I am debating on which camera is the best, of course 3 chips are the shit and ever since the advent of digital video technology it has made it alot easier for one to shoot a movie without having to process film

I think these are some of the top digital cams

1. Panasonic AG DVX100 (can't front the 24 frame feature is the shit, and I hear that George Lucas actually used a modified version of this cam to film Star Wars)

2. Sony PD150 (Jules uses this)

3. Sony VX2000 (Van Styles uses this)

4. Canon XL1 (major beef is that you can't play canon tapes on sony cameras and it doesn't come with a screen to view)

5. Canon GL2

what the fuck do you think?

For money spent, the VX2000 (consumer version of the pro-sumer PD150 ~ essentially the same camera) is the way to go. Quality and features are exceptional. Spending extra for the PD150 version gives you some additional flexibility with mic inputs and control over the video process but, unless any of those specific features are essential, you can save about $1000 for the same camera.

I've used both Canon models (& several of their predecessors) and both Sony models (& several of their predecessors) - I really like the Sonys. The PD150 version has more controls and settings for you to learn (they aren't difficult); however, it offers greater flexibility with the same basic camera design, body & electronics as the VX2000 version. You need to decide if you need the greater flexibility and control.

The DVX100 seems the hot camera on the video lists these days. I am pretty damn sure nothing remotely like this was used on Star Wars. One thing to consider is how easy is it to hold steady and walk with. The light 1-chippers, I love my old Elura 2, are too small and light to get a steady shot. Also, 24 fps has more of a stutter than 30 fps. But 24 is great if you know you are going to film. Which you ain't. I really admire these guys doing porn camera work who can pull out of a super-tight asshole shot to cover the entire group of actors. And they are rock-steady the whole time.

djpickone, if you are suggesting that web page says Star Wars, episode whatever, was shot with the Panasonic you better read it again. It says they shot 24p on video, and Panasonic also uses 24p.

From what I heard the camera on Star Wars was a Panavision/Sony mix with a large cable going to a refrigerator sized box holding the hard drives storing the frames.

And the inside word was the picture quality was nowhere as good as film. And someone was fired for saying as much (plus some other stuff.)

But the Panasonic still is a good camera.
