I'm 46 and never had a girlfriend and I'm sick of it all. I have a bunch of Norco (hydrocodone) pills. Are those a painless way to go?

I don't think you should kill yourself. Why do you think you never had a girlfriend?

My understanding is that on-line dating sites work pretty well. A friend of mine just married a guy she met online, and they seem really happy. Since you've never had a girlfriend, it might take you a while to learn about dating and relationships, so be patient. If the first few don't go well, then try again.
As for suicide, I'm obviously going to say, "Don't do it!" I had a close family member who committed suicide, and a lot of other people suffered for his decision to escape his own suffering. Whatever you do will affect other people. It would be much better to bring happiness to a woman than to bring suffering to your friends and family.

^ at first I thought you were suggesting on-line dating as a painless way of committing suicide. The thought occurred to me it might work, but I wasn't sure about the painless part. Now I realize you're offering an alternative to painless express checkouts.
As for the OP's question, I'm not sure about the pills.....you might try letting your car run in an enclosed garage. I understand the CO just makes you go to sleep and you just don't wake up.

^ Only some women want money. Usually they want money because they've decided men are assholes who are only good for providing them money so that they can do something they actually enjoy doing. Instead of killing yourself, you could just avoid that group.
Other women want a man who has confidence in himself, because confidence in yourself is a pretty good indicator of your ability to succeed. Still other women want a man who wants to be mothered.
I've only scratched the surface here, but what you should take away from this is that you have to find those women who are looking for what you have to offer. You can't just expect every woman to see you as a perfect match, or even as a fixer-upper.
Now, you can decide to offer additional characteristics, benefits, what have you, because you'll have a broader appeal, but the primary thing is that you have to know yourself and be confident in what your self is capable of before you can sell your self to anybody else.
Hope that makes more sense than offing yourself. I mean, there are good reasons for exiting stage left, but yours isn't one of them.

Why you shouldn't
1). You're an entomologist (I assume from your username) and entomologists are cool.
2). Many people screw up and unsuccessful and live their remaining lives with organ damage (brain damage, liver, heart...).
3). Most importantly, you have plenty of time. One of my relative didn't get get seriously dating and married until he was mid to late 50s. Lots of people have different timelines and you're not the only one.
4). I've almost did that and then things started turning around right after I changed my mind and today realized it would have been a big mistake, by not waiting a little longer (things would have been much different and better).
5). CummingLinguist is right, my grandfather committed suicide and has affected me and mother greatly ever since negatively.
6). There are good and effective medical and psychological treatments and options to help you during hard times (I can attest and used). You just need to take steps to get it.

You don't want to kill yourself. You want sympathy. If you really wanted to kill yourself, you would have googled suicide methods instead of posting about it here.
Money isn't why you don't have a girlfriend. That's an excuse you've constructed to explain why you're single. The reality is probably much different.

Ok. You really think money is why you can't get a girlfriend? If you had to pick another reason, what would it be? In fact, think of everything you possibly can about yourself that you believe might be hindering your chances.
Then tell us.
The people on this forum have great ideas, so lay it all on us.

Here's a posting I made to CL:
"I'm a professional organist. My hobbies include entomology, reading non-fiction, esp. science, math, and philosophy. I like to watch Star Trek and British television. I'm currently working on an analytical paper dealing with late Beethoven. My Meyers-Briggs type is INTP (architect). I belong to Mensa."
Do I sound boring? I got NO responses. I'm sure that if I had said I have a million dollars a lot of women would have replied. Case proven.

Maybe. But it's not about money. Your whole profile is intellectual, and doesn't sound as if you want to have fun. People like fun. "I'm a professional organist" = "I love music and going to concerts," or maybe, "I have tickets for Tosca, would you like to come?" "My hobbies include entomology..." = something about the outdoors or camping or traveling.
Do not tell anyone you belong to Mensa unless they belong to Mensa. Seriously.
You can either impress people, or have them like you. They are two different things and you are going for the former. The Venn diagram for people being impressed by you and liking you is two small circles a few feet apart. Okay, maybe the intersect a teeny bit. Eh, probably not. Look at how people view Al Gore or Mitt Romney--anybody who is impressive but stiff and who doesn't seem to have fun. Your best thing on your profile is watching Star Trek. There are women who like Sci Fi geeks, but you need more. Hell, there are plenty of Women at the Creative Anachronism thing (do they still have that?). Goofy can be appealing.
You know, maybe you don't like to have fun, and that's your real problem, not the lack of a girlfriend.
Tell me what you do that is fun.

You didn't prove your case.
I hardly think an unanswered post on CL means that you're destined to be alone or that women don't want someone like you. Most women don't answer those CL ads. You do sound like an interesting, intelligent guy, but as Lindi said that's all you've showcased about yourself. It all reads rather dry and cold. Also, even though you're supposed to reveal something of who you are, this ad comes off rather self-involved. What kind of traits and qualities do you have that will enhance HER life? What can you bring to the other person? What do you think is important in a relationship?
And yeah, leave out the Mensa bit. Any woman who was even a little bit intrigued would have marked you off after reading that.

Yeah, why do you write 'professional organist?'
I mean, why make that choice when you could say that you are a musician, or that you play keyboards, or that you love music? The organ in particular sounds funereal or religious to a lot of people. Do you play piano or harpsichord? Piano players are often asked to play at parties. Harpsichord might be made to sound playful or non-conformist or experimental or eccentric, if any of those apply.
I'm not knocking anything that you do, but the way you present needs tweaking.
Self-centered -----> things she might enjoy with you
What you are-------> what you enjoy---------> things to enjoy together
It's not a resume, it's an invitation. You don't have to spill everything.
Would you prefer to go out with a woman who says she's a philatelist, or one who says she collects stamps? It's not by itself a big deal, but three or four sentences in a row like that = not fun.
With the exception of watching tv, everything you mentioned is essentially a solitary pursuit. But if you figure out what you do that is fun, and why it's fun, or why it might be fun for someone to join you, then a hobby in entomology turns into, "I'm planning a trip to the Everglades and would like some company for stargazing and canoeing." Or whatever.

ntmlgst what's your secret for not aging over the last two years? You're still "46" and using adolecent attention seeking behavior to ellicit pitty from the women here? Shame on you!
Now, to answer your question. A shotgun blast centered between your upper and lower jaw would most likely be the most painless way to go, albeit quite messy. Not that you would have to worry about cleaning it up.

ntmlgst, your explanatory style and even CL post is way INTP overboard. You are trying to figure out an extremely complex thing, which might even be impossible, into abstract constructs. I've done this too, but eventually I came to peace and just realize I will never decode women, but just try to find women who appeal to me instead of finding a formula to fit all of them (cause they are just like men, individual characteristics).
For posts and dating profiles, Lindi was right, you are trying to impress them. Instead think of it like a resume. The whole purpose of a resume is to get a interview, not to get a job (many people think the later). Resumes are just supposed to get enough interest, so you can show who you really are during your interview. Think of the post the same way. If you don't sound appealing enough, you'll never get the date. Also, put away the MENSA stuff or don't bring it out till later.
As your INTP tendency, don't get to abstract and don't make it a resume. Sell yourself.

Although no method is 100%, there have been lots of people who were rescued from CO poisoning before death resulting in brain damage. Many cases of CO brain damage are really nasty (some resulting in Parkinson's-like disease).
The extremely ironic part is that Parkinson's Disease patients have some of highest suicide ruminations/rates cause their motor systems goes to hell, but cognitive processes stay intact (for most part).

Fun? Like do a big pile of cocaine and keep fucking until your heart blows up? Hmmm. I think I overlooked that possibility.
ntmlgst: When I was in my 20s I thought there was no hope because I couldn't stay passionate about anyone for very long. Definitely my own flaw, but there it was. It was pretty lonely, too. I took a big handful of pills and ended up with a pumped stomach that hurt like hell for quite a while. Then I met my wife when I was in my mid-30s and I'm happy as can be. 17 years and two children worth of happy. I know you're a decade farther down the road than I was, but the point is you eventually find Ms. Right. I met my wife online. I know several others who met this way and they seem to be pretty happy in long-term relationships. One couple we know met through a dating service more than ten years ago and they're very happy, very compatible. So CummingLinguist's suggestion might just be the winner.

Wikipedia recommends asphyxiation via nitrogen gas.
I'd say though that it's also possible to stop being bothered by the lack of a girlfriend and find more important things to focus on.

Nope, he's not responding to any suggestions for improving his life.
For 'fun,' I was thinking autoerotic asphyxiation.

I have a suggestion, get off this forum! Yeh, I'm an insensitive bitch (not really!) but all he wants is to be the center of attention here and have all of us obsequesily fawn over his and his problems, which are a hell of less than the vast majority of the people out there. As lindi said, his obviously has no intention to amake any attempt to incororate any suggestions that anyone makes to help him inprove his life.
Honestly, I don't this he has any of these issues, he's just a troll....

Exactly. He repeatedly posts whines/rants and ignores valid input/advice from the posters here. He has no conception of his own responsibility in his failures, it's ALWAYS women who are "doing" something to him.
This is a common thread with men. They never accept the fact that maybe they are doing something wrong, or that they're scaring women off. It's always women "who are being unfair."

Is your disease communicable? I ask because, you know, the rest of us are going to die, too. That hasn't stopped us from living. I can understand not wanting to make someone you love ill, but you can't save your loved ones from pain. Shit happens, how you deal with it is where the rubber meets the road.

If you're really sick, I'm sorry. But I highly doubt that. You aren't open to advice, solutions, feedback. You cling to your own misery.
EVERYBODY on this forum has been trying to help you, to give you advice and direction, and you ignore it. You're feeding off of this in a really sick, twisted way.
If you want a girlfriend, get off the computer, shave your face, have some fucking pride, and walk like a man.

ntmlgst, I'm not trying to attack. There's just a lot of things that you are not facing.
1) You really do not seem to be interested in other people.
2) If you are interested in other people, then making changes in how you approach them would seem to be easier than killing yourself.
3) You are completely resistant to examining any of the rational points and helpful suggestions that have been offered here.

I'm saving the (relatively) painless way to off yourself for my own demise. Turns out some folks don't like it too much if you give that kind of advice online. Whether the guy is bullshitting or not is irrelevant. If he isn't and you tell him to go do it and he does, guess who his family is gonna blame?
The only thing you can tell him and be safe is to get help. Whether you mean it or not.

^ I've endured enough excruciating physical pain in my life that I don't take the prospect of more of it lightly. Example, if you've slammed your fingers in a car door once, you know the real meaning of the word "PAAAAAAIIIIIN!". That's the kind of pain you would likely endure if you tried to off yourself and botched it. Or if you just didn't consider how painful the method you chose would be before you rushed into it. When you're in agony, minutes are hours.
