We put in a home theater setup in the finished half, and had a "media storage" room built in part of the unfinished half. When we did that, we had the builders put in a narrow, but relatively deep, closet with lots of shelving underneath the basement stairs. This is accessed by a locked door, the location of whose key is known only by my wife and me. That's where all the porn is kept, now including a growing number of DVDs. FYI, I'm pretty lucky -- my wife, while not choosing to watch it, doesn't object to my keeping and viewing it in the house. Seems her father had a lot of it himself, and made no secret of it! In that same closet under the stairs rest a fair number of his old VHSs, plus a bunch of old 8mm "loops" from the pre-home-video days! [Link] |

I find it's easiest to hide the adult DVDS that are out by just having a stack of them, spine facing away, with a mainstream DVD on top of the pile. I think The Blues Brothers is on top of several Private discs at the moment, and noone could be the wiser... not a permanent storage solution but a good way to not have to hide them when they're staying out for awhile. cheers, scipio [Link] |

If there are some of the old "classics" among them, be aware that many of the new DVD versions have been edited and/or are missing scenes entirely! Do a search on "edited" or something like that and you'll find a lot of traffic here about the subject. Another point to be made (I know, this is "Adult DVD Talk" -- forgive me) is that many of the DVD releases of older material look like crap (see "Caballero"). In comparison, the old VHS copies don't look so bad! Finally, in reference to the VHS copies you intend to "purge," if you're just gonna toss 'em, let us know! I use this site for the most part, which is pretty much R4-oriented.. http://www.michaeldvd.com.au For the Adult stuff, almost without exception the DVDs are equal or better to what I had on DVD. For some titles like Night Trips, I've replaced an old fuzzy tape with a new grainy DVD.. pretty much like for like. The problem being that due to the nature of the Adult VHS market here in Australia, about 50% of whats available are bootlegs while the other 50% are "licenced" - both types basically get an original US NTSC VHS copy of the vid in question, convert it to PAL, then run it through a battery of VCRs for duplication.. all pretty stinky. For the purged VHS stuff, I generally give the mainstream stuff away to relatives while I sell off the Adult stuff.. I'd let you guys know, but it's all PAL-format anyway, so probably not the most use.. cheers, scipio [Link] |

I've heard of some people automatically trashing a lot of decent stuff just to re-buy it on DVD, then being disappointed, much less out mucho bucks! I have to constantly watch my step, dollar-wise, on re-collecting the same titles in various formats -- gotta eat (food - I mean, pussy's yummy but not very nourishing), ya know. There are a number of titles which I now have in three different formats -- VHS, laserdisc and DVD (some even in 3/4-inch U), so I must draw the line somewhere! Meanwhile, I wasn't aware of what kinds of quality issues you've been having there. In some ways, although we in the States piss and moan about stuff, we often don't know how well off we are! I've decided to store them in MediaZone protective sleeves and keep the covers in a binder with Mead Media Zone protective sleeves. The Mediazone sleeves are similar to those sold by Caselogic, but a better value (2 per sleeve) and more durable. I alphabetized the binder and numbered each dvd and the sleeve protector. Assigning each disc a unique number will also help in the development of a database. I bought these sleeves at CompUSA a while back when they were buy one get one free. They are normally $6.99 for a box of 25 (holds 50). They are also great for blank CDRs. Snowman [Link] |
