I really don't know much about the PS3... I picked up a Xbox360 and have been happy with it. Some fun games and the controller is much better than the clunker the Xbox had...

Good luck on finding a definitive answer here. I can say this though, the XBox 360 should be a bit cheaper than the PS3, but the PS3 will be HD/Blu Ray.

I predict there won't be much of a difference graphically.

PS3 is still vapor ware until it is released and we see what it really offers. From what I know of the two systems here are some pros and cons.

XBOX 360 Pros
-XBOX LIVE
-XBOX LIVE Arcade
-Media Centre extender
-more games... for now
-availability

XBOX 360 Cons
-build quality? Overheating?
-No HDMI
-maxes out at 720p/1080i
-expensive peripherals
-spotty backwards compatibility
-hard drive capacity a little small (but still usable)

PS3 Pros
-more dedicated Japanese developers, possibly better games
-Blu Ray
-1080p
-does it have built-in wireless networking

PS3 Cons
-Blu Ray
-Price
-No common online service. it's being left to the individual developers.
-availability. good luck finding one before next summer.
-unproven
-Ken Katuragi overpromising, overhyping and presenting cut scenes as game footage.

As of right now the 360 comes closest to what I want out of a console. Next Gen games, ability to play my shared videos and music on my television while keeping my computers in the den. But that could change if Sony wakes up

PS3 will be region-free whereas the 360 is not.

If I had to choose I would get a Xbox 360
lower price
games look better
Developers have said it's easier to develop games for
Xbox Live even though it cost 50 dollars a year
more games

I can't think of one reason why to get a PS3 over a XBOX 360 unless you want Final Fantasy games because most games this generation are coming to both consoles.

BTW I'm getting a Wii

are you sure about that? Sony are one of the proponents to using regional codes to restrict distribution.

ok it's only for games, that makes sense. Most games that are restricted by region are either in Japanese (and are inherently bizarre) or have Nazi imagery (prohibited in Germany)

From what I understand the PS3 is supposed to be fully backwards compatable, like the PS2 is.

Backwards compatibility always seems important at the time, but it becomes irrelevant quickly. How many PS2 owners have played a PS1 game in the last four years?
