Hey all, Question... What (generally) determines when videos get released on DVD? I am a big fan of New Wave Hookers 4, and when I looked around, I saw that only 1, 2, and 5 are on DVD. I've noticed several other titles that are available on VHS but not DVD. What gives? Are studios only releasing superduper best sellers/renters on DVD now? Are they likely to go back and eventually get their other releases out on DVD? Thanks for any and all info.
tonysee: The best answer is "it depends on the studio." Some have been very active in releasing their old catalog titles on DVD. Some are just starting to release on DVD period. Others have no interest in DVD at this time. The release strategies vary from studio to studio. Some are releasing DVDs in haphazzard order (look at Real Sex Magazine: Vol 18, 22, and 27 are what's out so far). Others are re-releasing in chronological order. Obviously, there's a lot of catch up for them to do. For example, most of the long running VHS series have less than 1/3 to 1/2 of their volumes on DVD. It takes more work to re-master to DVD, not to mention the actual duplication delays. Finally, I believe VCA is the only studio that has started releasing both DVD and VHS versions at the same time on their new films. It's kind of like how the mainstream DVD industry was in 1997, so it will be a few years before we can expect the adult studios to catch up and also do day and date releases. Thanks for the info... So are there any online resources that have inside info on when things are being released to DVD? Maybe some studio home pages or something? I figure there's someone out there who has the inside info...
That's another sticky issue. Several studios (including the big ones) will tell you what's in the pipeline and even when they expect those discs to be out, but they rarely release them on-time. If you look at a store that offers a good selection of pre-orders, you'll notice that most of them have "TBD" as their release dates. And even if they do announce a firm date, it usually slips by a week or two (or, in some cases, a month or two). Aside from the fact that very few adult studios are "good" at DVD pre-production enough to do it in-house and even fewer that think about DVD when they are in principal production, the major delays come from duplication. From what I understand, many studios rely on foreign companies to do their duplication and packaging, which introduces a variable and unknown delay in when the DVDs will return to the US for distribution. Apparently, there isn't enough domestic capacity for the adult studios since mainstream DVD production has exploded. Other people here have had success contacting studios directly (many have contact e-mail addresses) and asking them whether a certain title or series is going to be available on DVD, and if so, when. Another tactic is to ask the sales staff at your favorite store, since they will know ahead of the curve about new releases since they have to prebook. BTW - I tried to do a release calendar, but it was really difficult to get the info - and then to keep it accurate. Saki - thanks for the great answers. VCA is doing a appreciable job releasing their DVDs just after their VHS. When I asked Kylie if Bride on the Run was their first day and date release, this was her response: "Bride on the Run was supposed to be released that way, as were some other upcoming titles, but alas, we missed our mark by one week. In the future we are trying to get them out at the same time but for now we're feeling lucky to get close! After all the DVD's include so much more than the VHS it just takes longer. In the Flesh , with it's 5 language tracks comes out soon! I have a very sexy voice in German and French - oh, la la! And wait til you see what we did for the Raw DVD..." - Thanks Kylie

I just noticed that VCA released a VCA Classic title..Nikki Dial Hard To Stop. Oh damn. ..I wonder if it's good. I am gonna keep my eyes open for this one and lurk for more info.

Anyone know who owns the rights to a picture from about 1980 or so entitled, Felicia? It was as I recall a European production that had a incest theme of a young niece staying with a married couple and getting involved with both of them. I've always thought that it would make a great couples video. Maybe Odyssey could pick it up?
I wrote the people of Real Sex Mag and asked what titles they were going to release on DVD. They said all of them, but it takes time and money to get them prepared for DVD and then, they have to wait in line with the same crush of other mainstream film companies who are pressing hundreds of thousands of units and take precedence over adult films 1000 or so copies A company could really make a killing doing an adult only DVD pressing plant Torris (edited to fix quote - Saki) [This message has been edited by Saki (edited April 02, 2000).]
Torris: You bring up a very good and true point: the growing popularity of mainstream DVD is one of the reasons why adult studios are having to wait or shift duplication and packaging to overseas. Although one might think that a duplicator focusing on adult DVDs would make a lot of money, it probably could make quite a bit more money duplicating mainstream discs--the demand is that strong. Adult studios normally press an order of magnitude fewer discs and almost always want to do it for next to nothing. That usually means some factory in Taiwan to manufacture the discs... Speaking about money, there are a few studios that count on the revenues from the previous DVDs to fund the upcoming ones. I think that's why there's the "pick and choose" method of determining the release order. You don't want to spend time and money releasing titles that didn't sell well on VHS, at least not early in the game.
