, lots of POV shots with the girl looking right into the camera (they give the camera to the male performer), shooting a missionary scene and still managing to get almost all of the guy out of the shot.

I don't say this to bash, I want to know why we settle for so much less.

I feel the same way , Ordell. I can't stand the camerawork in today's porn. The camera operators are all over the place with weird angles , fast zooming in and out , way too much shaking and movement ...and many of them don't seem to know what to focus on and when. In other words , they film the wrong things at the wrong time. Ex. when 2 girls are french kissing , don't fucking film their asses, for crying out loud !!!
There's plenty of time to show everything but some of these guys film as if they have a plane to catch. This is not MTV , it's porn.

It might help if you give examples of what you're referring to....instead of pointing the finger at "American porn". That's a bit too general.

I totaly agree with these comments about bad camera work in american porn. Especially gonzo movies. Most gonzo is like home movies. Do you think that the people shooting these movies have university training to do this job? For sure I say, and Bush is loved in my country too.

I was born and raised in Europe. I worked on many big productions for Private and many other companies. The camera man is usually very professional. It was like a joke when the americans started shooting in Europe. We couldn't understand why they work that way. The camera man flying the camera all over the place. Some of the movies look like a monkey was given a camera to play with. They just point it and walk all over the place without looking at the picture. They don't use camera supports or good lights. Is this supposed to make the movie more erotic or something? It makes me dizzy.... I think these people just don't know how to make a movie is probably the reason.

The last few belladonna titles have lots of movement.
"storm squirters" by Joey Silvera has very bad camera work.
Some of the "Mouth2Mouth" volumes by Chico Wang have very fast zooming and tilting.
Seymore Butts moves and shakes alot ...always did.
Extreme Associates is insane.
Many "Vertigo" titles by Martin del toro were horribly filmed.

There are many more that I have seen but I just can't remember the specifics. It's not just American porn , though. Rocco and Christoph Clarke aren't too steady , either. I have also seen some british porn with terrible camera work , as well as Brazilian porn.
So far , the Japanese have been the best , in my opinion. They have some bad ones , too , but almost everything that I have seen has been well filmed and well lit.

Um, anything? Lately I've Dl'ed a few Devon Michaels clips and they are unwatchable simply because of the cockeyed angle. I have to twist my head until one ear is on my shoulder to take in the action.

I agree with you, Izabella. I'd like to offer this--that few (if any) Americans who make porn are skilled at their craft. In America, talented filmmakers gravitate to the lucrative mainstream motion picture, film, television and advertising industries. Those Americans with little or no talent can't compete in that rarified atmosphere; and some choose adult as a viable option to working 9-5.

In parts of Europe, there may not be as many opportunities for cameramen to ply their trade as there are in America. As a result, perhaps more talented cameramen in Europe choose adult as an option, and when they do, comparison to the less-talented American counterparts becomes obvious. This is one explanation for what I agree is so often terrible camera work in American-adult. Because there are many talented, Academy Award winning American cinematographers working in mainstream film, as evidenced by the tremendous output of mainstream American filmmakers, the reason for poor camerawork in American adult may be that it's the career of choice of those who cannot compete with their mainstream counterparts.

There is hope.... All new scenes shot by Ducati Productions are now shot on a jib mounted to a dolly on a track. Audio is run through a boom mike and mixer as well. You will not be seeing the "18" cammera man" shots from the floor to the ceiling, no zooms so tight your eyes cant keep up with the motion, More medium to full length body shots to see what is actually going on in the scene, NO shakey camera, no running in zoom ins/outs, No sideways camera angles that make you have to tilt your head to watch the scene and audio that doesnt fade/get louder as camera moves in and out.

Just our opinion, but we think this is the way it should be. If we are wrong, so is mainstream movie and television production.

Heh well good for you Ducati. I really am tired of the laziness in the porno industry. They seem to have this notion that because they are a fringe industry there's no reason for excellence or pride in work done well.

This not only pertains to video, but stills too.
The cameras now are so easy to use, EVERYONE is now a photographer or video camera person. Many have no clue about composition, expression or lighting. Number one, they don't see something objectionable in the shot, because they were never trained to. And IF they see it, the attitude is we'll photo shop it out or do it in post. All that takes extra time and costs extra money.

Yes, I shoot some tight shots of penetration, but the beauty of a woman is from the waist up. I shoot lots of those parts...boobs and faces. When real people have sex, what does a guy want to watch while his partner has an orgasm? Her pussy or her face? If he looks at her face, he sees the pleasure he has given her. And before I'm accused of having something against butts or legs, I shoot those too. But it's all about the facial expressions. Just my opinion.

Hi Coachcam,

There's definately nothing wrong with shooting tight shots of penetration. I like close ups too. I think that a good balance can be obtained quite easily with just a little bit of coaching. Videos are longer ...so there is plenty of time to capture good footage. There is no reason to have the camera going at a frantic pace. Let the energy and intensity come from the actresses / actors.
I seriously don't see how filming a sex scene can be so difficult. I have made a few custom videos and , with just a few notes in my script , the cameraman was able to capture almost exactly what I wanted....and I am talking very amateur stuff here . ( inferior equipment , low budget , no training)
The way I see it , many camera operators are very likely just interested in their own ideas and they are not thinking of the customer. This is the biggest problem , IMO.

Well said. I know that you put a lot of effort into your productions. We do as well. It seems that with the advent of the gonzo category, professionalism and creativity in adult went out the window. Yes there is hope and change is in the wind in this crowded market. The consumers are getting tired of bad productions. The cream will eventually rise to the top.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I will be checking out your studio's titles immediately.

Close ups obviously have an attraction to many (or they would not be so ubiquitous), but seeing "body parts" fucking doesn't do a thing for me -- seeing attractive people fucking does.

Coach, I see what you mean about real sex. But this is porn. I, as a viewer, want the option of seeing all the action in a frame.

Perhaps it is adequate for some to see in the camera's view only penetration, or only her face, or quick-cutting back and forth, but I will continue to search for porn with full face-and-action-framed shots.

The biggest thing that really irritates me is when I hear someone say "It's Just porn". It's that kind of attitude why there is so much crap out there. In the past few weeks I have gone back to my "roots" as a porn watcher to see what gets me off. It can be easy to lose touch with the early days of enjoying porn before you produced it. Thanks to hot movies website I am able to watch scenes of every other company's stuff on there and I am blown away at how truly bad most of the production is. And by the way, the cutaway to dudes face right before the pop is the worst! I promise we will never ever do that again in any movie we shoot for ourselves or anyone ever again. What a wood killer! It really helped to become the consumer again.

I have recently gone to the sets of mad TV and the Dr. Phil show for the sole purpose of watching how mainstream does things. There is most definatly a right way to do this stuff and it's not that difficult. I don't claim to be the best, but I guarantee you we are always working on it and we have invested in top notch production equipment. Every time someone from the industry comes by and sees our set they are blown away at the equipment we use to shoot porn because they never see it and know it's right. If you ever run across Peter North at one of the shows he will tell you one of the best shot scenes he has is the one we shot of him and Amber Bliss for his North Pole series. Check out this post from YankNSpank after he saw one of our latest scenes. https://forum.adultdvdtalk.com/forum/topic.dlt/topic_id=95437/forum_id=1/cat_id=1/95437.htm#post0

My point is there is a right way to shoot anything, be it porn, a documentary, a tv show, or star wars. Take the time to make the best product you can. Pay attention to the little details. Cut the tags of the chicks panties for god's sake. Get the wisp of hair stuck in her lipstick out of her mouth before you take the pretty girls. Male talent, KISS the girl why don't you. And for me personally, the gagagagah blowjob is such a turn off and I wont shoot it. (Yeah I know some of you like it.)

For me the scenes that I like are the ones that are more like true to life sex. What you do in real life. In real life I pretty much don't pile drive my girlfriends or bust on their face, I cum in them, not on them, they are not asking me if I like fucking their tight eighteen year old pussy, they already know I do. And we spend time feeling each other up and kiss alot before during and after we fuck. But hey that's just me.

Search no further, we have what you are looking for. I will be happy to send you review copies of our latest releases. Just give an honest evaluation, fair enough? Just contact me.

A scene should be an aggregate of well composed shots with varying focal lengths. A well shot and edited scene has a flow and a pace. It should make you want to see what's next... not bore you to tears. No fast forwarding needed in a well produced movie.

Porn has always looked for a gimmick and the easy way out. POV with only close ups is an example of a gimmick. Bad camera work, lack of creativity, poor production values are an example of the easy way out. With the huge amounts of money some of these companies are making off you guys, you should expect and demand a whole lot better. You are the ones spending your hard earned money. But hey "its just porn" right?

I recall reading an interview with Sharon Mitchell where she talked about a new girl, working in her first scene in porn, it was a DP and she said it took 10 hours to shoot. What the effing hell were they doing for 10 hours???

Taking their time? Seriously, you never know the circumstances or how many problems you can run into on a shoot. Short of releasing the girl/guys? from the set.... You must have patience. Some feature scenes can take up to 12 hours to shoot.

Well,
first of all every body knows there is no porn university !
You learn all on your own !
Some individuals has more talent than others !

In today's porn anybody can buy a camera and call him self porn director !

I've seen some professional cameraman working in porn...
Their camera work was not really better than some beginners !
They know how to set up the camera and all the theory about it but to shoot porn it's a long school where you learn every single day a little more !

Some people in the porn doesn't even know how to do a white balance properly and sometimes prefers to shoot in automatic mode !

Now in Hungary we have HUSTLER TV. I saw some films where I believe the cameraman (if I can call him like this) had absolutely no clue about how to shoot, how to use a camera, how to set up a camera !
No white balance, auto focus on, zooming all the time even if it's not required and etc... !
The only knowledge about camera is limited to ON/OFF

I don't buy the excuse. There are film schools all over LA. Even a cheap, basic course in camerawork or direction would do wonders. But again, I guess it's asking too much to expect some pride of ownership in the Porn Valley.

When you see the kind of people involved in the porn in the valley... (but it's not a generality)
Sometimes it's hard to believe that they spent in their lives even 1 day in a elementary school !
The only motivation is $$$ !

This thread reminds me of one of my worst pet peeves: the death of customer service. Nobody gives a good goddamn about quality, much less quality of experience. It's all "shit it and get it" and have the worst fucking attitude about having to do it in the first place while you're at it.

I can name you any number of lazy, disaffected apathetic pornographers that make me want to slap them. Shoddy camera work is just the tip of the iceberg. "Who cares, it's only porn," they'll say.

Who cares, it's just food preparation. Who cares, it's just personal hygiene among food processing workers and preparers (you don't want to know why the Tyson chicken has been recalled so much lately).

Who cares, it's just med school.

This "who cares, it's just" attitude makes me want to fucking puke on your shoes and say "who cares, it's just breakfast".

Feh. Get me fucking started this fucking early in the fucking morning....

I don't think the problem is really that porn fans aren't picky enough. To the contrary. I've read enough on this forum to see that most porn fans are very picky. The problem is that virtually everyone is different and it's almost impossible to satisfy everyone. Shoot it one way one group complains. Shoot it their way, the other group complains. Shoot it your way, everybody complains. Everybody wants it to be done their way. They want to see what they like and they don't care what other people like.

Porn producers, figuring correctly that they're damned if they do and damned if they don't, shoot it as economically as they can, aiming for what they figure will be a majority market. The majority is used to MTV and various other similar stuff. And they're right. It sells. People complain but they still buy it. the 19 year olds with raging hormones aren't generally looking for production values. They just want to beat off. The basic truth here is that the people who make porn know their market. People who demand quality are a minority.

To Randomprecision,

I don't think that many people would complain if the camera work was less shaky. Just because the music industry made young kids used to MTV , it doesn't mean that the porn industry has to copy that style.

Cobalt60 no disrespect taken. You are right on again. Talk is cheap. Yes I have always tried my best to apply my ethics to my work. I have been around longer than most people in this business. Trying to produce sexy and entertaining movies on time constraints and with a low budget is challenging to say the least. Me and my people REALLY do care about what we produce. I'll just let my track record speak for itself.

My experimental feature movie "Dark Desires" has appeared in prime time slots on Playboy TV's "Directors Cut Theatre". Since 2002 all of my work for Puritan International "Video Magazine" volumes 42 to 51 were selected for broadcast on cable TV PPV's, Satellite, Hotel chains. My latest 4 new releases under my own TKP logo have already been picked up for cable TV PPV and Hotel chains. These movies are "The Collectors", "Country Fresh" also titled as "Sex Crazed Farm Girls" for cable PPV, "The Metrosexual" and "Derrière Digest". Not many studios get picked up for these venues. Why? The sales brokers are very picky and tell me that most stuff they receive for review goes into the trash can.

I thank you for your kind words wishing us success. We aren't trying to blow smoke at people. We are trying very hard to bring the standards of adult up to where we think it should be. We aren't producing high budget features right now. We hope too eventually. Our movies are feature/gonzo crossovers with great sex and quality production values.

We would be happy to send you samples of our work. Please just let me know if you are interested.
Again thank you for your comments.

My definition of great camera work/production values consists of the following....

Guy on his back, facing up. Girl riding him cowboy style. Camera between guy's knees facing up at girl's butt.
Hold camera still for at least 2 minutes.

Any movie with this in it is a work of art.

Camera movement is definitely a problem. They keep moving the cameraman around to give the illusion of action where there is none, especially early on, when the actors are warming up and getting things going. I just wish they'd hold the fuck still. I get enough of that moving camera crap on Battlestar Galactica.

As a performer I've been to over 2000 sets in Europe and in the USA. You find a lot of good professional people on both sides of the Atlantic.

To compare a regular PRIVATE production to a traveling gonzo line (i.e. Anabolic World Sex Tour) is unfair. It is a totally different category.

I think porn is all about personal taste. Good porn is when you want to jerk off to it. For some people that is a great picture with perfect lighting, for others it might be the amateur look.

That is really not true for many people. But I've learned that you have to compromise. You either work on perfect picture quality or you try to capture real sex. I prefer the real sex.

I still try to get as good picture quality as possible. I've invested a lot in equipment and learned from many sources. But once the sex starts I try not to interrupt the action. Shoot it more like a reportage.

If you want a perfect picture you have to re-light every angle. That kills the passion.

All I want are some straight up normal sex angles. I find it hilarious that they spend money renting mansions and then shoot sex scenes with the actors hanging painfully off the damn couch in an uncomfortable position. That's another plus in favor of JAV. They put the girl in an open room and she gets fucked on a bed or the floor. Rarely is it on a couch. The couple, or guys and girl, can stretch out and the cameraman shoots around them with ease. Not like this couch nonsense, where the sides and back get in the way.

Didn't Tom Byron say his back was shot when he retired? What 41 year old man ruins his back fucking? Answer: one who fucks hanging off a couch all the time.

It's an issue for me, you see, because I like my porn to be vicarious. As Steve said above, it should make you want to jerk off. When I watch some of the movies today and the painful contortions both partners have to engage in, all I can think is 'how can you fuck like that?'

I 100% agree with you Ordell !
It looks like they are looking for performance rather than just sex !
Sometimes it's not really realistic !
It can even be a big turn off even for me being in the business for 15 years !
Or it just make me laugh looking at them trying to fuck in the ultimate position...!

Nothing more annoying than beautiful women being shot by the crappiest directors who don't have a clue. But I feel the poor shooting is everywhere, not just in the U.S. Extreme close ups and everything shot from the ground up and holding that angle forever. Randy West I think did it best when he had his shots filmed from almost every angle, satisfying all viewers. Some of my favorite series like Peter North's "Northpole" series have fallen in this same poor shooting, even Suze Randall is falling into this dumb phase. What's the deal?

One of my main pet peeves, is when a girl is doing an airtight, (mouth, pussy and ass penetration) and the action shifts to just a head shot of a girl, then moves frantically to a genitalia shot, while spending the least amount of time on showing all three at once! The girl's being serviced in three ways, so it makes sense to me to show that action while it's occurring. Other wise one could just just hire two guys, do the genitalia shot, then splice that in with some blowjob footage from earlier, lol. But in general, I will say that I have been seeing more full body shots in the more recent purchases that I've made, relative to what I typically watched in the 90's which tended to spend extensive periods of time on genitalia shots.

in response to Steve's thoughtful post.....
maybe, to keep the passion going as a new angle was lit, the performers could try to keep going at each other but a burly porn intern would jump onto the bed and hold the two of them apart. (This could be filmed for the BTS!) She'd be grabbing for his cock and lunging back towards him, but the bouncer guy would say "Break it up, break it up" and stiff arm her. Then the guy would try a football spin move to try and get past the intern and re-insert himself, but the intern would be waiting with an Acme brand vagina clamp. Then the crew would say they were ready for the new angle and the intern would take his seat and resume eating his sandwich.
Just saying it doesn't have to be boring during a well planned out scene.
(the inspiration for the "burly porn intern" idea was Jew Hefner's security guard in Fuck for Dollars 6.)

I hate this shot as well. Other annoying shots is when they shoot the blowjob from underneath or even worse, through the guy's legs! These kind of unnatural shots mystify me.

Not sure if this was mentioned but I hate the guy picking the girl up while he's standing and bouncing her up and down to show how strong he is. Just jealous I guess. That would fucking kill me !
