They cant keep their contract girl while on the other hand companies like Digital Playground and Wicked dont seem to have the same problems. When they are losing girls at the rate they are something is seriously wrong

I agree somewhat with popdog. Vivid's main problem is that they have too many contract girls. When you have that many you can't really focus and give the girls the individual attention that they want and deserve for being contracted. When you have all these contract girls you have to release a lot of titles cause it's stipulated that the girl get X number of titles per year and X number of covers. Wicked and Digital Playground on the other hand have fewer contract girls and usually give each girl one big release a year. Now it doesn't always mean that each girl gets her own movie, they usually end up sharing. But the whole point is that they get the full swing of the company behind it as par as marketing and such. With Vivid they can't do that cause of how many movies they have to release in order to fulfill contracts. Club Jenna can give there girls that release if they wanted. There problem though is that they don't release enough. There better about it now but before they'd only release a couple titles a month.

Is it possible that the contracts simply expired and one of the parties chose not to renew?

Yes that is possible Drew. The big question is who in most of those cases decided not renew, the studio or talent.
Currently Vivid has 14 contract Stars
Brea Lynn
Cassidey
Jenna Jameson
Kayden Kross
Lacey Love
Lanny Barby
Lyndsey Love
Monique Alexander
Savanna Samson
Stefani Morgan
Sunny Leone
Sunrise Adams
Tera Patrick
Tiffany Taylor
That is according to adultdvdempire.com. They usually keep that pretty up to date. You could take Jenna and Tera off since technically they have there own studios and pretty much only shoot for there label. That still puts Vivid at 12.

If you take into account it's past history, Vivid has done more for the porn biz than any other company in marketing, paying top dollar to performers, and gaining respect for the biz from the mainstream world.
Still, the premise of this thread is correct--Vivid has lost their touch. There are probably many reasons, but I'll just state two.
First, like many sports teams or large companies, Vivid lost "touch" with it's employees/stars needs. They figured since they paid top dollar (which they do) they didn't need to give the girls what "they" wanted--individual promotion, awards, and cross-over opportunities. Most Vivid Girls' opportunities in these areas were really focused on "the company" not the girls. And at some point each Vivid Girl realizes that the company doesn't really care about her career.
The other problem is that Vivid no longer does what it was once famous for doing--producing quality sexvids. No, not the nastiest, or most extreme or hardcore. But quality, couples erotica. Sexvids that were well photographed, on attractive sets, had a story that didn't degrade the girl--and was logical. So even though Vivid is constantly trying "new" things (gonzo, IR, alt. porn, etc.) they have no one working behind the camera who has a "good eye" for visual composition or can photograph a scene beautifully. None of Vivid's in-house directors, for example, could have made "Island Fever 4." Speaking of directors, Vivid's top in-house director has lost his ability to tell a coherent story--"Sextet", "Emperor", "The Devil and Miss Jones", "Debbie Does Dallas". None of these movies had narratives that anyone NOT spaced out on drugs could make sense of.
So Vivid Girls either leave for other companies (like Digital Playground) where there is someone with a strong visual style, to Wicked, where there's a director who can tell a story--in order to be in quality product. Or they simply exercise other options and leave the biz.
But, I could go on...

Here in Europe, Vivid is only "living" out of
the strong backlist they have.
They have produced very good couple movies,
they have done much to attract new customers,
but I cant remember ONE single title, that
was a big seller this year. I cant even remember
one VIVID title at all, that was released this year.
