Why does Vivid produce explicit and non-explicit box art for their DVD covers? Do they do this with all titles?
I first noticed this on my copy of Bad Wives, which features Dyanna Lauren in a [url=467455]non-explicit photo. Later, I noticed the disc for sale somewhere else with a different, [url=467456]explicit photo on the cover. The back cover of my copy has publicity head shots of various Vivid girls, while the back of the explicit version features scenes from the film.
I found another instance when I saw the recently posted review of Bedlam, which featured a non-explicit frontal shot of Celeste, whereas on my copy, she is topless and has her back turned, so that you can see one of her breasts.
Why have different box art? I guess I could understand if the non-explicit copies were meant to be sold in mainstream retail stores, but even most of the adult-only DVD stores sell the non-explicit version.
Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter, since I've decided not to purchase any more Vivid DVDs after I found out how heavily edited they are.

hi trogon-
lots of studios do hard and soft covers. most of them usually have double-sided covers so the retailer can choose which to display and the customer gets both. many adult dvd shoppers are new to porn and might be turned away by the explicit covers. basically it's just to appeal to a wider audience.

Vivid is one of thew few adult studios that have a very strong B&M retail presence in stores like Tower Records and Virgin. That's the main influence for the softer covers.
I also have seen some of the adult DVD studios using the VHS covers on their sites to represent the DVD. The VHS covers are almost always more explicit than their DVD counterparts. In many cases it's the cover that sells the title. You can tell what type of audience a store is marketing to based upon the covers they use on their sites.

"You can tell what type of audience a store is marketing to based upon the covers they use on their sites."
You got an example of that? I figure it's just like the way you can tell what kind of people watches a TV show by watching the commercials.

There is at least one store that has a special image that appears for any covers with explicit sex acts. (I forget which one at the moment.)
I think that the TV commercial analogy is fairly accurate. A store is marketing to a certain demographic. In this case the demographic is a little more focused. (You already have the customer on your site so you can assume that they are looking for adult DVDs.) "Hard" covers may be a little too much for newbies but "soft" covers certainly aren't a turn-off for seasoned porn shoppers.
There are a lot of people curious about porn as a result of DVD. Some of the stores are trying to appeal to those newbies by positioning their products in a method that's erotic instead of just graphic. The popularity of many titles boils down to a case of judging a book by its cover. Those people familiar with adult movies know better and shop for titles from their favorite directors, studios or feature their favorite performer.
Of course this is all just my assumption and isn't really based upon any facts or years of experience in marketing.

Just want to give Diabolic huge praises on their 2 covers on 1 page! Awesome!
Hey, don't want your folks, kids, etc, to see those nasty photos? No problem! With Diabolic titles all you have to do is remove the cover, turn it the opposite, and hey, you got yourself a softcore version cover! Diabolic screams quality.
.......................
Now, are you telling me Vivid does the same, but don't offer both versions, hardcore and softcore on the same side to the public? If so..they are really a bunch of jerkoffs, because they spend all that time making so many damn previews..over 50 short previews on side B! What kind of shit is that!!! On top of that..their image is nasty looking on screen. Oh wait..this discussion was about alternate box covers right? Oops sorry for getting off topic.
