I haven't seen Hookers but did see the Devil In Miss Jones and while it's not my cup of tea really as I don't normally watch a lot of features I was very impressed with Savanna in this role and she kept me watching until the end. The sex was ok but I'm much more of a gonzo guy so it was a under that in terms of intensity. How's that for discussion.
I've read the reviews and even after watching it twice I just don't see what the other people are seeing.
After watching both, Hookers is more disappointing because..
A. The sex scenes are worse. (At least in Devil there was one good one.)
B. I expected more. (Vivid is Vivid after all.)
C. The original was better. (Up for debate I know, but IMHO anyway)
D. The hype for Devil wasn't quite as big.
Now before I get buried in a pile of crap...something positive.
I think that for the next Hookers project VCA should gather 10 of the top directors in porn and have them ALL do their version. Let's see what Jim Powers would do, let's see what Ivan would do, let's see how Zupko would handle it, let's see what David Stanley or Guy Capo would do. And yes, let's see how Jules, John, Joey or some of the great gonzo guys would handle it.
I know it's impossible, but I think it would be interesting. That alone would be a change from this edition of "Hookers"

I have Neu Wave Hookers on tap to review, but judge from the pics I'm going to like it to some capacity because of all the tats and piercings. I didn't see the new DMJ, and I'm not sure I want to. I really do what I can to avoid Vivid.
This will only be the second Eon McKai flick I have seen, so I'm still not settled on if I like his style or not. We'll see.
Rog, that's one of the funniest goddamned things I've ever read. It reminds me of the chuckle I got when you decimated "America the Beautiful" years ago. The only difference being that I agreed with you. I'm pretty sure Mr. Mckai might take issue with your assessment of his work however. From what I understand he's very serious about his alt-porn cred.
P.S."I have finally found something more excruciating than the song “My Lumps" should be ADT quote of the year.
Thank you Rog for saving me 5-6 hours of my life. I can handle bad dialouge, even acting, but when the sex sucks, thats where you have to draw the line. I have never seen a Mckai film and based on your review, never will.
Are people giving this movie 4 and 5 stars because its the hip thing to do?
You and Tom Zupko are the two guys who have taken SERIOUS lumps from me and maintained your sense of humor and perspective. I appreciate that very much.
Hopefully Mr. McKai follows in your footsteps, but like you I have my doubts. I'm ready for some nasty feedback.
Oh and thanks....how would I go about making that my quote :-)
Rog PS: I just read that VCA spend 100,000 bucks on it. Hats of Eon because he must have 90,000 in his fucking pocket. This thing looks like it took less time to make than a supre low budget Jim Powers feature. WOW, this 100 grand worth of porn. To quote one of my faves..."Do you ever get the feeling you've all been cheated?"
I didn't bother with Devil in Miss Jones (Jenna is dead to me)
but Neu Wave Hookers. . . .they went so old school with it, it even had the annoying blurry lighting and music too loud to hear the action. I thought NOTHING could ruin a Joanna Angel flick.
Thanks. I think that might be the longest review I've ever written and certainly it is the only time I sat through a movie three times just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
All that I was missing was time that I could have spent playing XBox 360 :-)
Yeah I have to concurr, some of your more recently reviews have been hilarious lately, although unfortunately for you its because you had to sit through a bad movie, lol
Damn, I've got both of them sitting on my desk now. I think DMJ is far ahead of NWH as to when it's going to get watched, but both seem to be falling far behind now...

New Wave Hookers might be my favorite classic series. 2-5 were outstanding! I never considered seeing the remake because the collective cast lacked the star power to propell this title.
DMJ had the star power, but at the same time star power isn't always sexual power, hence my dismay for the old school studio system.
It really sucks when classic titles get a bad rap. I did like Sex World 2000 & Braodcast Barbara Too though. Goes back a while but solid titles.
I'd be open for a good run of Hershey Highway and Caught From Behind. With all the good anal out today people most likely could do these titles justice.

I watched New DMJ with some fast-forwarding but made it to the end. I am constantly impressed at how much bigger than life Jenna seems in a movie - even a movie that I don't like very much. Savanna did a good job. I just didn't like the movie. And for shame on the cinematographer for being able to make film look SO ugly. Even the best looking scene in the movie looked like it was shot on video with a film look added.
I was going to look at Neu Wave Hookers 'just because' but I think I'm going to have to pass. Stuntgirl and Squealer each took me about 20 minutes to watch with all the fast-forwarding I did. At least the new DMJ took me an hour.

It seems to me that for every $ spent on a pornmovie over a "normal" budget only makes the sex less important, lowers the intensity of performers, enables directors to get silly ideas about photography, editing, lightning, props etc, that allways seems to make big budget movies lack in the only category that really counts in the end, sexual intensity.
Not that less money spent is a recipe for sucess, but when I search my memory I cant think of a single "big budget" skin flick that had a significant amount of sexual intensity.
I wonder where the magic number for overworked productions is? 40-50k$?
Maybe the problem is that the only movies studios are willing to spend the big money on are "remake sequels" or already established product lines, tying the hands of the prospective directors.
I figure the only way to make bigbudget porn interesting might be to give a proven good director with a good original idea alot of money and and let him/her just run with it. Maybe then there would atleast be some hope of the endproduct being interesting.
We are not feature fans, but are planning on watching the big AVN Award winners to see what we're missing.
We watched "The New Devil in Miss Jones" a couple days ago. Jane didn't like it and wondered when the movie would get over .... she did like Nick Manning and would like to see more male eye candy in gonzos. Jane also noticed more than half of the scenes involve or are dedicated to lesbian action which she isn't into. Dick thought it was pretty good for a feature but definitely not whackable. It does make me wonder how these awards get doled out ... it seems like 9 awards for "The Devil" is too much. I wonder what we're going to think of "Pirates" which got 11 awards?? As a gonzo fan I have to say, I am more in agreement with the dominance of Evil Angel in the AVN Awards than with the awards to Vivid, Digital Playground and Wicked. I still think porn is about sex not art.
Problem is that ALOT of features isnt about art OR porn, its always about some redicoulus plot, weird props, pointless costumes etc.
In their efforts to make features they think they have to make the sex scenes "soft" which makes them uninteresting aswell as thinking that they need what they call a "story". It seems to me that all the extra money that gets spent on features goes to things that are irrelevant to the purpose of all sex films, gonzo or feature, which is the actual sex.
I have nothing against soft porn, or porn more focused on erotica than hardcore sex. What seems to plague all such productions though is that they lack intensity, heat and true erotisicm, be they just regular porn or "art porn".
The word "feature" didnt enter my mind once when I watched it, and that must be taken as a good sign But its actually a good example on the format and focus a good feature needs to have, good hot sex. Wheter theres rough, anal, dp´s in it or not is irrelevant. If the actual sexscenes arent hot it doesnt matter how much money or effort you put into the movie. And thats where Vivid, Wicked et. al almost always fail. They think big production value can make up for the lack of good sex scenes. THey might still move alot of product, but its not good porn, or good erotic film either and its certainly not art.
